Ernesto sits on the hard ground. He's back in prison. Security caught him when he was halfway to his mansion. They'd told him if they ever caught him outside his mansion, then he'd be sent to jail again.
That's where he is now. But this time he doesn't care. He's just angry. At the concert audience for showing up and listening. At the security guards, who wrestled him down and hauled him to jail.
Mostly, though, he's mad att Héctor for picking that song to sing at the concert. He'd promised that that song would be theirs and only theirs.
Ernesto should've known he wasn't gonna keep that promise.
Once Ernesto is against Héctor, it's like those things never mattered. Promises. Conversations. Past concerts they did. It all seemed to mean nothing.
Ernesto buried his face in his hands. He heard someone walk past him and he snarled. "Go away."
"Superhero?"
Ernesto looked up.
Héctor stood on the other side of the cell, just like he'd done the first time. He was srill wearing the suit he'd worn for the concert. "Superhero, just listen." he pleaded.
Ernesto turns away. "Don't call me that." he mutters.
Héctor sits down.
Ernesto sighs, annoyed. "Shouldn't you still be performing?" he asked.
Héctor shook his head. "I decided to come here," he says, "to talk to you."
"You're fans will be mad," Ernesto commented.
Héctor leans on the door. "I don't care." he replied. "I still have mi familia to play for. And besides, it's not the same without you."
Ernesto stares at him. "Who cares?" he growls.
"I do." Héctor answers. "You may not like me anymore, but I will always stay by you." Héctor stares deep into Ernesto's eyes. "No one deserves to be alone."
The last sentence strikes something within Ernesto, and he closes his eyes.
That's what he'd told Héctor after someone had picked on him (again). Ernesto had sat down with Héctor and explained that one person's opinion doesn't affect everyone elses.
Ernesto had said, "All you need is one amigo."
No one deserves to be alone.
Despite how much he doesn't want to, Ernesto leans against the cell door and lets the tears fall. He feels Héctor reach into the cell and squeeze his hand. Ernesto sobs quietly. The rest of the world fades away.
After a few minutes, Ernesto opens his eyes and looks at Héctor. His only friend. His concert partner. The most vivid immagination ever. The most caring personality.
"Superhero."
For once Ernesto doesn't mind the name.
Héctor sits there with his amigo, holding his hand gently. He can't remember the last time they'd done this, just sat together, not a care in the world.
"Superhero." he whispers. He half expects Ernesto to yell at him, but all remains silent. He doesn't mind.
A lot of time passes before Héctor stands up, looking down at Ernesto.
"I have to go," he whispers. "I'll see you tomorrow."
Ernesto groans in reply, but he seems tired more than angry.
Héctor turns away, holding back tears.
He opens the door to the hacienda. Imelda stares at him knowingly.
Héctor hopes he doesn't look too sad.
In the bedroom, Héctor walks to the side window. Ernesto's mansion stands in the distance. An exciting view. A distraction. Héctor places his hand on the window, overlooking the sight.
Then he starts to sing.
Everyda-ay, all we wanna have is fun, fun fun.
Fun anywa-ay, so just come and join us one by one.
Héctor sighs, falling down onto his bed.
A couple seconds later, he hears footsteps.
"Héctor?"
He doesn't answer. He sees Imelda sit next to him.
"Mi amor, why did you do that?"
"I had to go with him." Héctor says, "I miss him."
Imelda doesn't say anything else as they sit there on the bed, gazing at the majestic opulence ahead.
The next day, Ernesto feels a bit better as he gazes out the window of his cell. He hears laughter in his head, but he doesn't mind.
For once, he cherishes it.
He paces around, high energy. He slept a lot better despite all that's happened. At one point, he turns to the cell window again.
He hears footsteps and a thud as he turns back around.
He peers at the package left for him. Fits it in between the bars and opens it.
A superhero toy and five candy bars.
He savors their taste as he looks at his mansion again.
