"Hey, Ei! Get up!" Bakugo whined trying to move his rock of a husband, the smell of coffee and bacon wafting through the house. The usually energetic Kirishima just turned around and buried himself further in the blankets. The first warning sign.
Bakugo made sure not to sigh in annoyance as he wanted to. The memory of having to console a weeping Kirishima at 2 am flashing before his eyes. He instead slid into bed next to him and slipped his hand through his husbands coarse, gel-free hair.
"Are you going through one of your moods again?" He asked softly, Bakugos eyebrows furrowed worriedly when he caught a slight nod under the baby blue sheets.
"Do you need anything babe?" He asked in the gentle voice he only reserved for the man currently curled up in front of him. Kirishima shook his head and curled himself into a tighter ball.
"I love you Ei. Remember that." Bakugo whispered as he softly kissed Kirishima's forehead. He caught the almost imperceptible tremor that ran through the bigger man's body and took that as his answer. With a last kiss to the mostly covered forehead, Bakugo pushed off the bed to start his daily routine.
"Mornin' boss!" Kaminari greeted Bakugo brightly as he walked into Ground Riot hero agency. Kaminari looked behind him expectantly and frowned when he didn't see his best bro.
"Where's boss no. 2?" Kaminari asked as he trailed after Bakugo. Bakugo's constantly furrowed brow furrowed even further as he clenched his fist tightly, desperately wanting to save his love from the one demon he couldn't lay his hands on. It was only a testament to how long Kaminari had spent by the couple's side, that he immediately knew what was wrong.
"He's in one of his funks again?" He said, losing a bit of his bright smile. The image of his best friend weeping and cursing at himself burned into is brain even with how long had passed.
Bakugo nodded before shutting the door to his office.
The click of the door signalled the appearance of Number 2 hero Ground Zero. Katsuki Bakugo's problems and worries took a backseat as he began sorting the cases on his desk, allotting each one to a hero team.
The monotonous grunt work lasted all day. Once again, Bakugo realised how much simpler this work was with his partner by his side. But no partnership is a perfect 50/50, and today was just his day to pick up the slack. With that thought embedded in his mind over his countless therapy sessions, be readjusted the glasses on his face and began reorganising with a righteous fury.
Bakugo pulled his door open at 9 pm, a whole 3 hours later than he'd usually be, and found his husband exactly where he thought he would. Curled up on the couch, their blanket wrapped snuggly around his massive body, A random show on Netflix playing in the background.
A small smile crept onto Bakugos face, unbidden. He'd missed the idiot.
He half-collapsed into the couch, and Kirishima groggily snuggled into his warmth. He heavily blinked his eyes open, his face still painfully devoid of his usual bright smile.
"You feeling any better?" Bakugo asked gruffly, hands naturally sinking into familiar red locks.
"Yeah..." A soft, hoarse mumble escaped from Kirishima's lips. The lack of use of his voice catching up to him. "'m sorry..."
"Oi! Absolutely none of that!" Bakugo gruffly admonished, a heavy feeling settling over his chest as it usually does when he saw Kirishima like this. Kirishima buried his face into Bakugo's torso.
"...It's not too late, Suki... The papers haven't gone through yet." Kirishima mumbled, hot tears running down his face. Bakugo felt like time had stopped for one sick moment as he processed what Kirishima was insinuating. He felt his face heat up as he ground his teeth aggressively. He cupped Kirishima's jaw and jerked it away from his torso.
"You little shit... you think adoption papers are why I'm with you? And it is too late. 8 years too late. Your brain can chew itself out as much as it wants but nothing will ever change that you're it for me Ei." Bakugo's expression softened a bit, his thumb moving to swipe away some stray tears. He's lost count of how many times he's had to say it but he'd say it every day for the rest of his life if it made Kirishima feel even the slightest bit better. "You're beautiful just the way you are Eijirou. I would do anything for you to start believing that too."
More tears rushed down Kirishima's face as he sluggishly brought a hand around Bakugo's waist "...Love you so much, Suki..." Eijirou muttered, his eyes fluttering close again.
Bakugo just kissed his forehead again before relaxing into the couch, watching the last couple moments of an episode of Lucifer, but not registering a word. His mind going back to the first and only time he ever thought he'd actually lose Eijirou.
'Kirishima has been acting weird for the past week' Bakugo thought as he walked into class 3-A. He observed his unusually quiet boyfriend find his seat, an odd mix of a grimace and smile stapled on the red head's lips. Bakugo watched him make small talk with Kaminari and Ashido, still scarily quiet compared to his usual boisterous self. He watched as the redheads gaze lingered on his reflection on the glass of the window before quickly looking away, the grimace winning for a moment.
