"Baek Min Jun hold mommy's hand," she chastised her four year old as she locked up her apartment. It's been a week since she's been back in Seoul and luckily the move wasn't such a hassle to the pair. Her apartment wasn't big or luxurious, but it was suitable for a child and manageable for the young mother. So that's all she could ask for.
Walking though the familiar streets of Seoul made Ha Ni's heart feel lighter. She thanked heaven up above that it was only a short five minute walk to her father's restaurant as surely if it were longer she would have witnessed a tantrum from her irritable son. He wasn't really one for early mornings, and had made it clear on several occasions. She didn't have any other choice than to be up at early dawn to drop her son at her father's as she needed to open up the flower shop early as she had new shipment of flowers coming in today. Being as she was the only one working, she couldn't give Min Jun the attention he needed. As her father was the boss, he could take care of Min Jun efficiently. She promised Ki-Dong that it was only temporarily as she looked for daycares within her budget. He simply would assure her that he loved watching over his grandson, that he was the establishments star.
"Good morning daddy," the young woman greeted to her father who was preparing to open for the day.
"Good morning daughter, and to you too champ," he replied joyously to the two. Min Jun rubbed his eyes trying to clear the sleep out of his eyes when he noticed his grandpa was near. He quickly let go of Ha Ni's hand and ran to his grandpa putting his hands up giving him the eyes when he wanted up. The young girl clenched her hand over her heart at the endearing sight.
"Have you had breakfast yet, let me make you something real quick," her father said in concern for his daughters health, being a single mother she tended to skip meals unintentionally. She sighed as she checked her watch, deciding she couldn't waste anymore time.
"I'm sorry papa I wish I could, but I'm already running behind," she replied apologetically," everything you need is in the bag, remember Min Jun has to have his nap around ten and his lunch at twelve and if he cries-"
"Give him his blanky, I know Ha Ni. Don't worry too much, I may be old but I can handle it," he assured her as he carried Min Jun while escorting her out the door.
"If you say so,but if anything happens call me immediately," to which he agreed to readily, already used to the same speech," mommy is leaving Min Jun! Can I get a kiss," she asked while poking her left cheek to the adorable toddler.
Min Jun leaned over to his mother and planted a big sloppy kiss on her cheek and gave her a smile. "Mommy loves you, be good to your grandpa!" And with that she was off.
Mornings were usually destructive and busy as her new business was flourishing, but she soon got the hang of things and could relax while she made preparations for the day.
She received various flowers that morning including amaranthus, baby's breath, dahlia's, and Zinnia's just to name a few. Ha Ni felt her heart beat mysteriously at the sight of these, as she believed that flowers can predict your fate. She laughed at herself for being so silly, and quickly got to work.
Running a flower shop in Seoul proved to pay off rather quickly as she seemed to be making orders by the bulk, keeping herself busy most of the day. Being a rather populated city have her opportunities that busan could not. Even though she had barely started, she had hired a helping hand as a Delivery person.
Checking her planner, she could only sigh as she seemed to have an event she needed to cater at. Some big shot requested various flowers for an anniversary celebration, and wanted them as fresh as possible so she had to carry her butt all the way to the center of Seoul, she had to oversee that the flowers are perfectly arranged and stay an extra fifteen minutes for just in case scenarios. Not only that, but they ordered a bunch of rose petals to be scattered once the couple come in. So that means having to dress as a party guest so she doesn't stand out too much while waiting . This was going to be a long day.
The dark haired girl was getting ready at her apartment after checking up with her dad who reassured her that they were both fine and to go have fun. She hurried to take a quick shower being curling her long black hair and brushing her bangs into place. She decided on a a bright youthful makeup look finishing it off with pink cheeks and ombré red lips. Smiling at herself mirror, she feels the prettiest she has in a while. She needs to do this more often she thinks to herself. Deciding on a black sweetheart line dress with cute straps that tied like bows that reached above her knees, she finally finished getting ready.
