A Family Tradition

Hope Lupin sat at the dining table, a cup of tea warming her hands as she waited for the timer to finish. Her lips wrapped around the lyrics of Maggie May between sips of the warm drink that comforted her in the midst of her son's absence.

Remus had never left home before. His fear of venturing too far from the house had started with his bite days before his fifth birthday, escalating in the years that followed. She knew he'd be feeling the absence of her, just as much as she was.

But she also knew that she had to allow him to grow up, and in doing so, he'd need to leave home and experience a normal life—one as normal as it was possible to be. Remus would never be like everyone else. She had the scratch marks down her stomach reminding her of that fact. Not that Remus would ever find out what happened during his first transformation - she had forced her way past her husband at the sound of her son's pain during that first time. Lyall hadn't been quick enough to pull her away from the small wolf that was taking over.

Her letter sat on the table, ready to send. A book she found in the charity shop sat next to it, and Hope's gaze shifted over the dirty bowls that needed washing. She hated leaving things dirty, but it would be dinner time soon. There was also no point in washing up twice.

The song ended, Diana Ross' strong voice filled the room and brought a smile back to Hope's lips. Moments later the small timer buzzed, and she set down her cup and stood up, the chair scraping on the floor.

She reached up, pulling her wavy blonde hair into a messy bun, fastening it with a hairband from her pocket, before reaching for the red oven-gloves, slipping her hands inside. She turned the oven off and quickly took out the trays.

Her two trays of cookies had too many chocolate chips in them, but she couldn't deny Remus anything, so if extra chocolate made him happy, so be it. She set them on the cooling stand she had already laid out.

She ran the tap, filling the sink with water and some washing up liquid, before turning her attention back to her cookies. She began to put them into a container, ready to send to Remus the next morning. He had mentioned three roommates and she hoped they were enough to share.

...oOo...

Remus stared at the mess that was cookie dough. His mother had made it sound so simple on the phone. She had given him the simplest recipe she could, but the cookies tasted horrible, and the chocolate chips had gone missing.

Well, Remus had sampled some of them. But only a few.

He flicked his wand, cleaning the room in a moment, but the sight of a clean room didn't stop him feeling like he had failed. He needed to be able to do this for his son.

His father had told stories about when he went to Hogwarts as a child, how the cookies his parents sent had been a reminder of home and had helped him feel a little less homesick. His mother had clearly remembered those stories because she had sent a container of cookies every week without fail.

Now it was his turn. Teddy had just gone away to Hogwarts, which meant that Remus would carry on the tradition of sending him cookies.

Yet he had tried until the ingredients were gone, and still failed.

Sirius found Remus half an hour later, sitting dejected at the dining table, a cup of tea cooling in front of him. He placed the shopping bags on the table, silently took the tea and set about making a new cup.

"How about we make the next batch together?" Sirius said, as he set down the two cups of hot tea.

...oOo...

Teddy reached for the packets of cookies on the supermarket shelf and considered them.

"No, they must be handmade," Victoire insisted, taking them from his hands and putting them back. "It's tradition, my love."

Teddy nodded. "Not enough chocolate in those anyway," he said. "So… how do we make cookies?"
