I watched both men buzz around the room, simple chatter amongst them. I was eyeing Stark as he attempted to irritate Banner. Side comments and a jab every now and then. He was making me anxious, Starks irrational behaviour. Did he want an explosion of green? I was just about to throw the nearest tool I could find at Stark when he poked Banner with a rod in his side but someone else beat me to it.
"Hey! Are you nuts?" Steve Rodgers yelled stomping into the room like a solider on a mission-which in a way he was.
A quick glance at the Captain and Stark eyed Banner again. "The jury's out. You really have got a lid on it. Haven't you? What's your secret?" He questioned. " Mello jazz? Bongo drums? Huge bag of weed?"
"Is everything a joke to you?" The Captain argued, which I was inclined to agree.
"Funny things are" he responded.
"I don't think risking our lives for the sake of your curiosity is very funny Stark, no offence Doctor." I snorted, making my irritation with the billionaire known.
" Its alright, I wouldn't have come on bored if I couldn't handle. . . Pointy things" he maintained, shrugging his shoulders.
I watched as Stark circled around the desk in front of him until he was standing facing all residents in the room, twirling the pointed rod with his fingers. "Your tip toeing big man" he pointed.
"You need to focus on the problem at hand." The Captain insinuated.
"Oh I am." He remarked. "Why did fury call us in? Why now? Why leave this kid here with us? What is he hiding?" He Questioned. "I've read the files, not one of them mention a ten year old kid from fricking outer space? Who is she and why so sudden. Hmm? You heard Loki in there, 'The Imperial weapon wondering around the halls' It's her, obviously, but what can this child do that makes her so dangerous" He demanded, coming closer to me.
"You think fury's hiding something?" The Captain remarked from behind stark who was looking at me.
"He's a spy. He's 'The Spy'. Captain, his secrets have secrets. I think she's hiding something." Stark accused watching me.
I was fuming, my anger rolling off me in waves letting everyone in the room aware of my foul mood. Never before in my short life had I been subjected to such disgrace, I wasn't going to stand for it much longer.
"Well, Stark, if you are so inquisitive about myself, I would implore that you do what is logic, not talk about me as if I'm not here or accuse me of wrongdoing while I am simply innocent. Ask me what you will, not fretting over the subject like an insufferable kelpie! And for the record, I am 13." I barked.
Stark smirked, "See this Captain, this generation has no respect for their elders." He grinned. In mockery he bowed slightly at my form. "Tell me, oh mighty and wise 13 year old, where is it that thou derived from?"
I hissed at his can-do-attitude, my pointed fangs on display. He was making me out to be a fool and I didn't like it. "Your insufferable" I growled.
"I've heard that one before" he mumbled amused. Twirling, he pointed the rod at Banner "It's bugging him too, isn't it?"
Waving his hands at his work Banner fretted, "Ahhh, I just wanna finish my work here and-"
"Doctor?" The Captain probed.
With a sigh, the doctor removed his glasses. "Loki's jab at Fury about the cube."
I leaned closer, my anger at Stark quickly fading as I became intrigued in Banner's words.
"Yeah, I heard it." The Captain responded.
Banner pointed at Stark, "Well, I think that was meant for you. Even if Barton didn't tell Loki about the tower, it's still all over the news."
"Stark building? That big ugly-building in New York?" The Captain questioned.
"It's run on an arc-reactor" Banner looked to Stark "it can run itself for what? A year?"
Munching on another blueberry stark replied, "Yup it's just the prototype. We're kinda the only naming clean energy brand out there"
"Wait" I interrupted. "If your working with similar technology to the Tesseract why weren't you brought in earlier? Maybe I'm not seeing the big picture but wouldn't you have been the man to call regarding. . .all this?" I motioned to the blue glowing sphere thing that I still didn't know how it linked to everything. It's insistent whispering, demanding my attention hadn't stopped since I arrived. I should have been unnerved about such a thing but instead I just felt content listening to its secrets.
"You've got a point there skipper, I should look into that once my decryption program finishes breaking into all S.H.E.I.L.D's secure files." Stark said.
