As April came to an end, Kurt slowly started to feel an increase in fatigue. He had tirelessly been finalizing designs for the past 3 weeks. So when the deadline came and went, he assumed the tiredness would go away. Even after getting well rested sleep, he still found himself wanting to take a nap in the afternoon.
Blaine on the other hand had yet to notice any difference in his husband. That was until he woke up on the morning of Saturday, May the 2nd to find the spot next to him empty. As he reached his hand over to feel for Kurt, he found just an empty but warm sheet. From his quick thinking, he assumed Kurt had only woken to use the bathroom quickly before snuggling back into his husband's arms. After waiting another five minutes, there was still no sign of Kurt. Blaine rose up from his spot in bed and looked towards the bathroom with worry.
As his ears started to listen to the noises around him, it only took a few seconds for him to realize his husband was groaning behind the bathroom door. Before Blaine could swing his feet to the floor, the groaning of his husband was followed by the sound of him getting sick. That was all it took for Blaine to spring into action as he rushed towards their en-suite bathroom and push the door open. He immediately was by his husband's side, running a soothing hand across his back.
"Kurt, sweetie, I'm here. It's okay to let it all out," Blaine said calmly as he comforted his husband.
When Kurt felt like he had emptied his whole stomach into the bowl before him, he leaned back and rested against his husband's chest. He had always found comfort when held in Blaine's arms. As he concentrated on the feeling of Blaine's arms around him, he said, "Thank you for being here with me. You're the best".
"Of course I would be here, right by your side. There is nowhere else I would rather be. Yeah it might not be so much fun to puke your guts out, but just know that I'll be here to help you through it," Blaine said with a tender care. "And plus, I know you would do the same thing if our roles were reversed. Remember the stomach bug I got last Valentine's Day. We were supposed to be out enjoying a nice romantic meal, but instead I was sitting where you were. It wasn't fun and we had to cancel our plans, but it felt comforting just knowing that you would do anything to make sure that I was okay".
Kurt turned in his arms and said, "Of course I wasn't about to go out on a Valentine's Day Dinner without my true love. And plus, I haven't spent a Valentine's Day without you since we met".
"How about we get up off this floor and get you back into bed. You need some more rest," Blaine said. "And don't give me that look, I'm calling Isabelle and letting her know you are sick and need the day to rest," he continued knowing his husband too well. If Blaine hadn't been here, he knew full well that Kurt would have been drowning himself in his work.
Sighing, Kurt said, "Okay, if I must. Now help me up dear husband. Will you be going back to bed with me? It always feels so empty without you by my side".
Standing up and taking his husband's hands, Blaine gently guided him up. "Of course I'll be there. But let me give Isabelle a call once I get you back into bed. I'll just plan on recording later in the afternoon," he said.
Before Blaine could guide Kurt back to the bed, Kurt insisted on brushing his teeth and getting the vile taste out of his mouth. He leaned against the bathroom vanity as Blaine prepared his toothbrush and grabbed a warm washcloth to wipe his face.
A few minutes later, Blaine guided him back to their bedroom before helping him back into bed.
Kurt settled against their headboard as Blaine left to give Isabelle a call. His mind started to wonder why he had been sick this morning. Neither of them had left the apartment since the virus had spread. It had been over a month since they had left the comfort of their home. And they both ate the same meal for dinner the night before, so it was not food poisoning.
Before he could ponder more on the subject, Blaine slipped back into the bed with him. It didn't take long for Kurt to curl up into Blaine's arms and fall back to sleep.
Three hours later, Kurt won up to an empty spot beside him. Feeling better, he got up to go find his husband. Wandering into their open kitchen and living space, he spotted Blaine busy at the stove. Before he could step further into their kitchen, he took one sniff of the air and could not stand the smell of eggs.
Hearing footsteps, Blaine was about to greet his husband but turned around to see Kurt running back to the bathroom. He quickly set their breakfast aside before going back to his husband's side.
Kurt managed to reach the toilet just in time to throw up what little he had left in his stomach. He sat back against the wall but could still smell a faint whiff of eggs in the air. He couldn't understand why this would make him so nauseous.
Kurt looked up just as Blaine rounded into the bathroom, stopping as he saw Kurt resting against the wall. "Honey, are you okay? Do you need me to get you anything?" Blaine questioned with worry evident on his face.
"Please just get the smell and sight of eggs out of this apartment. It's making my stomach do flips and not in a good way," Kurt begged his husband.
With a quick nod, Blaine ran from the bathroom, not even questioning the request. He would do anything for Kurt. After getting rid of the eggs, Blaine decided they would just have toast for breakfast, hoping that it would be something Kurt could keep down. He didn't want to feed him too much, afraid that his stomach wouldn't be able to handle it.
Meanwhile, Kurt fished his phone out of his pocket and pulled up a quick internet search. He knew it probably wasn't smart to google his symptoms, but he also needed to understand why he couldn't stand the smell in the air.
After typing in a quick question, the first few results didn't make sense and then he scrolled down and his eyes almost popped out. The title of the article read "Top 5 things that make you heave when pregnant" and front the quick summary, eggs was listed as the top item.
