Agent Smith was a brut. A heavy, broad, giant, double my size, who's arms refused to obey my demands. I gripped onto Agent Smiths gorilla hands and heaved him around a burning car. Breathing heavily I swore under my breath.
How could a being be this heavy?
His boots dragged behind him making my task ten folds harder. I was seriously debating whether I should just ditch his shoes.
Ten minutes later and I had dumped the agent in a green trash bin hidden in an alleyway I hopped would stay safe. It had taken all my might and more to dump the bear-sized human into the trash bin which just about allowed him to fit in.
I jogged towards the building with the Tesseract which had opened a portal. For the sake of humanity I hopped that it had an off switch.
I had picked up a blaster from a fallen Chitauri warrior and any aliens that was not Thor or myself, I aimed to kill. It was easier to shoot my victims from the shadows, staying close to buildings and shooting any Chitauri out in the open. Given that my sight had improved greatly, aiming and shooting a warrior was an easy feat-only needing one bullet. It meant that I avoided hand-to-hand combat, which I thought might be in my best interest.
As if the divine Gods had it out for me, my stolen blaster jammed leaving me with a glorified sceptre. I huffed at the inconvenience then grimaced at the inevitable bruises that would surly follow if I was to go hand to hand combat.
I charged at a warrior, sceptre raised and ready to strike. It roared in response and raced towards me. Identical weapons met mid strike but sharply I twisted my body to the side and swept my sceptre under its feet. It fell with a thump, tripping me as it went down. I grunted at the force.
The stomp of boots echoed in the distance.
The Chitauri rushed to get up and fight again but I remained on the ground and moved my hands to sit comfortably under my head. I crossed my legs and I smiled smugly up at the Warrior who was about to chop me in half.
"You should really pay attention to your surroundings, friend" I quipped at the warrior using my thumb to point left.
The creature didn't even bother to look where I pointed, which would have saved it's pathetic life. Inwardly, I rolled my eyes at the ignorant behaviour of the alien. As if wielding an axe, it raised is Sceptre in the air-
Metal cut through the air and a violent clunk was heard as metal tore through flesh, the Chitauri's reptilian head falling from its body. It fell with a thump on the pavement and I grimaced at the sight. Shaking the image from my head, I stood up ready to face the greatest threat I had yet to encounter.
Steve Rodgers.
Standing in all his glory he looked menacing. Blood trickling down his shield where he had sliced through the Chitauri. His patriotic colours; a vivid display of his country, his loyalty, stood stark against the war zone that was New York. His golden hair swept back, as if he had ran his hand through it several times in the last hour in which sweat and grime kept it back. His ocean eyes pinned at me and I imagined a surge of anger held by a dam ready to burst. Steam funnelled out of his ears in torrents.
I gulped.
"What. Are. You. Doing. Here!" He yelled ensuring that each word was emphasised.
I hadn't noticed Nat, who flanked to his right. She stood tall, not a hair out of place as she looked at me in amusement. A smirk on her lips as if she had expected nothing else from me. I felt unnerved at the thought.
I shrugged shaking away the unease. "I thought I'd bring the muscle" I said slyly hoping to lighten the tension.
He ran his hand through his hair and looked around us. "How did you even get here" he demanded, authority slick in his voice.
"That's not important. What's important is stopping that army-" I pointed to the sky "from destroying New York and quite possibly YOUR world. We need to close that portal now." I insisted hopping not to involve Agent Smith.
He groaned and looked to Nat for help. Still smirking, she crossed her arms. "Your call Cap" she remarked.
After a long second he placed a finger to his ear and spoke "Team, Kyon is with me. Don't ask why or how because I don't even want to know right now. Anyone have eyes on Loki?"
Relief flooded through my veins. He wasn't going to send me back.
With my new found enhanced hearing I was able to make out shouts coming from his earpiece about my arrival- mostly from Tony. Although I blocked out his voice and honed in on Clint when he said Loki was within his sight.
Nat handed me an ear piece, whether she always carried a spare or she knew I would need one, I didn't know. I was thankful all the same. Following Rodgers and Nat I placed the earpiece in and was welcomed by a string of curses from Tony. I winced, my ears still sensitive.
