The smell of the ocean never seemed to bother her, not until that smell turned into the remembrance of how far she was from home. Its been four years since she's left Seoul, and Busan soon became her new residency. Moving in with her mothers family had been a real step out of comfort zone, but a necessary one.
With busan being so close to the sea, Ha Ni had various opportunities to learn how to swim with her cousins, and go fishing things she never got to do back in Seoul. However, most days she helps out her aunt in her flower shop. This is where she discovered her passion for floristry. She loved that all the different flowers had meanings not only by the type but also color, or how arrangements also could convey messages that words alone could not. Important messages that she could help deliver, it brought inexplicable joy into her life.
That's how she discovered her new dream, opening up her own flower shop. And it's within reach, after countless hours of hard work, sweat, and tears, she finally had enough money to open up her own business, the only down part was there was no vacancy for a shop anywhere, within her price range. Well, not exactly, there was one but it was in Seoul. Ironic ain't it?
That would mean seeing him again. She won't lie and say she forgot about him, that would be unfair to herself. She sometimes let herself wonder if he ever thought about her, even for just a moment when he sits by his window staring out at the city lights. She bets he's still up around this time in the wee time of two in the morning of course he would be, he's a hard worker like that.
She heard that he took over his dad's company a while back, and it's thriving under his leadership. She couldn't help the small spark of pride that ignited within her at the news, she knew that he would do great things. It's moments like that when it takes everything in herself not to call him, to run back into his arms, she hopes that he knows that everytime she doesn't, she's so close to doing it.
When she left, she was surprised at how many missing calls she had from all her loved ones, the only one who didn't call was the one she wanted to hear from the most. Ha ni made it one week before thinking of coming back home, yet something stopped her. Her angel Baek Min-jun, an accident but a blessing in disguise.
Telling her father was one of the hardest moments in her life, but her dad only cried and hugged her. He encouraged her to stay with her mother's family for the time being as he figured out the next steps for his daughter and grandchild. Ha ni was in a mix of emotions ranging all over the spectrum. She was terrified at being a single mother, but overjoyed at having a piece of Seung jo with her. And boy, her baby boy was the spitting image of his daddy. It was made incredibly clear as he grew that it was all Seung jo's boy, but had the temperament of his mother. Everyone who met lil Min Jun was automatically wrapped around his little finger.
It was made apparent that he inherited his fathers intelligence as he got to reading and writing very quickly. Oh ha ni was the proudest mommy in all Busan, boasting about her son to all her costumers who would listen. But with all that brain, came all the killer questions like where do baby's come from, when you sleep where do you go, or can we get a puppy. The most hard hitting question will always be where's my daddy? Ha ni's heart breaks each time her baby asks about his father and she can't give a good answer to, only that his daddy is on an important mission and he'd come back to him and mommy very soon. She really wanted Seung Jo to meet his son, each time that she wanted to call him about it she chickened out and days turned into years and here she was. The woman knew Seung jo had a right to know about his son, that his parents had every right to know their grandchild, she was just scared Seung jo would reject Min Jun and break his little heart, fear was always holding her back. Ha ni wanted Min Jun to have a father figure, so she started dating in hopes of finding the perfect man (or the closest she could get) for her family. Each time she thought she might have going a decent guy, Min Jun rejected them. Each and everyone of them. They weren't his daddy, and now she was labeled a cheater by her own son. That brat, she changed his diapers !
Regardless, Ha Ni wanted what was best for her and her sons future, and right now meant moving to Seoul. There was a hopeful seed in her heart that everything was going to work out, but she had to keep her feet on the ground when someone else depends on her.
She stared out the window out onto the sea full of ships . Wondering how they can be sailing in the dark only guided by a dim light and nothing else. Those seas full of uncertainty and despair. Maybe that's all they'll ever be. Keep passing each other by, and maybe that's how it's supposed to be.
They're only ships in the night.