He started freaking out, there was no way he could be pregnant. He's a guy for the love of Gaga! And then he remembered, they had started going without condoms since they ran out. If he were a girl, there could be a very high chance that he was pregnant. But he's not a girl.
This led him back to a new google search. This time he typed in "can guys get pregnant?" and as soon as he clicked search, several articles popped up. The first few articles weren't very helpful and then he came across the third article. The title read "Discovery of the Carrier Gene allowing gay men to conceive their own children" and as he clicked on the link, his closed his eyes for a second before allowing himself to read.
Scanning through the article, it essentially mentioned that there had been several cases of pregnant gay men. None of them had known they could carry children, but upon examination, doctors had in fact discovered each and every man documented to be pregnant. And the child was biologically theirs and their partners.
Realizing that he very much could actually be carrying a child, Kurt knew he had to find out as soon as possible. Although they had discussed having children someday, they were each only 26 and 25. They were still a few years away from adding any children to their family. With that thought, he decided he wasn't going to tell Blaine about his suspicions until he knew the answer for himself. No need to get his husbands hopes up if it wasn't true.
Closing out of the internet, Kurt quickly opened up his grocery delivery app, knowing that he would need a few pregnancy tests to confirm or deny his questions. Upon a quick search through the app, he found several different kinds of tests. Ranging in different colors and different readings for positive and negative. Not wanting to think too much into it, Kurt picked out two different tests, adding two of each to his cart. Before checking out, he decided to add a few of his basic skin care and hair care products to the cart. At least that way he had an excuse as to why he was all of a sudden ordering from the app.
Finally getting up from his spot on the floor, Kurt made his way back to their bed, just as Blaine walked in with a small plate of toast.
"Hi sweetheart, are you feeling any better? Here, I made us some toast to eat. Maybe you'll be able to keep this down. I want you to eat something, but not too much," Blaine said with concern.
Taking the plate of toast, Kurt let it rest on his legs before answering, "I'm feeling okay now. Still a little nauseous but I think I'll be okay if I just rest some more". Looking over towards his husband he continued, "While I was in there, I noticed that we're running low on shampoo and my skin cream. I'm gonna put in a quick delivery order. Is there anything else you may think we need?"
Running a mental list of things that would help his sick husband, Blaine realized they didn't have any soup in the apartment and they were all out of ginger ale. "Why don't you pick out some soup and a pack of ginger ale? I know you aren't as fond of canned soup, but you know I can't make soup from scratch. My kitchen skills are very limited and if you are sick, I would rather spend less time preparing food and more time making sure that you are well taken care of," Blaine responded as he placed a hand over top Kurt's hand.
Quickly adding the additional items to the cart, Kurt started to check out and specifically requested paper bags. He didn't want there to be any chances of Blaine looking through the bags to find what Kurt was really ordering.
"Okay, it will be here within two hours," Kurt said. Looking down at the toast on his lap, he decided he would try taking a few bites.
Glad that Kurt was starting to eat a little something, Blaine reached for the tv remote and started flipping through the channels until he could find something they could both enjoy. It didn't take long before he found one of their favorite movies playing, The Sound Of Music. And by the looks of it, the movie had just started.
Placing the remote back on his bedside table, Blaine slid over and placed an arm around his husband, pulling him in closer. Kurt immediately relaxed into his husbands arms once again and watched the movie while trying to keep his mind distracted.
Two hours later, the Von Trapp Children were trying to cover up their trip to visit Maria when a buzz rang through the apartment. Realizing that it must be the delivery, Kurt rushed out of bed to go let them into the building and proceeded to wait by the door until the bags were left in front of their door. A few minutes later, Kurt pulled two paper bags into their apartment, with a strong hold on one bag in particular.
Kurt hurried off towards the bathroom and closed the door before asking Blaine to put the food away. Locking the door quickly, Kurt pulled out the shampoo and skin cream first before finding the pregnancy tests at the bottom of the bag. Quickly reading the instructions, he prepared all four tests. Five minutes later, the timer on his phone went off.
This was it. He would have to look at the results. He wasn't sure if he was nervous because he didn't want it to be positive or if he actually had started to like the idea of having a child that was both his and Blaine's. Boy would he love to have a little girl with Blaine's hair and his own complexion. Or a little boy with Blaine's eyes and his own hair.
Kurt turned around to face all four of the sticks laid out on the vanity. All four had the same result, just in different formats. Slowly, a smile crept onto his face.
This day had started out like any other day, well, before he had emptied his stomach into the toilet bowl beside him. And now, he understood why that had happened. Their lives were about to change for the better. Leading them down a road brand spanking new, with bright signs ahead.
He slowly brought his hand to rest against his belly. Wanting to look at it more closely, he pulled up his shirt and turned sideways. It wasn't very noticeable, especially if you weren't looking for it, but he recognized a small roundness to his belly. He was pretty sure it was still really too early to start showing, but he let his mind run wild with happiness. Soon enough, he would start growing and he couldn't wait to document his progress.
Making a quick decision, he picked up his phone and opened the camera. He snapped a quick photo and could already picture placing it in a photo book with several more photos that had yet to be taken.
As he was putting all the evidence back in the bag and hiding it under the sink, Kurt realized there was still one more thing he would need to do. How the hell would he tell Blaine?
