Chat Noir dropped his head to meet ladybug's eyes, she met him half way and the eyes he saw had tears swelling in them.
"I am so sorry Chat."
"What for?"
"I didn't notice how much you changed because I was too wrapped up in my own stuff," she sighed with defeat. "I haven't been a very good friend."
"Ladybug, I think we have both been guilty of not being very good friends." He quickly wrapped his arms around her shoulders pulling her close for a much needed embrace. "But it is important that I tell you what I can so we are as open as possible."
Ladybug mumbled into his chest, feeling some tears escaping, "As long as you don't give to much away, I think that's-"
*beep beep*
Their miraculous' were running out of energy and the two masked heroes were going to transform in just a few short minutes. Chat Noir was frustrated on how limited their time was to be together, and it would appear that it was not going to change any time soon.
"Chat, we are going to transform back, but I want to have this conversation with you." Ladybug withdrew from his embrace and looked around desperately. 'Should I suggest it?'
"You go that side of the chimney," Ladybug pointed in front of them. "And I'll go this side," before he had chance to move she grabbed his hand. "Promise me you won't look," she pleaded with him, he could see the emotion on her face.
Chat became lost for a moment. The eyes he was looking at intently, reminded him so much of his friend Marinette. Another person he had become distant from during his relationship with Kagami. 'Could I be so lucky?'
"Of course, M'Lady." He nodded with butterflies appearing in his stomach at the thought.
'Is this actually happening? I could actually risk it and find out who is under the mask... No, I made a promise to her and I'm going to keep it.' Chat reasoned with himself as he dropped down.
In position, they both transformed into their civilian selves and fed their Kwami. Tikki was shocked at what Marinette had proposed to Chat Noir and this was shown clearly on Tikki's small face. Ignoring the disapproving stare from the tiny red Goddess, Marinette handed her a macaron and kept her gaze to the tiles. Plagg was amused by the decision, although he wasn't going to risk teasing Adrien now. Chomping down on his beloved cheese, the Kwami simply gave his holder an approving smirk.
"Ladybug."
"Yes Chat?"
They were three feet away from each other, both as themselves, the stars above them, twinkling over the Parisian night. So close to confirming each other's identities, Chat was exercising great restraint not to have a peak.
"I know we won't have long to do this, it's really cold and I don't want you catching a bug." He smirked to himself upon hearing the snort response from his concealed partner.
"The Kitty, is most definitely feeling more like himself," Marinette chuckled, "there's the first pun I've heard for a long time." The bluenette had missed them, her smile was soft, remembering how they used to crop up at the most inappropriate and serious moments. He had always had a special way of making her smile.
Adrien smiled, "I am feeling more like the old me," he sighed, "it's been a while."
All the emotions he had pushed down were resurfacing, his smile was genuine, the butterflies flying freely in his stomach with the excitement and anticipation that consumed him.
"Ladybug, you know how I was always chasing you, and you told me there was another?"
"Yes," she grimaced.
"Well there wasn't just you."
Marinette was completely taken aback by this blunt admission by Chat Noir, maybe it's a good thing they could not see each other right now. His bluntness came as a shock and she was surprisingly hurt by this.
'Why has that bothered me?' Marinette wondered, she had always had her suspicions, but having them confirmed was different.
"Although at the time, there was only one M'Lady," he continued, "You told me there was another who had your heart."
Marinette could hear the disappointment he was reliving in his voice, she wanted to comfort him. Partly because she was getting cold, but mostly because her partner was suffering.
"I was starting to see one of my close friends as more, more than my friend." He was moving his hands absentmindedly as he spoke. "At first I didn't think she liked me very much, but then... but then I saw her in a different light."
'Please don't give yourself away Kitty...'
Marinette Shivered against the cold breeze which blew past them. "Chat, I need to change back, I might actually catch a bug otherwise."
"OK M'Lady." He sighed, disappointed once again that he felt he had lost momentum.
Marinette and Adrien once again became Ladybug and Chat Noir after giving each of their Kwami time to regain energy. They rounded the side of the chimney to face each other, both looked at each other with longing. Ladybug wanted to give him a hug of comfort, Chat Noir wished to continue his explanation.
'I guess this is goodbye for tonight.'
"Shall we find a warmer spot Chat?" Ladybug could see he wasn't finished and she longed to make it up to him, for the disappointing friend she had become. Reaching for his hand, Chat closed the distance with his and they gave each other a comforting squeeze.
'She cares, I can see it, am I getting ahead of myself?'
"Please Ladybug, I'm not ready to say goodnight yet," hope lingered on his face as he smiled halfheartedly at her. The two Parisian heroes made their way down to the streets, in hope to find a warmer, secluded spot to continue their talk.