Oh by the Cosmic Gods, he was snooping. Well I couldn't really say much now. At first glance the Captain didn't look too pleased with Starks antics but if I looked closely I noticed the seed of doubt planted in his thoughts, he was curious about S.H.E.I.L.D's motive as well. I guess working with the Tesseract was hitting close to home considering his history with it.
I listen to the adults bickering for a few more minutes before I ambled across the room in search of a paper and a pen. Successfully collecting my tools I sat back down and began doodling. I was so struck in my work that I hadn't even realised that the Captain had left until the door sealed shut.
I continued my drawing of a wolf I saw in a documentary. It was a beautiful pure white wolf, bowing low in a vicious snarl. Her fangs on display with drool dripping from her mouth. I had watched a documentary on a pack of wild wolves roaming an abandoned city with high levels of radiation, where the humans had to abandon after Chernobyl nuclear plant's cooling system failed. It was interesting to see how nature claimed back the land and how the apex species became a pack of radioactive wolves. I drew the alpha of the pack, she had a majestic look that had captured my attention immediately when I started watching the program. Considering that I was drawing with a pen my drawing wasn't half bad.
I looked up from my work when Fury abruptly charged into the room heading straight for Stark.
"What the hell are you doing Tony?" He demanded.
"I was the thinking the same thing about you" Stark countered.
"Your supposed to be looking for the Tesseract"
Banner added, "When there's a hit we'll be the first to know"
There was a beep from the computer Stark was at which captured his attention for a second before he turned to Fury and blurted. "What is phase two?"
Almost simultaneously Steve Rodgers arrived and dumped a weapon on the table. The sound making me jump out of my seat a little.
"Phase two is S.H.E.I.L.D using the cube to make weapons."
Fury attempted to diminish the Captain's accusations but proved futile as Stark's computer buzzed again showing the blueprints of a weapon. My heart sank. Earth was meant to be a peaceful place, not the centre of war and destruction.
I stood up and leant over the table just as Thor Odinson and Nat walked into the room. My gaze was caught on the God and I couldn't help but feel shivers when looking at the asgardian in person for the first time. Just like Loki he gave off an impressive aura, one of strength tainted with the essence of lightening which left a phantom zingy taste on my tongue. Even a human would feel the storm brewing under the asgardian's brest plate. Although somehow I knew that Thor had only scratched the surface oh his potential, there was a barrier of his own doing keeping him captive. I almost sensed a battle of inner turmoil. Of what I wasn't sure.
I noticed I was forgotten about again as arguments started to become heated. Fury was blaming Thor, disputing that the only reason S.H.E.I.L.D was constructing such weapons was due to his arrival on earth and the fight he had with Loki last year. Thor defending himself by insinuating that Earth had told the universe that it was ready for a higher form of war. This had more or less invited the others to input their strong opinions on the matter. The room quickly grew with the affinity of bitterness, seeping out of each person in the form of hurtful words.
I quietly walked up behind the Sceptre, it's alluring whispers becoming more potent. It screamed to be lifted, for me to explore its influence. It was so close that I imagined the cold golden metal ghosting along my fingertips. I didn't touch it though. Somehow I restrained myself from snatching the sceptre, my common sense empowering over this foreign force. I took a step back and moved to the right slightly where I was just behind Stark. I needed to stay away from it.
I was concerned about the welfare of the people on the ship. By the look of it Banner's temper was growing thin. I couldn't see any green yet but there was still a likely chance of meeting the 'big guy' if this futile argument didn't come to a stop now. I knew that it would be impossible for these strong personalities to work together. Insults were becoming more personal with Stark and the Captain face to face backbiting each other. Banner was losing it too and had reached behind him and lifted the sceptre-which I had a feeling was the culprit to this drama.
Everyone stopped when Banner lifted it up, the agents in the room had their hands at the ready to take out their guns.
"Doctor Banner, you should put that down before anyone gets hurt." I suggested, finally saying something which reminded everyone else I was still in the room.
He looked at me and used the sceptre to point it in my direction. Instantly I held my hands up to show I wasn't a threat. Fear lingered in my gut as the weapon was pointed at me.
"And what about her, huh? Why is she here, what part does a 13 year old play in all of this?" He demanded looking at Fury.
"Banner set the spear down" the Captain interrupted.
