The Old Way

Based on the movie: Onwards

Magic was the way things used to be done, until their world advanced with technology. The arrival of a magical staff proves to both Sirius and Regulus that magic still exists after all. Onwards!AU. Mention of Wolfstar.

Sirius reaches for the magical staff. A gift from Uncle Alphard, obviously. There doesn't need to be a note with the name, he just knows.

Only Alphard would own something so old and mysterious. Something so linked to the old days where magic existed and people used spells for light rather than electricity.

James is going to be so jealous that he has this staff and James doesn't. Maybe he can use it for cosplay when they play Marauders and Monsters again?

"I need to call Remus," he says, grabbing his Marauders and Monsters book. Maybe it's role-play these days - but these are real spells, and this is a real staff.

"Expecto Patronum," he says excitedly. Nothing happens. No light. No shimmer. Not even a single spark. He's used this spell so many times when playing M&M, and can't help but feel disappointed. He tries again and a third time.

"Face it, there's no magic left in the world," Regulus laughs from the bed behind him. Sirius had forgotten his brother was there in his attempts to get this staff to work.

"I'm just tired," Sirius complains, reaching up to tuck a curl behind a long ear. "I only slept for four hours last night."

"You're an elf. We don't sleep, we trance," Regulus points out, causing Sirius to glare at him.

"Fine. I'll try again tomorrow." he drops the staff onto the bed and it rolls down, hitting Regulus' hand.

Sparks fly from it and Regulus pulls back, his eyes widening. Sirius beams. Proof.

"It's just because I'm not a spell-caster," he says, realising. "I must be a rogue or a bard or something. You… you can cast spells. Why don't you cast a spell and summon Remus?"

"You want me to do magic?" Regulus asks, sounding a little in awe now. Sirius nods, a little smugly. After all, Regulus has taken the piss out of him so many times for believing magic could still exist. Regulus has laughed, Regulus has pretended not to know him when his friends are around.

It hurts, but now the truth is here and Regulus can't deny anything.

"Wait. You want me to do my first bit of magic and use it to summon your boyfriend?"

Sirius nods again. "Call Remus," he demands.

"You're a prat," Regulus murmurs with a sigh. "Fine. What.., what do I say?"

"Expecto Patronum," Sirius insists, glancing at the book again though he knows all of the spells off by heart. He'll find out his ability later now he has proof that this really is their history. "Your patronus will appear and you give it a message and tell it who to go to."

Regulus says the words and a lion appears, a bright beast that paces as it waits.

"Remus… Remus Lupin," Regulus says. "Your boyfriend is a moron, can you get him out of my bedroom. Please. I'll pay you." He turns his gaze to Sirius."Happy?"

He is. Not with the message, but with the proof that magic still exists. He pats Regulus on the shoulder proudly. The first person to use magic in so many years. His brother is something special, and it won't be long before Regulus shows the world, and they can bring magic and the old ways back.
