Puff Life

Sirius frowned as he listened to the hat that had been placed on the top of his head. His mother had insisted heavily that he ask to be a Slytherin, and that's what he planned to tell her when she asked. However, he had already made his mind up over his house placement. He wanted to be in the best house in all of Hogwarts history.

Slytherin wasn't that house.

His chosen house was a much happier place. Plus, Sirius looked amazing in yellow. It really bright out the colour of his eyes and hair. He looked fantastic in yellow, though he couldn't deny all colours looked wonderful on him.

He rocked the colour yellow most of all though.

Finally the hat let out a mental sigh, clearly realising that Sirius was too stubborn to change his mind. Sirius liked to think that the hat also made the choice because there was no Slytherin to be found inside of him. Because that would really suck!

"Hufflepuff."

...oOo...

The boys he met on the train clearly loved yellow too because it didn't take long for the hat to call out the superior house when sorting them. He was a little surprised since James had expressed his desire to be a Gryffindor.

Sirius beamed at James, Remus and Peter, delighted at the idea of having the three as friends for the next few years. It was clear that he was their leader and they couldn't live without him. After all, James had switched his house choice.

James laughed when Sirius relayed this information back to them. Remus cracked a smile and Peter just looked worried. Sirius crossed his arms, annoyed that they weren't taking him seriously. It was no way to treat a leader and clearly James was trying to steal that role for himself already. Sirius would deal with him later!

...oOo...

The beds were perfect. Yellow and black and Sirius felt like a bumblebee when wrapped up in the blankets that covered the beds. He took the second from the end, glaring at Peter who took the one furthest away, looking at Sirius somewhat cautiously as though Sirius was unbalanced. It wasn't any of Peter's business in regards to how balanced Sirius was. Friends were supposed to overlook that stuff. He watched Peter until Peter drew the curtains around the bed, choosing to hide away.

He turned his attention to James and Remus who were both sorting their belongings on the beds either side of him. That was fine. They looked like they were more up for a chat than Peter was anyway. He just had to decide who would be his best friend. Both of them were perfect for the role. He'd probably have to set some challenges before picking, though whoever didn't win would get stuck with Peter as a best friend. He didn't want to subject either of them to that fate, so quickly made the choice that he'd have two best friends instead of one.

"As your leader, i suggest we spend our first night breaking into the kitchens,: Sirius insisted.

James and Remus looked at him, already eager, and Sirius grinned as Peter quickly opened his curtains, his caution gone at the idea of getting more food. Clearly they were starting to realise that he was perfect leader material. All he had to do was keep making choices like this.

"I made you something," Sirius said, offering a yellow package to Remus.

Remus looked at it doubtfully. Sirius usually wrapped chocolate cake which caused it to get battered and broken. Remus didn't approve of broken up cake. Sirius had learnt a lot of things weren't suitable for wrapping in the five years they had shared the dorm room.

Remus reached for it anyway and opened the paper, his eyes widening at the sight of the scarf. Sirius figured nervously. He had made the scarf by hand, after learning to knit from Dorea. He quickly informed Remus of this, hoping that Remus realised the effort Sirius put in - that Sirius actually sat down for weeks and worked on the scarf. Sirius could barely sit still for a whole lesson, so it proved his dedication.

Remus fingers stroked over the material for a long time as he examined it, taking way too long in Sirius' opinion - he felt that Remus should have said something by now - perhaps declared his love and devotion, which was the ideal response.

Finally Sirius snatched the scarf, winding the scarf around Remus neck and looked at him expectantly. He was scared. He worked harder on that then he did on anything. It made Remus look like a cosy bumblebee which was the perfect look for the love of his life. It matched the mustard-yellow cardigan Sirius had given him for his birthday. Perhaps not 'Hufflepuff' yellow, but a shade that suited Remus perfectly.

Sirius raised his eyebrows as Remus met his gaze. "Well?" he demanded. "What do you think?"

Remus lips curved into a smile and he moved closer to Sirius. There was inches between their faces and Remus' lips parted to thank Sirius.

As impulsive as he was, Sirius couldn't stop himself. He may never have another chance. He leaned up and pressed his lips against Remus'.

They stayed like that for a long moment and Sirius began to internally panic. This wasn't as he imagined. In his dreams, Remus kissed back. He wasn't kissing back which was always a bad sign... or so he had heard when asking the older Hufflepuffs for advice.

He started to pull away but suddenly Remus' hands were around him, clutching at his clothes. He was being pulled closer and Remus fingers were tangled in his hair.

This was how he had dreamt the kiss to go -and it didn't disappoint.