"How can I help?" I spoke into the earpiece and instantly regretted it when Tony began ranting.
"You could've helped by staying on that fucking boat!" He snapped.
"Language Tony, there's a kid here." Rodgers heaved.
"Exactly Cap, a kid. In the middle of a war zone." He grunted "Your lucky there's a giant alien worm on my tail right now or I would blast you into next week kid."
"Aren't I one lucky soul" I commented earning a chuckle from Clint.
Nat, Steve and I stayed on the ground helping the humans get to safety. We took down any and all aliens we encountered working in a team. Surprisingly we had found harmony, each person working with the other efficiently taking down anything in our path. Steve using his shield, Nat her weapons and crazy-amazing warrior skills while I used my broken sceptre to whack, trip or jab the aliens. We acted like a team and I knew I could get addicted to this feeling of adrenaline. This feeling of teamwork. Of unity.
Although no matter how many Chitauri Warriors we stopped, here, on the ground, it hadn't even scratched the number zooming past us in the air, mocking us in our futile attempt to stop this invasion. Nat seemed to notice as well as she told Steve to throw her up in the air with his shield. She ran at him, jumped and was thrusted by his inhuman strength into the air where she twisted and caught onto the edge of a flying alien. Mentally I applauded her performance and skill.
"So Steve, Care to give me a boast?" I questioned, eyeing the aliens zooming past us. A questionable but plausible plan was bubbling at the surface of my mind as I watched them, though for it to work I would just have to be stealthy. Quiet and unnoticed.
"Absolutely not. You're staying here we're I can keep an eye on you." He glared at me, as if to make sure I knew he was serious.
I looked to a car to my side and smirked. "Sure Captain" I saluted, while timing how fast each alien flew past.
he nodded. "Good, now-
"Although I have to say," I interrupted deviously. "That I'm not very good at following such sensible and wise orders."
I sprinted before Steve could even contemplate my intentions and ran to the car, swiftly jumping on the bonnet and thrusting myself with all my strength into the air. My breath caught in my throat as I clasped onto the bottom of the flying vehicle, battering my chest off the strange metal. I swore at the pain and tucked my dangling feet in.
Once I was secure I closed my eyes and while ignoring the violent wind brushing against my face I pictured the Chitauri in my mind. Their leathery skin, armour, strange fingers and reptilian eyes. A tingling sensation prickled my skin and I felt my body click and pop as it lengthened and thickened with hard muscle. It left a dirty feeling on my skin as I changed. Grunting inhumanly I crawled up the back of the vehicle.
The driving Chitauri looked behind him and simply grunted. I couldn't help the smile that had crept onto my face for the fact I had not immediately been thrown overboard. Slowly, quietly I managed to get into position behind the creature.
I tapped him on the shoulder.
Before it could react I whacked it over the head with my foreign arm, the metal covering my palm making a sickening sound as I knocked him off the vehicle.
I barely acknowledged its screams as it fell and jumped over to the controls, quickly swerved to the right, narrowly avoiding a building.
Back in the game!
Only now once the adrenaline of the past few minutes faded I realised that Steve was yelling through the ear-piece to get my attention. I grimaced, as I changed back into myself. The tingling sensation slowly disappearing.
"Chill Steve, I'm up. It was a success. I'm-
I gritted my teeth as I shot down one of the creatures climbing along a building.
"I'm making a difference now that I'm not limited to the ground." I finished. "Unlike you." I joked, a sly attempt at lightening the mood.
"Kid we have to work in a team if we want to stop this invasion. No single missions. We have to work as one and I'm in charged so you need to follow my orders." He ordered ignoring my side remark.
I rolled my eyes. "Yes sir."
I flew towards the Stark tower, swooping and diving on my new toy. I intentionally crashed on the roof near the machine keeping the portal open, my landing skills limited. The second my feet crunched the gravel on the surface a gentle wave of power washed over me. Flowing through every muscle, tissue and bone. Each nerve endings in my body hummed in response to the Tesseract. I sucked in a breath as I walked closer.