Checking the time, she let out a gasp as she searched for her clutch with all her belongings inside already. Making it out the door, she still had fifteen minutes to head back to the shop to ride over with Kim Namjoon
(Her delivery boy) to Pandai corp with hopefully a few min to spare. With that in mind she set off on to her journey.
"I can't believe we had to dress up like idiots to cater a party for a person we don't even know," complained the young man trying to stretch the collar of his dress shirt to get a little breathing room. Ha Ni could only snort at the boys complaining, he wasn't the one wearing heels.
"Either way," he continued, "I hope the family at least tips us, they have enough money to get this many flowers! They must be loaded!"
"Kim Namjoon," she exclaimed in disappointment at his shameful behavior.
"Calm down Ha Ni I was just kidding," he chided," besides it's just hopeful thinking, nothing wrong with that."
Ha Ni could only shake her head at his idiocy, wondering how they could be related. That's right, her cousin from busan came looking for a job and Ha Ni could provide one for him. He had the nerve to ask for a place to stay, he was lucky that her father still had the rooms upstairs of the restaurant that where he's moved into.
"Yeah yeah, just be on your best behavior. Don't go picking a fight okay," she said as they were quickly approaching the building. He just waved off her worries, which was the closest to his agreement.
Once they were in front of the building, they were helped out by the assistant of the CEO of the company with her orders of where to take them and how they wanted them to setup and with that they were escorted up. Entering the building, Ha Ni let out a gasp at how spacious the room was even though it was one where they held meetings. She could hear her cousin just let out a low whistle at the space.
"Okay," she said cheerfully,"its time to work our magic! Let's do our best! Fighting!" She put her fist in the air in excitement which was mirrored by the boy with less enthusiasm. See, how they worked was Namjoon was all the brawn while Ha Ni was ,ironically, the brains. No matter how much he complained he couldn't help but give her props at how amazing her works turned out to be from the arrangements to the placements of them.
The party was aimed to start at eight o clock sharp, so they had a few more minutes before the guests arrived. They weren't the only caterers working against time, as the food people, and party planners were also fighting against the clock. With this in mind, they managed to pull through and finish just in time.
They decided to mingle through themselves as people started to come in at once. Ha Ni lost Namjoon five minutes into the party, probably at the food table wondering how much he could stuff in his pocket without getting caught. Looking around she noticed it was a very formal event, most invitees probably were company associates. The personal assistant came towards Ha Ni again letting her know that former CEO and his wife were about to come in and to get ready for the petal release. Managing Namjoon just in time, she dragged him to his spot and wondered towards her own both opposite sides of the grand doors with just enough room to not get hit. Keeping an eye on the doors, she started to count down in her mind. Three..two.. one.. let go!
With the door opening, a beautiful rain of rose petals showered onto the couple of the hour. Red sweeping everyone's eyesite with the beautiful flowers surrounding the guests. Ha Ni smiled at the site, a beautiful metaphor of forever love.
"Welcome the couple of honor of our very own pandai, Mr and Mrs Baek," announced over the speakers making Ha Ni's blood run cold. Turning to her head to the side she caught the familiar silhouettes of the people she once considered family. So if this was their party.. then ...that meant...
The woman looked up to be met with familiar eyes that she could never forget. She couldn't seem to be hearing any of the crowd anymore over the sound of her own heartbeat. Because there across the hall in the midst of all the rose petals was the only man she has ever loved. And what chilled her to the bone was that they were making direct eye contact, not either of them looking away. Strangely, she didn't want to.
"Y'all gonna bang or what," came a hoarse voice from beside her breaking Ha Ni out of her thoughts. She looked over to Namjoon simply munching on a sandwhich while eyeing the weird eye contact his cousin had going on.
She spluttered for a while before looking back to see Seung jo trying to get through the crowd... to get to her. Her heart started beating like crazy, seemed like it would jump out of her chest. And that made her want to run. That's when her fight or flight senses kicked in. She couldn't do confrontation, not now!
Maybe later, she reasoned to herself as she grabbed Namjoon wrist making him drop his sandwhich to which he immediately started complaining.