"Why can't the guy let off some steam?" Stark added. Oh if I was in slapping distance of that man, did he not see who this destructive weapon was aimed at?
"Tony, you know darn hell why!" The Captain jeered.
"Do you wanna know my secrete? How I keep the big guy away." Banner grumbled his voice taking on a dangerous tone.
No I didn't. I was quite happy to stay in the dark.
All of a sudden a beep came from the computer opposite me, I breathed a sigh of relief when Banner set the sceptre down mumbling that 'I guess you don't get to see my party trick.' The agents closed the caps on their weapons the threat now somewhat calmer. I stumbled backwards catching my breath, one I didn't remember holding. I leant on the glass behind me and looked up when Banner spoke.
"Oh my god" he whispered.
I was confused for a mere second before there was an explosion. I was viciously thrown back, smashing through the window behind me until I fell down a full level. I felt all the air forcibly leave my lungs as I hit the ground, I was left winded and unable to draw in a full breath for a few seconds. Raspy breaths all I could manage.
I landed on broken glass and I could feel blood trickling down my face. I was on my back and felt a small shard of glass pierced into my ribs. Coughing I attempted to lift myself up without touching the shattered glass littered around me. Managing to sit up I reached behind me and gritting my teeth I pulled out the shard of glass. I let out a hiss as I did and threw the inch long glass to the side.
I looked up when I heard heavy footsteps coming towards me. Thor offered his hand to help me up. Grateful I accepted his outstretched arm and was hoisted into a standing position. Grunting, I knew bruises would cover my body in the morning.
"Are you okay?" He asked once I was securely on my feet.
"Yeah" I croaked. "Just a bit winded. Where's everyone else?"
"I'm not sure, but I have to find Loki. This is his doing." He declared looking around the room.
"Well I'm coming with you. I don't have a weapon of any sorts so you can be my weapon" I smiled looking up to the God.
He started to walk towards the nearest door "Just don't get in my way"
Quickly I stumbled after him. "Hey" I called. "where's Mjolnir? Don't you need a weapon"
"For a human child you are very informed." He blatantly stated as we ran into a group of agents running the opposite direction.
"Well then, it's a good thing that I'm not human." I laughed.
I bumped into Thor's back as he suddenly stopped.
"What are you then. I knew I sensed something different about you." He turned around facing me fully.
He stood stark, his long blond hair coming down in rivets to his shoulders. His arms bare showing off his muscled arms. His azar blue eyes stared down at me questionably.
"I'm actually from Mercury"
Thor hummed in response. "Mercury is a wasteland and has been since before the time of Asgard. It is not possible."
"I do not lie Asgardian." I growled.
"You are perhaps if anything a descendant of the great people of Mercury, a traitor's descendant who fled the planet in its dying days. Your bloodline diluted of Mercurian blood. You cannot be a true Mercurian" he demanded. "It is not possible"
I growled at the God. "Do NOT assume you know who I am Thor Odinson. I am the daughter of Mercury and if it was up to me I would have died with my people. I live in memory to them. My bloodline is pure and powerful and will not be insulted by a God who still squabbles with his sibling."
"There is no evidence of the accusation you claim. It is true though, the Mercuians were a powerful race on-power with the people of Asgard themselves. My father told me stories of them as a child, but that's all they were. Stories. Tales of a race long destroyed, its people far ahead of their time."
"I don't need to prove anything to you" I hissed flashing my teeth. I barged past the Asgardian. "You never answered my question. Where's Mjolnir? Your going to need it if the ship has been compromised."
"Don't fret about it child. I'll summon Mjolnir when the time is right."
"Alright. Do you know where loki is then?" I asked rounding the corner of another hallway.
"Yes I believe-
All of the sudden men wearing masks stood in front of us. I counted six and they were clearly not S.H.E.I.L.D agents. The two at the front fired at us and I had to duck and roll to the side. Thor charged at the men using nothing but his fists to bring down the first two men. I followed after him putting my training to use.
I came face to face with one and avoiding being shot I side kicked his weapon from him. After that is was a simple take down. I knocked him unconscious with his own weapon and moved to the next guy. I crouched down and launched at the man easily tripping him, I was about to put him in a hold until Thor whacked him in the head with his bare hand. I looked around at the collection of bodies on the floor, all six agents down and I had only helped with one.
