It was nearly the beginning of July and Kurt was quickly getting tired of not only the morning sickness, but of being stuck in their tiny apartment. They still had yet to announce the news of the pregnancy to any of their family and friends. With his first trimester ending, Kurt was excited to finally tell everyone the news.
Noticing how confined Kurt was starting to feel, Blaine started to come up with a plan. Places upstate were starting to reopen and Blaine thought it would be a nice surprise to take a road trip to Lima to visit with their family. They would be able to safely drive the 10 hour trip to spend a few weeks with Burt and Carole. This would allow them to see their family in person for the first time since Christmas, but they would be able to announce their news in person.
With July 4th quickly approaching, Blaine wanted to put his plan to action. On the morning of July 2nd, Blaine woke up and immediately started packing a bag for himself and two bags for Kurt along with another just for his hair products. As he prepared their bags, he let Kurt continue to sleep, thankful that he wasn't already up and in front of the toilet.
Their bags were packed and in the trunk of their car by 7:30am. After loading the car, Blaine gathered a cooler full of drinks and snacks for the long drive. The only thing left to do was wake Kurt and tell him of his surprise trip.
When he had come up with the plan, he had decided to make it a surprise for Burt but Kurt as well. Blaine managed to tell Carole of his plans but made it highly important to not let the father and son know of his plans. This way Carole could secretly prepare their room and make sure there was more than enough food in the house to feed the additional family members. Luckily for her, Burt would be at the Tire Shop all day and wouldn't return until dinner. This would give Blaine and Kurt enough time to arrive and surprise Burt.
Walking into their bedroom, Blaine silently sat down on the edge of the bed next to his husband. He pulled the covers back slowly to reveal the pleasant face of his own sleeping beauty. Smiling, Blaine gently placed a kiss upon his lips and watched as Kurt slowly started to wake. His eyes fluttered open as his sight landed on Blaine's smiling face.
"Good morning Sweetie, how are you feeling this morning?" Blaine asked.
Rising to a sitting position, Kurt responded, "I'm feeling great! Today feels like it's going to be a great day."
Smiling even wider, Blaine said, "I'm so happy to hear that. And I think I know why today's going to be great. Go get dressed and be ready to go in a half hour. And dress comfortably! We have a long day ahead but it's going to be worth the wait!"
"Blaine! I can't get ready in just a half hour! My morning routine takes an hour and that's without showering!" Kurt exclaimed.
"Kurt, you look beautiful the way you are. I think you can shorten your routine for one day. I promise I'll give you all the time you need tomorrow. And you can shower tonight instead," Blaine answered. Taping Kurt on the knee, he continued, "Now hurry up and get ready. I'll have a quick breakfast ready by the time you are done. And then we can head out."
"What do you mean? Are we going somewhere?" Kurt asked.
"Yes, now go get ready and I'll tell you once we're in the car," Blaine said as he pulled Kurt out of bed. He pushed his husband towards the bathroom. As Kurt passed the threshold to their bathroom, Blaine swatted his ass before running out of the room.
Jumping at the unexpected swat to his tush, Kurt exclaimed, "Yeah, you better run! And there better be a warm cinnamon roll waiting for me when I get out, Mr!"
An hour later, Kurt was dressed and munching on his second cinnamon roll as Blaine drove to an unknown destination. Noticing that they were headed out of the city, Kurt spoke up, "Blaine, will you finally tell me where we are going? And why is there a cooler in the backseat?"
Answering the second question first, Blaine said, "We have a cooler and even a bag of snacks because we are taking a road trip."
"A road trip! To where? Nothing is open!" Kurt exclaimed.
"Honey, do not worry. Where we are going, it doesn't matter if anything is open or not," Blaine responded. Reaching a hand over, Blaine placed his hand on Kurt's small baby bump and continued, "Why don't you get some more rest? I even put a spare pillow and blanket behind my seat."
Sighing and knowing he wouldn't get any answers, Kurt replied, "I guess I could take a nap. I didn't get to sleep as long as I expected to this morning. Someone just had to wake me up and insisted on getting me out of my nice warm bed. I wonder who would do that?"
Laughing, Blaine said, "I think it was your husband. Who has big plans for the day! Plans that could not happen in bed! Now get some rest. I'll wake you up when we stop for some lunch."
"Well, if you insist. You are lucky that I love you. And just happening to be carrying your child," Kurt eyed Blaine as he sank back into his seat.
"Love you too! And I love you even more for carrying our child. Now rest!" Blaine responded as he continued to drive.
Four hours later, they were halfway through Pennsylvania and Kurt's stomach was starting to grumble in his sleep. Blaine too was starting to get hungry, so he exited the highway and drove towards the nearest restaurant.
Pulling into the parking lot, Blaine put the car in park before reaching over to wake his husband. "Kurt, Sweetie, it's time to get some lunch. And from the noises I've been hearing for the last five minutes, I think you should be pretty hungry," Blaine said.
Opening his eyes for the second time that day, he looked over to once again his smiling husband by his side. Rubbing his bump, Kurt said, "I think the baby wants some Chicken and Waffles. Please tell me they have Chicken and Waffles."
Not surprised by his husband's craving, Blaine responded, "Well, it is a diner, so I am sure they have them or could easily prepare them. Now put your mask on and we can go get some food to prepare us for the rest of the drive."
Putting his mask on and exiting the car, Kurt asked, "And just how much further is our drive?"
Walking around the car, Blaine wrapped an arm around Kurt's waist as they walked towards the door. "Only about three or four hours," Blaine responded.