"Don't be a baby, I'll buy you a new one but we have to go! Now," she exclaimed over the noise in urgency as she kept looking back to see how close Seung Jo was to getting to them. When she noticed he was more than halfway through the crowd, she booked it with Namjoon somehow keeping up.
By the time Seung Jo made it outside the building they were long gone.
The car ride back to the noodle shop was a little awkward to say the least. Ha Ni had her head against the window while drawing little doodles on the foggy windows, while her cousin was just staring out onto the road. He coughed trying to make a little noise to try to get her attention, which failed as she kept doodling.
"So..." he started off,"that was weird." She decided to ignore him and continued to stare out the window.
"Did you two know eachother, one night stand, cause let me tell ya I've had some of those and boy the tension is crazy," he began trying to cut the tension in the car with a little humor.
"Or what, is he your baby daddy," he joked but the quick jump and swerve of the head Ha Ni gave him was unmistakeable.
That's when Namjoon lost it. "Oh my god! He's your baby daddy," he said through fits of laughter trying his best not to swerve into other lanes.
Ha Ni could feel herself turn to an embarrassing shade of red," shut up and mind your business," she muttered through the embarrassment.
After what seemed like ages, Namjoon managed to calm down. "So what happened, you seemed pretty scared back there," he asked with concern," did that asshole leave you? Want me to rock his shit, cause I don't mind going to jail but you're gonna have to work harder to bail me out because I'm too pretty to-"
"He didn't break up with me," she cut off his ridiculous rant,"I moved away and never called back." She admitted in a whisper while looking back out the window with a pensive look on her face that his cousin had never seen on her before.
"Does he know," he muttered softly. His question was left in the air for a bit before she hook her head softly.
"No," she admitted rather guiltily as she looked down to play with her hands the rest of the car ride was filled with silence.
Walking into the empty restaurant always felt nostalgic to her. Reminded her of her teen days when her and her friends would hang out after school. The relaxing good old days.
"Thank you so much daddy," she said while taking her sons hand and loading his day bag on her shoulder.
Her father reassured her that it was his pleasure before urging her to go home to get much needed rest. Before she could walk outside, Min Jun announced he forgot his blanky and urged his grandpa to go with him to get it upstairs, she decided to go outside and wait for the pair to come out. As she walked out she bumped into something hard, stepping back rubbing her head she identified the thing was actually a persons chest.
She immediately began to bow in apology,"I'm so sorry I wasn't looking wher-" she looked up to meet the eyes that she had just ran away from literally not even an hour ago.
"It was you," he breathed out in bewilderment, "Oh Ha Ni."
Ha Ni felt her mouth open and close repeatedly trying with all her might to form a coherent sentence without letting her heart leap out of her throat. "What are you doing here," she finally got out.
What surprised her was the arms that wrapped around her bringing her to his chest. She gasped, he was embracing her! In public?! She prayed that he couldn't feel how crazy her heart was beating, but with how close they were she knew it was wishful thinking.
"When I saw you at the party, I thought I was being delusional, but I knew I had to find out," he admitted lowly, surprising ha Ni at his reveal.
"I- Seung jo ..."
"Okay mommy I'm ready to go," came a tiny voice behind the pair causing them to split automatically at the third party.
Baek Seung jo looked down to be met with a carbon copy of himself as a child. He couldn't look away from the boy, not even when Ha Ni let out a whimper.
"I'm sorry ha ni. I couldn't stop him, he's too fast for this old fart to catch," Ki-dong said to the shock still ha Ni looking between the father and son who were taking eachother in. Her father decided to say goodbye to her quickly, as not wanting to interfere.
With everything falling into place for him, Seung jo squatted slowly so he could be the same height as Min Jun giving him a soft smile, "Hello, my name is Baek Seung Jo. What's your name?"
Min Jun smiled brightly at the man while giggling,"My name is Baek Min Jun, I'm this many," he replied while holding four fingers up wiggling them for extra measure making the man laugh.
