AUGUST 1917
"Oh my, what a marvellous tune"
It was the best night, never would forget how we moved
The whole place
Was dressed to the nines
And we were dancing, dancing
Like we're made of starlight
The evening was alive with light and music and passion. I am standing on the downstairs balcony watching the pretty girls in pretty dresses enchant the officers, as young as they were hopeful.
I feel someone move to stand beside me and lean into their warmth. I turn to face them as one might turn to face the sun and let its rays kiss one's face. Unsurprisingly, he looks like the sun. His tanned skin, golden hair and eyes like the stars.
"Would you care to dance?" he asks in a voice that sounds like home. "It would be a sin for lady like you to do anything otherwise."
"Amen." I laugh. "No lady should be left idle. It's our job to dance like we're made of starlight!"
He said, "Look at you, worrying so much about things you can't change
You'll spend your whole life singing the blues
If you keep thinking that way"
He was tryna to skip rocks on the ocean saying to me
"Don't you see the starlight, starlight
Don't you dream impossible things"
He takes my hand and leads me through the ornate glass doors into the ballroom. We lit all our finest Crystal chandeliers so the candlelight dances around the room. We are just one of many couples in the dance floor, smitten as if just for one.
"Why do you look sad?" he asks. I am surprised. Most people say I am a closed book, but this man has a read my soul.
"Because you're such a wonderful dancer." I say. "I hate to think that after tonight I'll never see you dance again. If I could I would stop all the clocks and stay in this moment for the rest of my life."
"But their are so many moments to come." he promises.
"I don't want them. I'll trade them all in a heartbeat if I can keep this one forever."
"How can a girl who shines like her name is Hope seem so hopeless?"
"My name isn't Hope. It's Daisy." I laugh.
Ooh, ooh he's talking crazy
Ooh, ooh dancing with me
Ooh, ooh we could get married
Have ten kids and teach 'em how to dream
At the end of the dance I fall into his arms. I feel as if I could die from laughing!
"Daisy, darling." Jay says, burying his face in my hair. "Share more moments with me, share every moment with me."
"That would make me the happiest girl on Earth." I promise.
And we were dancing, dancing
Like we're made of starlight, starlight
Like we dream impossible dreams
Like starlight, starlight
Like we dream impossible dreams
Don't you see the starlight, starlight
Don't you dream impossible things
