OCTOBER 1917

Midnight, you come and pick me up, no headlights

Long drive, could end in burning flames or paradise

Fade into view, oh,

It's been a while since I have even heard from you

And I should just tell you to leave 'cause I

Know exactly where it leads but I

Watch it go round and round each time

So this is what a breaking heart feels like? I swore I would never let a man make me feel this way but here is Jay, with his sapphire eyes and electric soul, breaking mine without even trying.

"I'm sick of everyone!" I scream. "Everyone and their snotty idea about what is and isn't good!"

"Daisy, darling." Jay hurries after me. "What do you mean?"

"I mean what they say about me and you. Improper" I spit the word. "Because we aren't engaged."

The obvious solution to this is to marry. The perfect solution to this is to marry. Jay must be a fool to think I've been following him round all summer, ruining my daisy white reputation, for any reason other that I'm head over heels, would die for him in love.

But, somehow, this daylight clear solution doesn't touch him. "Don't worry about them, Darling." He wraps me in his arms. "To me, you are still perfect. You have the purest heart and that's all that matters."

I melt under his embrace. Even with the stormiest of tempers, Jay has this way of bringing about the calm and I find myself powerless to fight him.

You got that James Dean daydream look in your eye

And I got that red lip, classic thing that you like

And when we go crashing down, we come back every time

'Cause we never go out of style, we never go out of style

"Daisy." his voice breaks the silence. "What is this really about."

I jump.

"I love you."

He turns me around so we're face to face and stares into my eyes right to my soul.

"I love you." he echoes. I kiss him passionately.

"Then ask me." I prompt.

"Ask you what?" he seems confused.

"Ask me." I repeat.

"Daisy." he deflates. I understand. I pull away.

"Daisy!" he pleads.

"No! No!" I begin to sob as I run back into the dark night.

Take me home

Just take me home

Yeah just take me home, oh

He chases after me, calling my name but I refuse to listen. Eventually, he grabs my arm pulls me back towards him. I try to fight him but he doesn't let go. He never does.

"Daisy, listen, please." he begs but I carry on fighting him. It is too painful for me to listen to his excuses.

He carries on talking over my protestations.

"I'm about to return to Europe. You always hear of these men marrying young women so full of life and hope and possibilities. And then the men are lost to the war and the women..." he trails off. I am no longer fighting. The idea of losing Jay leaves me powerless to fight. "The women who are widowed are left as lost to the world as the men. I can't do that to you."

I throw my arms around him and bury my face in his chest. "Don't get lost. Come home to me, bring me stories of England and France, legends of Castles and Kings and French fashion. But just come home."

"I'll always come home, Daisy darling."

"I'll wait." I promise