'Oh well, he'll come to me if he needs me.' Bakugo shrugged before being dragged into whatever stupid argument Kaminari and Ashido were embroiled in.
But the situation only got worse. Kirishima began to overeat, you would seldom see him without a protein bar or sugary treat sticking out of his mouth. And then he missed more and more classes just because he couldn't get out of bed. Everyone was confused by this behaviour but everyone also didn't think it was anything too serious.
That was until Kirishima shut them all out.
Even his sparse conversation disappeared, along with his bright smile and in its place were snow-white earbuds that helped with his endeavour to isolate himself. He began to sleep in classes even when he managed to drag himself out of bed. He'd never say a thing when questioned, either, he would just flash a pathetic excuse of a smile and give some random excuse.
His binge eating was soon followed my starvation, though no one knew it was even happening until Bakugo noticed how loose Kirishima's pants had gotten.
It was then that the class understood the severity of whatever it was Kirishima was facing. Bakugo had been the one to inform Aizawa and Kirishima was immediately assigned a counsellor.
The situation truly came to a head during the lunch break after Kirishima's first counselling session.
"Let's break up." Kirishima's first words in weeks shook Bakugo to his very core.
"Wha-?" Bakugo blinked in confusion as he looked at Kirishima's impassive face. The rest of the Baku-squad were in similar states of shock as they all sat around their usual table.
"Let's break up." Kirishima repeated calmly before getting up and leaving the table with his lunch tray. He deposited his tray and had gotten quite far away before he heard the heavy thudding of footsteps behind him.
"What the hell shitty hair!" Bakugo roared as he shoved Kirishima into an empty classroom, Kirishima's collar was grasped tightly in shaking hands as he was slammed against a wall.
"I meant what I said." Kirishima said calmly as he tried to push Bakugo away, but the smaller man was nothing if not stubborn.
"Y-you... What? Got bored of me already o-or something?" Bakugo stuttered out in complete shock, who the heck was this man in front of him? He definitely wasn't his Ei...
"No. I just can't do this anymore. For your sake, let's end this Suki." Kirishima's grip on Bakugo's hand grew tighter as his voice became rawer towards the end.
"Explain Shitty Hair." Bakugo said gruffly, his eyes rapidly filling with tears.
"Turns out, I'm more messed up in the head than I could've ever imagined. For weeks my mind has been chewing itself up, telling me how useless I am. How absolutely disgusting I am, physically and on the inside. I've had this happen before and I always thought it was just me being self-aware of my shortcomings. I have depressive episodes Suki. I'm so privileged and I have so much in my life but turns out I'm just a selfish, ungrateful dumbass with shitty hair." Kirishima breathed out a bitter chuckle at that, covering his eyes with his wide palm as tears dripped down his jaw. "You deserve so much better. We'll still be friends, and it'll kill me when you finally f-find the guy who-whos perfect for you but, don't waste your time on me Suki. I'm too much work, too broken, too fu-"
Kirishima's tirade was cut off by a pair of warm, wet lips.
"Shut the hell up." Bakugo growled, cheeks streaked with tear tracks. "How dare you... You thought I'd what? Abandon you? Just nod my head like a good little boy and walk away? I fucking love you shit head! Does that mean nothing to you?" Bakugo loosened his grip on Kirishima's collar and thumped his forehead onto Kirishima's collar bones. "I only want you... I don't ever want anyone but you..."
"Suki, I love you too... S-so fucking much, that's why I can't let myself become the thing that gets in the way of your dream. Think about it Bakugo. Mental Disorders are still seen as taboo. My depression will get out eventually, and when that happens the backlash will be extreme. If you're connected to me... that backlash will fall on you too. A same-sex couple is already frowned upon, now add in a Mental Disorder to that mix... It won't be taken well Kats..." Bakugo looked at the man in front of him incredulously. Too shocked to even muster up his usual rage.
"Y-you... You want to leave me cause... Same-sex couples? Have you thought about this before?" Kirishima smirked bitterly in response.
"You're bi Bakugo... I love you with all my heart but I've always known that we couldn't last. I thought we'd at least get until graduation but with my depression added to the mix... I just didn't want to subject you to-" This time Kirishima's words were cut off by a fury filled punch that sent him sprawling into the floor. Bakugo immediately straddled him and punched him some more, he only stopped when Kirishima grabbed his bleeding fists.
"Bakugo stop! Your hands-"
"FUCK my hands! And fuck you shitty hair! When was I going to find out about this life plan you supposedly have for me?" Bakugo asked in a scarily calm voice.