Opening the door to the diner, Blaine ushered for Kurt to go ahead of them. Looking around, they were amazed by the mom and pop feel this diner had. It felt so cozy and boy did the air smell good. You could smell so many different aromas wafting out from the kitchen.
The hostess led them over to a small booth in the corner of the diner, with empty tables surrounding it to help keep them socially distanced from other customers. They sat down across from each other as the hostess placed paper menus in front of them and pre-wrapped silverware.
Kurt quickly scanned the menu and was disappointed to not find what he was looking for on the menu. Whining, Kurt said, "Blaine, they don't have Chicken and Waffles on the menu! The baby doesn't want anything else!" Kurt looked at Blaine with a pout on his face.
Knowing he would never be able to convince Kurt to pick something else, Blaine quickly made a decision. "How about I go ask someone behind the counter if they could make it?" he asked.
"Oh, will you? That would be the best!" Kurt said as he perked up.
Standing up and placing his mask back on, Blaine said, "Of course I will! Nothing but the best for the two loves of my life."
Blaine rushed off to go speak with a kind looking man behind the counter. Lucky for Blaine, the man just happened to be the owner and knew full well about the craving pregnancy could bring. He and his wife had opened the diner 30 years ago as a young married couple, with their first child on the way. They now had four grown children who still helped out in the restaurant even with full-time jobs. As Blaine had explained his situation, he made sure to mention that he was willing to pay extra for them to create a meal that was not on the menu. The man would hear nothing of it and was more than happy to please his customers. Thanking the man, Blaine also ordered a burger for himself along with water for the two of them before heading back to rejoin his husband.
Looking up from his phone, Kurt smiled as Blaine slid into the seat across from him. Too hungry to wait for Blaine to speak, he asked, "So will they make it? I'm starving."
Taking off his mask, Blaine smiled as he wrapped his hand around his husband's hand, "Of course they will make it. I spoke to the owner and he was more than understanding and even offered to make it himself. You'll have to remind me to leave him a nice tip. I tried telling him I would pay extra but he wouldn't listen," Blaine said.
"Oh, you are the best husband a guy could ask for! Thank you, thank you!" Kurt said happily as he looked forward to his meal.
An hour later, their stomachs were full and they were once again back on the road. As Blaine drove along, Kurt started to notice that the scenery around them started to look very familiar. As they continued to pass exit after exit, Kurt finally spoke up when they passed a 'Entering Ohio' sign. Turning to face Blaine, Kurt asked, "Why are we in Ohio?"
A huge grin formed on Blaine's face, "Well, how else would we tell your parents about our news?" Blaine hinted.
Staring at his husband with wide eyes, Kurt responded, "Wait, you mean, we're going to see my dad! And Carole? Why didn't you tell me? Do they know we are coming?"
"I wanted to keep it a surprise. For you. And for Burt. I told Carole so that she could be prepared. And your dad will be at work all day, so we should be able to get there before he gets home," Blaine said.
"Carole knows? You didn't tell her why we were coming, did you?" Kurt questioned nervously.
"No, she didn't know about the baby. I just told her we were getting tired of being stuck in our small apartment and that we could use the time away. And since it's been so long since you've seen your dad, I wanted it to be as much of a surprise for you as it will be for him," Blaine said as he continued to drive.
"You are the absolute best! I just knew today was going to be a great day and I didn't even realize why. Oh, I am so excited to see my dad. And we can finally tell him about the baby!" Kurt exclaimed.
"Yes, I can't wait! Do you know how hard it's been trying to keep this from your dad?" Blaine questioned.
Placing a hand on his baby bump, Kurt smiled as he said, "I can't wait to tell my dad that he's gonna be a grandpa! And I just know he's going to spoil this baby. Whether it's a girl or boy, I wouldn't be surprised if they have him wrapped around their little finger."
A few hours later, they pulled up to the familiar house. Although it was not the house he grew up in, it was the one he had helped pick out when his dad had married Carole. It was the place that held so many memories of his high school years. Many of which were of him and Blaine. Noticing that his dad's truck was parked in the driveway, Kurt started to jump in his seat with excitement.
Laughing at his husband's kid like excitement, Blaine exited the car before walking around to open the passenger side door. He held his hand out to help Kurt out of the car. Taking a look at his husband, Blaine realized he was showing more than he had realized. In their rush to leave this morning, neither of them had noticed how much Kurt had grown overnight. With it being the beginning of summer, there was no way he could hide the bump behind layers of clothing.
"Babe, I think we should just tell them when we go in. I don't think you can hide this anymore," Blaine said as he placed a hand over the bump.
Kurt placed his hand over Blaine's as he looked up into his husband's eyes, "Yeah, it's way too hot for me to wear a jacket. And anyways, we came here to tell them. Why not tell them right away? And since I'm showing, it's proof that it's real."
Kurt placed a quick kiss upon Blaine's lips before moving their hands to their side, still held together. The soon to be fathers walked up the path together before knocking on the door.
Hearing the sound of someone at the door, Carole knew that it must be Kurt and Blaine. She quickly stepped out of the kitchen and into the living room. "Burt, why don't you go answer the door? I wonder who that could be?" She questioned him as she pretended to be unaware.
Burt turned the tv off before standing up to make his way towards the front door. He grumbled on his way there, wondering who the hell could be at his door. Didn't they know it was almost dinner time? Little did he know, that's exactly why they were there.
He opened the two to see two smiling faces, faces of his son and son-in-law, whom he had not seen in months. Blaine had his arm wrapped around Kurt's waist, smiling wide. Kurt on the other hand, had his hands resting on his stomach.
Before Burt could greet the two, Kurt spoke up, "Do you have an extra spot for three, Grandpa?" Kurt asked with an equally wide smile as his husband.
