I looked up. Scott. Then I realized what happened. It was as if all my predatory instincts snapped back and I was just me again. The first thing I noticed was I wasn't hungry anymore, nice. Then I followed Scott's horrified gaze to a groan in the room. My eyes dropped down to Allison. My chest constricted in horror. Blood leaked out of her neck and she was so still that she could have been dead without the sluggish heartbeat that penetrated the air.
"Allison." Scott chocked out, dropping down to her side and putting pressure on her wound. As soon as Scott moved, I was gone. I didn't even look to see if he tried to talk to me. I just ran, as far and as fast as possible. I was out the shed door and several miles down the road in about two minutes flat. I barely noticed that the speed I was running at was impossible. Guess I have the insane vampire speed as well.
The next town was small but they did have a hotel. The sun was going to be up in one hour, if I can get inside, I will be safe from it. I wiped the blood from my mouth and walked in to the hotel. I went straight to the night clerk, a high schooler by the looks of it. I could hear his heart beat steadily through the air. I felt sick.
"Hey, can I have one of the rooms please, I just need it for the day, I'll be leaving later tonight." I winced at the desperation in my voice, but still stared at the kid hoping he couldn't tell I was dead. Wishing actually, that this would be fast and easy. His heart beat stayed the same, still pulsating through the air. I resisted the urge to pace and instead dug my nails into my left palm.
"Yeah, check out when you want man." He handed me a hotel key, third floor. I made sure to walk, not accidently use my powers on the way out of the lobby.
Turning toward the nearest staircase, I bounded up the stairs two at a time, my mind racing. I nearly killed Allison. Was she even still alive? No, don't think like that, I heard her heartbeat. I quickly inserted the key to my room and placed the DO NOT DISTURB sign on the handle before slamming it and locking it. I quickly crossed the room and pulled the thick curtains over the windows shut. The room plunged into darkness. I still could see fine.
I collapsed in the corner of the room on the floor, back to the wall and knees pulled tight to my chest, scared. I have to run though; I have to get further away from Beacon Hills. I couldn't risk hurting any of my friends again, or Dad. I pulled my wallet from my pocket and looked inside it, I had my debit card, which I took out and broke in half before kicking the pieces away from me. They could use my spending to track me. I had forty-bucks in cash total. Enough for a bus ride to somewhere no one could find me. Then I can figure out how to control my predator side.
I shuddered. My mind kept replaying the scene with Allison and her dad. At least they were okay, I heard two heartbeats before I left. The look on Scott's face though, he'll never forgive me for that. Wait… Scott was there. Three people, two heartbeats. Ice raced through my veins. I killed them. Chris was dead, Allison on the verge or actually dead by now. I was a murderer. I would be relieved if Allison hunted me down, but she wasn't going to be able to. I eyed the wooden nightstand across from me. I could break it and suicide out. Wooden stake to the heart takes vamps out. My gut twisted at the thought, I would never be able to. I'd just have to hope that Scott or maybe Derek would hunt me down in revenge. My throat clogged and I wept. Hot tears leaked down my face as I sobbed for the loss of my friend. How would I ever live with the fact that I was a murderer? How does anybody?
I woke up later that night. The room was totally black, and silent. I stood up from the corner of the room I inadvertently passed out in. Tear tracks were still visible on my face. I very quickly scrubbed them off my face and glimpsed at the clock. Ten pm. Buses would still be running for another couple hours. I dropped my wallet on the ground and took my forty bucks in cash. I grasped the handle of the hotel door but then I realized something. If I payed for the hotel room, I wouldn't have enough for a bus ride to anywhere. I dropped the handle and moved to the window. It didn't have a latch. Was vampire super strength enough for me to survive a fall from the third floor?
Guess I could find out. I wound up and punched the window as hard as I could. It shattered loudly and pain laced up my knuckles. I pulled my hand back hissing in pain, watching in amazement as the cut skin closed back up in rapid speed. Vampire super healing was extremely fast. I wonder how long a broken leg would take to heal. Hopefully not long. I cleared the rest of the glass out of my way before balancing on the edge. The cool night air was refreshing. I closed my eyes. Just don't think too hard about it Stiles, just jump. I fell and hit the ground roughly before pitching forward onto my face.
"Ouch." I muttered under my breath. I stood carefully. My legs tingled, but no pain at all. Awesome. I quickly moved through the dark heading to the nearest bus stop which, lucky for me, was right off the street at the end of the hotel. I quickly strode up to the sign. Fifteen minutes until the next shuttle arrived. The bus pulled up ten-fifteen on the dot. I boarded it and handed the driver all forty bucks.
"How far will that take me?"
"Til the end of this bus route, right to the town of Saxondale. That far enough for you?"
I nodded quickly as I shoved my money into his hands and choose a seat in the middle of the near empty bus. There was a couple a few seats ahead of me whispering quietly and on their phones. Pretty sure the guy sleeping in the back was hammered. No matter. I slouched down in my seat and pulled out my phone. Oh wait. They could track my phone as well. I factory reset it before tossing it outside the cracked bus window. Why was I trying so hard to cover my tracks? It's not like I wanted to live as a monster. Still, it would be better if my friends and father would never see me again. Even if they wanted to hunt me, I couldn't risk hurting them. I sighed, kicking the floor angrily, why did this have to happen to me? How long til I'd want human blood again? Will I always lose control and kill someone? Tears pricked my eyes again and I roughly scrubbed them away. I needed to find someone to help me. Another vampire? Or perhaps a hunter who could get rid of me for good.
I slid my feet under my seat and they hit something. I pulled it up. A map of the United States. Considering everything maybe this was my answer to running. Picking a random town would mean that no one could use my own logic to predict where I was going. I unfolded the map and closed my eyes. I lifted my right hand into a pointer finger and prayed to whatever god was out there that this town would hold the answers to my problems. I shoved my finger randomly and opened my eyes. The state of Georgia, well, that was a long way from California. I looked under my finger to the small-town dot it landed on. Mystic Falls. Interesting name. It was almost ominous. Who was I kidding? I'm overthinking again. Mystic Falls here I come. How I was going to get there was a question for another day. I watched the only life I had known fade into the darkness behind the bus's taillights.