"Bakugo- I-"
"Did you for one second even consider that I may want to actually stay with you? And my dream- goddamnit- My dream changed the minute you made me fall for you, you big oaf!"
"Why would you-?"
"I don't even want you to finish that question. You cant see how amazing you are cause apparently, you're as blind as a fucking bat. But no matter what you say, I refuse to give you up. Your smiles, your tears, your heart, your scars they're all mine. A-and you know how possessive I am. My dream- shit- My dream, won't be complete without you standing there next to me, shitty hair. I-I cannot make you s-stay b-but..." Bakugo's voice hitched when he heard the sob that tore through his lover. Two heavy arms wrapped around Bakugos's shoulders for the first time in weeks as Kirishima wept into the blonde's shoulder.
"I-I... Katsuki... Katsuki... I can't ever be cured... I'm so tired... I-I... What am I going to do? I didn't want to l-leave you. Don't leave me, please. I know I'm not good enough but pl-please..." Kirishima wailed, soaking Bakugo's uniform. But he just held his distraught lover closer to him as he ran his fingers through coarse red hair.
"You are... Ei, you're too fucking good for me. But even with that being the case, I'm never letting you go Ei. Ever. We'll figure everything out together, just like we always have and how we always will. I'll be here Ei, I belong with you. You're my home." Bakugo whispered the last bit so quietly he was sure the wind had carried it away but the way Ei shivered under him told him otherwise.
The couple played hooky for the rest of the day. Bakugo was comfortably draped over Kirishima in Kirishima's bed, listening to the deep rumble that originated from his chest as he spilt all his darkest fears and insecurities. And every time the boy beneath his trembled, Bakugo wished with all his heart that Kirishima could see himself how everyone else saw him. He wished he could see the brave, beautiful, generous, compassionate soul everyone else saw when he looked in the mirror.
That day, despite all its perils, cemented their relationship as they displayed themselves in their entirety, scars and all. That day hardened the fact that they were so much more than a high school fling. It unlocked the door to a relationship built on friendship, acceptance, honesty, and open communication. Even in the most trying of times, this enabled them to work through everything. The weekly therapy sessions the two attended also helped temper Bakugo's anger issues and provided Kirishima with methods to deal with his personal demons.
Their relationship was something they both fought for. They fought through, the hate-filled words thrown at them, the lack of acceptance and understanding displayed by the older generation and even their own demons. And that got exhausting at times, but they knew what they had was worth every hurdle they had to overcome.
Bakugo awoke to the smell of coffee, and a ray of sunshine landing squarely in his face. He looked to his side to see his husband placing a tray of food next to him.
"Morning..." Bakugo mumbled and almost let out a sigh of relief when he received a slightly subdued version of his favourite smile.
"You sleep well?" Kirishima asked Bakugo as he sat down next to him, gently cupping Bakugo's chin in his huge palm.
"Of course you big lug. I take it you moved me to the bed." Bakugo said, voice still thick with sleep. Kirishima nodded, their eyes never breaking contact taking in the sight of each other, bathed in the morning light. Kirishima caressed Bakugo's jaw before leaning in and softly pressing his slightly chapped lips to Bakugo's soft ones.
"Thank you Katsuki..." Kirishima mumbled as he looked at him with so much reverence that the hardass, Bakugo Katsuki actually blushed.
"Yeah, yeah... You coming to work today?" Dismissal followed by deflecting, it was such a Bakugo move that Kirishima couldn't help the smile crawling onto his face.
"Absolutely! Wouldn't miss the chance to see my husband in that tight tank top of his!~" Kirishima joked, and moved away with a laugh when his husband tried to swing at him as he sat up.
Kirishima was resting his head against the blonde's shoulder as the smaller man devoured his breakfast, A random show droning on in the background. When the shrill sound of the phone ringing filled the room.
Kirishima lazily reached for his phone, his eyes widening when he saw the caller ID.
AllMight Adoption Centre
"Suki..." Kirishima breathed as he showed Bakugo the caller ID.
"Whatever happens, we'll get through it together." Bakugo promised as he clasped Kirishima's hand in his own. Kirishima gulped and nodded, his hands shakey and sweaty from excitement and nerves.
The ringing stopped as he picked up the phone.
"Hello, Eijiro Bakugo here..."
A/N: To clear up any confusion on the name thing, After Kirishima and Bakugo got married Kirishima decided to hyphenate so he became Eijirou Kirishima-Bakugo. He still uses Kirishima in all his heroic pursuits though.
I don't know why I put so much thought into this but here ya go XD
This was sort of a projection fic cause I was feeling particularly shitty about myself and wanted what my head cannon version of Kirishima and Bakugo had XD
Hope yall liked it!