Everything around me melted away as I focused solely on the glowing cube humming, alluring me. It pulsed in beat with my own heart. It sang to me. Called to me, whispering about lost galaxies and planets. Perhaps it would know about my own planet, my home. Perhaps it would know if anyone other than I had survived. I had to know. I had to get closer. If I could just touch it.
I reached out, my arm outstretched and fingertips tingling in anticipation-I was jerked backwards, a hand on my arm pulled me away. Stumbling, I tripped and fell on my behind. The motion breaking me from the trance I had been in mere moments ago.
"Don't touch it" Nat huffed, hands planted on her hips. "We don't know how it works"
Squinting, I barley nodded. Words were lost to me, my mind still humming from the Tesseracts influence. Nat watched me critically as I tucked loose strands of hair behind my ear.
My eyes never left the cube as I whispered softly "How do we shut this thing down then?"
A sigh. "I'm not sure. I don't suppose they teach you how to close portals at alien school?"
"Close portals, yes." I stood up, walking closer to the cub to examine it. "But to extract one of the great six gems that influence the very existence of life it's self is another matter. I doubt even my Papa would know how to close such an entity without time to study its essence." I hummed as I listened to it whisper, tugging me towards it again. "We could. . . throw something at it?" I suggested blandly.
Nat only rolled her eyes at me. Just before I could question if she had a better plan, something red and gold zoomed past us, towards the entrance of the portal. I squinted then almost stumbled backwards in realization as Tony flew straight towards the mothership on the other side of the portal. He carried with him, what looked like a missal. Placing a finger to my ear I stumbled "T-Tony what are you doing?"
He didn't reply.
"He's going to take them down on the inside. Destroy the mothership before it can cross over here." Nat spoke matter-of-factly.
I turned to Nat "B-But the after shock it w-would-
"Kill him. Yes." she finished sombrely. "It's the best outcome. Tony knows that. Its what needs to be done to save thousands if not millions"
Roaring silence filled my ears. Another death. Another life lost. How many had to die before the Cosmic Gods where satisfied? How much suffering was needed before they were satisfied and would allow people to live long fulling lives? Where was the happiness? All I have seen is death and pain on Earth. A place my people where supposed to care for.
Tony slipped through the portal, the missal falling from his hands. It headed straight to the mothership as hopped. Tony, on the other hand floated ominously in space. Not yet close enough to slip back to the city. Perhaps he would never get close enough to cross that threshold before the missal exploded and destroyed everything in it's path. Including him.
It wasn't even that I had liked Tony, let alone cared for him. I had only talked to the man a handful of times which had been barely pleasant at the best of times. It was the principle. It was the fact that in my short life I had seen and experienced enough death that I wasn't having it. No one would die on my watch.
Perhaps it was that very thought that caused me to run towards the voices which had been whispering to me. Calling since I had first laid my eyes on the cube. I embrace the voices and threw my palms onto the Tesseract.
Cold; striking and pure filled my every sense. Frost crept up along my fingers as the voices grew louder, deafening. They filled my head, screaming about the sickness and misery of the universe. My ears bleed at the ferocity. The torment they would cause if ever reunited with their brothers and sisters, the other five gems. Pure, unrelenting terror flooded my veins.
The havoc the infinity stones would create would level worlds-galaxies but through the pain, through the suffering I caught sight of home. Not Mercury, my home planet. No, it was not of the past. I caught sight of a promise, a future through the softest milky brown, freckles of deep green, hazel eyes. A swirl of warm honey so welcoming that it thawed the ice around me, so soothing that it quieted the raging voices. It was through these very eyes that I realised I would find home. Find love and stability, laughter and joy.
I gripped the Tesseract tighter, the voices but a soft purr as I spoke. "Let him pass then close." I demanded, my voice foreign to my own ears. The beautiful hazel eyes faded from sight as the voices grew, not in defiance to my demand but in agreement.
Exhaustion slammed into me and I felt my grip on the Tesseract loosing. My eyelids became lead and I struggled to keep them open. I faintly recalled falling to the ground and Nat calling my name as she peered over my slumped form. My eyes stung as I looked past the wave of red hair hovering over me to look towards the sky. Towards a red and gold man falling through the sky and a green beast jumping to catch him.
My eyes finally drooped closed and I welcomed the darkness that came with it.
