I don't own Suzanne Collin's The Hunger Games characters.
This is going to the first of the homecoming chapters. Like in Finnick's Party chapters, I am going to incorporate different characters POV in this one chapter. I am getting a new laptop in a few days, so I am really happy because I will be able to write these chapters without my laptop glitching.
Chapter 21:
Clove's POV
I am at Madge's house, and she is bustling around, trying to get Johanna and me to step into our dresses. Annie is already in her dress and she has her makeup and hair done. She is braiding Katniss's hair up into a bun now. She had pulled mine into a half-up bun twenty minutes ago and Madge had straightened the remainder of my hair. Johanna refused to let anyone touch her shoulder-length hair, but Madge managed to get a smoky eyeshadow, mascara, and some foundation. All she was able to get on me was moisturizer and a bit of mascara. Madge herself is wearing a long silver dress with matching heels and a full face of makeup. All she did for her eyes was a bit of silver eyeliner. Somehow, she is able to pull it off.
When Johanna comes out of Madge's guest room in her dress, I go in after her and reluctantly put mine on. I have just finished zipping up the back of the dress and am about to put my small heels when my phone vibrates beside me. It is a new one that Cato insisted on buying me, despite my protesting. I pick it up and immediately accept the facetime request when I see who it is from. After a brief moment, the face of a woman in the early forties appears on my screen. I feel tears pricking at my eyes and I blink hard to keep them at bay.
"Hi Clove," my mother's voice shakes as she says it.
"Hello," Is all I manage.
"Can I see the dress?" My mom asks.
I walk to the full body mirror that hangs on the door and I flip the camera. My mom gasps when she sees the dress and I flip the camera back to my face with a small smile reaching my lips.
"You look gorgeous!" She says beaming.
"Thanks, mom."
Madge knocks on the door.
"You almost ready Clove?" She calls through the door. "We need to leave soon."
"I got to go mom, but can I call you after?" I ask hopefully.
"Of course you can," She smiles sadly at me before we hang up.
I walk out of the guest room and Madge walks me down the stairs to where the rest of the girls are standing. Madge whispers that I look amazing, but I kind of ignore it, along with the awed stares of the other girls. Madge gives us all a secretive smile before opening the door. When we walk down to her driveway, I see a long black limousine parked on the side of the road.
"Did you get this?" I ask.
"No," Madge says. "The boys did."
We all turn to her in surprise.
"What do you mean the boys?" Katniss asks accusingly. "I thought that we were just going as a girls group."
"We were. Gale and I put it together this morning, kind of last minute," Madge says.
"Gale?" Annie says surprised.
"Yeah, he asked me to the dance after we picked out your guys' dresses. And I said yes."
Annie, like me, doesn't seem to be to bothered by it, but Katniss looks, to say the least, pissed.
"Who?" Johanna asks when we reach the limo.
"Gale, Finnick, Cato, Marvel, and Peeta," Madge replies as she opens the door. Katniss heaves a sigh and stands back, obviously hoping to get out of getting into the limo. I go in first and immediately sit in the far corner. Cato, being his wonderful self, sat on the seat nearest to the door and farthest from the driver. He scoots over so I can sit only next to him. I have barely sat in the seat when his lips are at my ear, but his body is positioned a little awkwardly around his broken arm.
"You look stunning," He gently kisses right under my ear after he says it.
"Ugh, could you be more disgusting." I turn my head sharply when I hear her voice. I hadn't noticed her when I got in, but Glimmer is seating next to the driver in the front of the car. I can see a pink skinny strap, but I can't see the rest of her face. Her blonde hair is curled in delicate spirals and she would almost look nice if it wasn't for the look of disdain on her face.
"No one said she would be here," Johanna snarls.
Glimmer just glares back at Johanna, and then at me and Cato, before rolling up the window that separates the front of the limo from us.
The drive to the school is uncomfortable. Marvel is next to Cato and Johanna sits next to him. Next to her is Katniss, then Peeta, then Finnick and Annie. Peeta keeps sneaking little glances at Katniss, but she keeps her gaze fixed on any point in the car that isn't him. Marvel and Johanna look surprisingly comfortable next to each other. Finnick and Annie aren't looking at each other, but Annie is leaning just slightly towards him. Her hand has healed by now and I notice Finnick's fingers lightly tracing the scar from her surgery. Ever since Johanna and I found out that they have been secretly dating, I am noticing all of the little things that they do.
Marvel's POV
It takes forever for us to reach the school and when we finally do, Johanna and I are the first ones out of the limo. Immediately we sneak off into an empty classroom. She grabs me roughly by the tie and kisses me furiously.
"You look hot," I manage to get through the kisses.
"Just shut up and kiss me," She says before smashing her mouth against mine again, but I pull away immediately.
"Why do you keep doing this?" I aks, thinking to all of the times that Johanna has told me to just shut up when I talk when we are kissing.