The boy suddenly got a pensive face as his little brain was working into over drive," hey we have the same name! Maybe we're related!" Seung jo felt his heart tighten in his chest.
"Where's your daddy," he asked in soft voice to the toddler that seemed to sadden at the question.
Min Jun looked down at his little hands trying not to cry, "mommy said that daddy was on an important mission and he'd come back to be with Min Jun and mommy soon," the little boys voice started to tremble,"but I'm scared he won't come back because he hates Min Jun."
Seung Jo looked away to meet Ha Ni's gaze in a silent question, for permission maybe. She couldn't really tell as there was so many emotions going through his eyes, but all she could do was nod.
The man took a breath as he turned to Min Jun with a soft smile once more, "Don't worry about any of that anymore Min jun daddy's here."
Little Min Jun turned from Seung Jo to Oh Ha Ni to which she nodded once more, trying to keep in a laugh at how identical their mannerisms were.
"He's your daddy Min Junnie, aren't you happy" she replied softly causing the toddler to start tearing up and wrap his little arms as much as he could around Seung jo who picked up his son.
"Daddy," he snuggled closer to his father, "where have you been! I missed you!"
The man donned the biggest smile that she'd have ever seen, "I was working hard for you Min Junnie," he made eye contact with Ha Ni, "but don't worry I'm not going anywhere son."
The walk home was just Min Jun talking Seung Jo's ear off with a usually stoic Seung jo smiling at his boy. Ha Ni was right next to them carrying Min Jun's bag lost in her own thoughts.
Soon enough they made it to Ha Ni's apartment, already outside the door. Seung jo had a sleeping Min Jun in his arms as Ha Ni opened up the door. She turned around to bow to him in a thankful manner.
"Thank you for seeing us home," reaching out to take Min Jun who stirred from his sleep. He felt his mother trying to take him from his father and began to shake his head repeatedly clinging on to his father. "Daddy don't leave!"
"Baek Min Jun behave! Daddy has to go home so he can be well rested to visit Min Junie again," ha Ni said in a soothing voice. The toddler didn't budge.
"What if daddy puts you to bed, would that be okay," Seung jo asked the pair but mostly ha Ni for permission to enter the apartment to which she reluctantly agreed to and let him in.
Ha Ni led Seung jo towards their bedroom whilst he looked around the apartment with a frown. She decided to ignore his pointed look as she reached out once more for her son and started changing him into his Pjs. She then helped the boy into bed and Seung jo came over to put the blanket higher and tucking him in.
"Goodnight papa," the boy said to his father with a sad look on his face at the thought of his father leaving. "Goodnight Min Junnie, I'll see you before you know it." And with that gave him a soft kiss on his forehead.
Ha Ni was right outside in the kitchen putting all the dishes away when Seung jo came out of the room, before she could even get a word out she was hit with a much more familiar glare from the man that she was used to.
"So you weren't going to tell me," he seethed through clenched teeth. Ha Ni gulped a little at his cold tone, it felt like a complete 180 from his calm tone for their son.
"I was going to I swear," she started to explain,"I just was planning on being more strategic. I needed more tim-"
"Time," he exclaimed before hushing his tone at the reminder of their son being in the room next door, "you had four years worth of time, that wasn't enough?"
Ha Ni reflexively looked down, fainting interest at her hands. She knew she deserved all his wrath, but that didn't mean it didn't hurt.
"And you're keeping our son in this apartment," he continued in astonishment," there's no room for him, the walls are filthy, and don't think I didn't see that sign that plumbing doesn't work at times."
"It's all I could afford right now," she whispered softly, knowing how much her son deserved to be in a better living space than this trashy apartment.
Hands were suddenly placed on both her cheeks causing her to look up, never realizing how close Seung jo had gotten. Her face flushed at the closeness as she looked into his eyes in surprise.
"Seung jo what are you doing,"
He gave her a look that stopped her mid sentence, something that she couldn't quite decipher.
"Let's get married."