Ouch, remind me never to get on this God's bad side. I stood, slightly out of breath and nodded to Thor."
"You fight well for a childling." He motioned
"Than-
I was interrupted by an inhuman roar, rattling through the ship. It was so loud that I had to cover my ears. Adrenaline had made my hearing somewhat sharper, not painfully so but enough to hear the heavy stomps of something large. Or someone large. My only guess was that Banner had been compromised. An ice cold chill ran down my spine in realisation. The hulk has come out to play.
I turned and locked eyes with Thor. He nodded.
"My brother will have to wait" he grunted.
And with that he ran to the direction of the roar leaving me standing in the graveyard of bodies. I quickly decided that I was gong to stay as far away from the hulk as possible. I ran the opposite direction praying to the Cosmic Gods that I wouldn't run into anymore soldiers. I didn't have a weapon to rely on only my quick reflexes.
It was chaos. Agents were running every direction not caring who they were bumping into. I didn't know where I was going but I soon meet someone I recognised.
"Phil! Agent Phil!" I yelled over the commotion running to catch up with him.
He turned around at my yelling and looked slightly shocked. "What are you doing here? Your supposed to be hiding somewhere safe."
"There was an explosion, I was with Thor but he went to help with the hulk. We also ran into a group of bad guys, but Thor mostly sorted that out. Is anywhere safe right now?" I questioned.
He nodded. "Right. Okay. I guess you can stick with me, come on this way." He pointed in front of us and we carried on running.
"What's going on Phil?" I asked.
"An agent of ours, Barton-
"You mean Hawkeye?"
"Yes, Loki took control of him and by the looks of it he's come back to help Loki escape. He has a squadron with him and there trying to shut down the engines of the ship."
"Okay sounds really bad. We're are we going?"
I didn't need an answer because we had stopped in front of what I could assume was an armoury. There was weapons of all sorts stacked in this small room. Some very small that you could fit in your palm and others bigger than my whole body. I watched quietly while Phil picked up a rather brutish gun. It was big and bulky and looked menacing. Phil grinned as his tested the weight of the gun in his hands.
"I have no idea how strong this is" he laughed.
"Cool! Can I try" I reached towards the weapon but Phil snapped it away from it.
"No." He glared, pulling the weapon to his chest.
"Let me try I've got nothing" I pleaded proceeding to stretch for it. "is it one of the magical weapon do-das?"
"No it's mine! I want to use it first" He demanded.
I pulled my hands away, and let a small laugh escape. "Oh, and I though I was the only child here. You just want to test out your new toy."
Phil straighten himself up in response, as if to make himself look taller. Fixing his tie he said "I'm not a child, this prototype has yet to be tested and I am simply the only one authorised to use it. That's all"
"Sure Agent." I teased. "Well can you give me something to defend myself? What about that!" I pointed to a deadly looking weapon which was large with a long barrel. It was easily longer than my arm but it looked like it could pack in a mean punch.
"Definitely not!" He rebuked "That is a Missal Launcher with the firepower to take down an aircraft. I'd rather trust Loki with that than you kid."
"Words hurt agent" I gasped, placing a hand on my heart. "You don't trust me, after all we've been through." I faked hurt.
Phil glared at me.
"Right, still too soon. But you gotta give me something to defend myself! What if we run into bad guys, or worse-Loki!" I insisted.
Phil heaved a sigh and turned around to reach behind him. After a couple seconds of hesitation he picked something up and handed it to me. It was small, black and could fit in one hand. It was the shape of a small gun but I couldn't see where the bullets came out of. Instead of a barrel there was a twisted piece of metal at the end of the gun.
"Nice! Is this some kind of high tech laser gun or like a plasma shooter?" I asked excited that I was being trusted with a weapon.
"It's a teaser, non-lethal but it only has one shot so use it wisely" he clarified walking away holding his monster gun like a proud Momma bird.
"A teaser. Seriously!" I groaned, following Phil.
"You haven't earned the right to have anything remotely dangerous" he said.
I sighed and followed Phil towards the danger, my nerve endings buzzing with adrenaline.