She shoves me away and I see the anger on her face. She is honestly kind of scary when she gets mad.
"What?" She growls.
"Why do you push me away anytime that I try to tell you something?" I feel my own voice rising in anger now.
"Because I don't care about your stupid words. This," She gestures between us. "doesn't mean anything. This-"
I cut her off. "What is this to you? 'Cause I actually care about you. I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't."
Johanna scoffs when I say it and rolls her eyes.
"You don't care about me! You don't know me!" She yells. She paces back and forth for a moment before turning to me again. "You know what? This is over! It is more work than it is worth." She makes to stalk out of the room but stops for a moment. I turn and see that Clove, Cato, Gale, Finnick, and Annie are all standing in the doorway in shock. Johanna gives me another death glare and pushes through them and out of the room. I make to follow her, but Clove pushes me back.
"Don't," Clove says before turning, no doubt to go and find Johanna. Cato gives me a pitied look and then follows Clove.
I smack my hand against the desk, cursing myself for ruining whatever we did have. I should have just stayed quiet. I should have known that saying something would have just ruined everything. Johanna is such a feisty person and our sporadic makeout sessions were the only time that I could actually spend time with her. Though she is right. I don't actually know her that well. All that I know is that every time I see her, my stomach flips and I can't take my eyes off her. And now I have screwed it all up.
Finnick's POV:
Annie and I stand there in shock, wondering what has just happened. We stand there for a moment but then I feel Annie's hand dragging me away gently.
"Why didn't you tell me you were coming?" Annie asks.
"I didn't know. They literally just came to my house and picked me up," I say.
Annie gives me a little glare that I know is meant to be her glowering at me, but it just looks adorable. And I say it. Annie hits me lightly in the arm and I take her hand before it can move away.
"You suck a being intimidating," I tease her.
"I do not," She rebukes.
"You really do. It is like a puppy is angry at me," I say with a smile.
She rolls her eyes.
"I don't like you," She says.
"Oh, you love me."
"You're right. I do love you," She kisses me gently and I pick her up off the ground, bringing her closer to me. When we pull away, Annie glances around, obviously checking to see if anyone saw. I can't help but feel exasperated, even though I know that I was the one who originally asked to keep our relationship secret.
"I don't care," I say. "I don't care if people see. I don't want to keep us a secret anymore."
"What about all of those poor high school girls you will be disappointing?" She asks. Though her voice sounds teasing, I can tell that deep down, she is worried about what will happen.
"I love you," I say. "And I am so tired of worrying about if people are watching. I just want to kiss you and not care."
A group of kids walks out of the cafeteria, where homecoming is being held. I see that Glimmer is among them. Perfect. Just as Glimmer and her followers look our way, I grasp Annie's face in my hands and kiss her, turning her head so that it is obvious to anyone that I am kissing her. Our foreheads are laying against each other and Annie is gasping slightly for breath. Her eyes dart slightly to the side and I can tell that she sees the group. She kisses me gently again.
"You'll protect me?" She whispers.
"Of course," I reply.
I take her hand in mine, and we walk to the cafeteria, hand in hand. I push the doors open and easily spot Cato's tall, strong form in the crowd and we begin to make our way towards them. A bunch of girls turn and stare as we pass them, and I hear them begin to whisper. Annie presses her body closer to me and I give her hand a gentle squeeze. When we reach the table, Johanna is sitting a the far end glowering, Clove is sitting down and Cato has now joined her, his uninjured arm resting lazily around her shoulders. I scan the crowd for a moment and see that Gale and Madge are dancing, as are Peeta and a rather reluctant Katniss.
When Clove sees our clasped hands, she just rolls her eyes and smiles a bit and Johanna just looks bored and annoyed. When Cato sees us, he looks rather taken aback, but there is also a look of understanding in his eyes.
"How long have you two been a thing?" He asks.
"Almost two months," Annie says.
Cato's jaw drops now and he looks to Clove and Johanna, expecting for them to have the same reaction.
"We already knew," Clove says, patting Cato gently on the shoulder. He winces slightly and she kisses him an apology. While Clove and Cato's relationship makes a lot of sense to me, I never expected them to be so touchy-feely, mostly because of how severe Clove can be most of the time. Something about Cato just seems to make Clove melt into a puddle. It is rather adorable to watch, but I know that Clove would hit me if she knew that.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see Glimmer walking towards our table. Oh crap, I think when I see the look on her face. This is not going to end well.
Sorry to leave you all on a cliff-hanger, but I just kind of had to. What drama do you think Glimmer is going to cause now?
Honestly, I kind of feel a little bad for making Glimmer's character such a b***h because I don't totally hate her character, so I might make her character a little nicer. Let me know if you think I should do a kinder side of Glimmer or not. I am not sure.
Stay happy, healthy, and safe,
-Jewel.
