The ambulance carrying Matt got to hospital quickly. Matt had taken Ronnie's advice and gone back to sleep on the journey. There were nearly a hundred nurses and doctors waiting for them as they arrived. The stretcher was taken into the hospital as Ronnie tried to keep up. When they got to the operating theatre a nurse stopped him.
"I'm afraid you can't go any further sir." She said with her hands on Ronnies shoulders.
"What's his chances?" Ronnie asked, trying to calm himself down.
"We don't know yet. We'll do everything we can." The nurse reassured him as she went into the room.
Ronnie stepped back from the door as he heard worried voices come from inside the door. He went to the family room.

The family room was navy blue with four sofas and two armchairs for people to wait on. There was a vending machine and a water cooler to one side and on the other a kids pen.
There was a coffee table with magazines on it for people to read whilst they were waiting. Ronnie went over to one of the sofas and fell onto it. He hated these rooms, it had only been a few hours since he was in it waiting for his grandson.
He got his phone out and searched through his photos. He got up photos of him, Matty and Alesha. He smiled as he remembered the times walking along the river.
"Oh Matty." Ronnie sighed.

Alesha and Kaden managed to fight through the traffic and quickly went up to the family room. They found Ronnie inside and Alesha put a little smile on her face when she saw him.
"Ronnie." She said quietly sitting next to him.
"Hey sweetheart." Ronnie responded.
"How's Matt?" Alesha asked afraid of what the answer was going to be.
"He's still in surgery. They're taking their time in there."
"How long are they going to be?"
"They didn't say."
Kaden went to the water cooler and got a drink. Ronnie didn't bother him as he kept talking to Alesha.
"I should have done something." Alesha said with a little sob.
"What could you have done?" Ronnie said putting his arm around her.
Alesha moved into Ronnie's chest. It was nice and strong to have a cry into.
"He's going to be alright isn't he?" Alesha asked a bit more calmer.
"Yeah. Two little bullets won't stop our Matty." Ronnie said, rubbing her shoulder with his hand.
Alesha nodded as she fell asleep. She knew it would be a while until Matt was out of surgery so knew to sleep so she was ready to go to his side.
Ronnie picked up one of the magazines in the hand he had left. True they were all the same just celebrity gossip. He just put it back down again. There wasn't anything interesting in them anyway.
"How you holding up kid?" Ronnie asked Kaden quietly.
Kaden sat down on the armchairs across from Ronnie and Alesha. Kaden felt awkward being around these two as they seemed so close but he wanted to stay to make sure DS Devlin was alright.
"I don't know really. It's all a bit much I guess." Kaden answered slowly.
"Yeah I know." Ronnie said back.
"I saw the news earlier. I didn't know what to make of it really."
"It's fine. I don't think any of us know what to do…"
Before Ronnie could finish his sentence, Natsha walked in. Ronnie nodded as she came in. Another police officer, uniformed this time, came in and took Kaden away. Natsha sat down where Kaden had been.
"Anything?" Ronnie asked hopefully.
"Not yet. Henry and Jacob are talking to the press right now back at the scene but they said they would be here soon." Natsha said in her usual deadpan voice.
"I'm sure Matty would love to see them." Ronnie tried to keep the mood light.
"I just wish we could see him." Natsha looked down at the floor.
"We will soon."
And just as Ronnie said this a doctor and a nurse came walking through the door. Alesha woke and sat bolt upright. They both sat on the sofa across from the three. Alesha crossed her toes and fingers to help Matt.

Henry had just finished the talk with the press. Jacob was impressed, he hadn't seen a lawyer be that confident with the press especially after something like this.
"That was really good." Jacob said when Henry re-joined him.
"Seen and done a few. It helped." Henry replied with his signature smile.
"It was still hard by the looks of it though."
"It always is especially when you're close to the victim. Any word from the hospital?"
"No. Natasha's there at the moment."
"I suppose we'd better get going."
Henry went to walk to his car. Jacob on the other hand, stayed where he was. Henry was confused by this, why would anyone want to stay here!
"You coming?" Henry shouted to Jacob.
"Give me a minute." Jacob shouted back.
Henry sighed as he watched Jacob go up and down the crime scene as much as he could. It looked like he was looking for something but the police must have gotten everything by now.
Jacob bent down to the ground. Henry rolled his eyes and walked over to Jacob.
"What have you found?" Henry asked, getting impatient.
"Nothing. Just a bit of blood." Jacob said, also getting impatient.
"Matts?"
"Yeah." Jacob sighed, putting his head into his hands.
"Come on let's get out of here." Henry said, helping Jacob up from the floor.
Jacob gave in and walked with Henry to the car. He hadn't known Matt very long but there was a connection between them. He just hoped they would get there in time if Matt didn't have time left.
