The next morning started off terribly for Gabby, she woke really early with a overwhelming feeling of nausea filling her body, she pulled herself out of bed and darted to the bathroom before collapsing in front of the toilet, her body expelling her stomach content until there was nothing but bile left. Exhausted and unable to move she lay down on the cold floor, trying to muster enough energy to make her way back to the bedroom. Matt found her two hours later when he woke up, her broken body curled in a ball as she sobbed quietly into her arm.
"Baby?" Matt said as he walked into the bathroom, "are you ok?"
"No, I can't stop being sick. I feel really rough Matt, my body is drained."
Picking her up and carrying her into the bedroom, he placed her down on the bed and went to get her some water. By the time he returned she was fast asleep under the covers, Matt kissing her head before heading for a shower, he'd barely turned the water on when he heard the door of the bathroom bang back open.
"Gabby?" he said looking out from behind the shower door, she'd got her head back in the toilet heaving again. Getting out and wrapping a towel round himself, he began to rub circles on her back while holding her hair back. "You ok baby?" She shook her head, he knew she was having issues with morning sickness, almost every day since they found out she was pregnant had started the same way, but this morning was by far the worst he'd seen her. "I think I'm going to take the day off" he said soothingly, "I'll call chief and tell him we won't be in."
"No Matt I'll be fine" she said firmly, "I just need to eat something light and drink some ginger ale I'll be ok honestly."
Matt didn't look convinced but wasn't willing to start the day off with an argument, he simply nodded and returned to the shower. Gabby picked herself up moving towards the sink to rinse her mouth, before heading to the kitchen and putting some toast in for herself and Setting the coffee machine up. She'd just pressed the button to start the cycle as the familiar feeling of hot bile rose up the back of her throat, before she'd even had time to register what was going to happen she'd thrown up again in the kitchen sink, looking up she spotted Matt standing watching her. "Baby your in no state to work."
"I'll be..." her words were cut off as she threw up for a second time in the sink.
"No" Matt said firmly "you won't. I'm calling the chief." He saw the look Gabby gave him as he turned to grab his phone off the charger "I'm not discussing this anymore" he said looking back at her, "go and lie down." She sighed deeply before moving towards the sofa, she knew he was right but that didn't mean she liked it. She could hear Matt talking to the chief and reassuring him that they'd be fine, it was just a rough morning and that he was sorry it was such short notice, before saying goodbye and hanging up.
"Here" he said holding out the two slices of toast she'd put in for herself, "chief said don't worry about shift, and suggested some remedies Donna found helpful when she was pregnant. I'll pop to the store later and hopefully something will help." He kissed her head gently before returning to the kitchen to do his own breakfast.
It wasn't long before Gabby was asleep again, Matt pulling the blanket over the top of her and leaving a note to say he'd gone to the store not wanting to disturb her.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
She could hear her phone ringing as she sleepily opened her eyes, pushing herself up to sitting she looked around the silent apartment. Shay's name flashing across her screen on the coffee table, alongside a note and some water she assumed Matt had put there.
"Hello" she spoke her voice croaky.
"Hey, sorry did I wake you? Chief said you aren't feeling great today?"
"Yea, don't worry about it." She said reading the note Matt had left, "morning sickness is a bitch, I'm not sure I'd be much good to you."
"Oh babe, that sounds rough. Anything I can do?"
"I think Matt's got it, he said chief gave him some ideas of what helped Donna. He's gone to the store by the looks of things." She took a sip of water to try and combat the rough feeling her throat was almost permanently left with, after several days of throwing up. "Who did chief get to ride with you?"
"Someone from floater pool, we're just waiting for her to arrive. Brett I think chief said her name was."
"You'll have to let me know how it goes." Gabby said smiling slightly, Shay didn't seem happy about having a floater for the shift any more than Gabby felt about leaving them in the lurch so late in the day. "Shay I'm sorry about this."
"Shut up" she shot back "nothing for you to be sorry about, you just rest up and be back by next shift yea? I need my partner."
Gabby laughed, "I'll try my best."
She heard the door open behind her, "Shay I'll speak to you later ok?"
"Yea alright. I'll check in when I get five."
"Bye" she said hanging up with a smile on her face.
"Hey you're awake" Matt said softly as she walked towards him.
"Yea Shay called"
"You feeling any better?"
"A little" she reassured, "Do you need any help?" Matt was trying to juggle many grocery bags, his keys, and the door.
"Erm yea" he said nodding towards the door.
Closing the door and taking one of the bags from him Gabby said "Did you get everything you needed?"
"Yep, there's some more ginger ale in there if you want it." He placed the bags down on the counter and wrapped his arms around her. "Have you eaten?"
"Only the toast you brought me earlier." She admitted.
"Ok, I'm going to make you something else. What do you fancy?"
"Nothing heavy" she said putting the groceries away, "just a couple of slices of toast will do."
Matt stopped and gave her a pointed look, "you can't just live on toast!" he said firmly.
"I know, but I don't know if I can stomach much more."
"Well how about I do you some grilled chicken and salad?"
Gabby shrugged "I suppose I can try that" she agreed.
"Good." He said kissing her head, "you good putting this away while I get started?"
"Yea I'm good, I'm pregnant not dying." she said rolling her eyes. Matt slapped her behind sharply. "Ouch! What was that for?" she asked rubbing the sting away.
"You know what it was for!" he said smirking at her as he walked away.
Gabby bobbed her tongue out at him as he turned his back, "I saw that!" he said playfully, both of them chuckling slightly.
They spent the next half hour chatting happily as Matt prepared lunch and Gabby sat watching him. She'd offered to help but he'd refused her offer, telling her to just chill out and he'd take care of the rest.
"Matt?" Gabby spoke quietly after a little while, Matt turning to smile at her.
"Yeah?" he questioned when he saw her thoughtful stare. "What's wrong?" he asked quickly.
"Nothing" she replied even quicker, "Well not really." She paused trying to form the words correctly, "Can I ask you something?"
"Of course"
"Did you go easy on me the other day because I'm pregnant?"
Matt's brow furrowed at the question "Why would you think that?"
"I don't know, first of all you only gave me a hand spanking, when I was expecting at least the brush and maybe the paddle after my behavior in chief's office, then when I came back from that call you didn't lay into me half as much as I thought you were going to. So I just wondered if it was because I'm pregnant." Silence surrounded them as Matt digested her words and she watched him.
"I did hold back slightly" he confirmed, "but not because your pregnant" he added quickly seeing her face change into one of frustration and slight anger.
"Then why?" she questioned pulling her lip in between her teeth.
"Because Gabby we agreed that I'd been too hard on you so I went with the more lienant punishment as it was one of the first times since the new rules. Was I too easy?"
"No" Gabby answered quickly, a little too quickly for Matt who raised a eyebrow at her.
"Did I?" he asked again.
Gabby shook her head, "No, I felt it all day and it did the trick. I suppose it's just..." She trailed off, her lip between her teeth.
"Just what?" he questioned placing a plate of grilled chicken salad in front of her and sitting down.
"Well I'm not used to being able to sit the next day" she admitted looking up at him sheepishly.
"And you could?" he asked a small smirk spreading across his face.
"Kinda. I still had a slight sting but nothing to what I'm used to."
"Ok then, well take it as a final warning and next time will be worse?" Matt offered aware that he couldn't really re-punish something.
"Yea I suppose" she said, diverting her eyes again.
Matt reached across and lifted her chin up gently, "Gabby?"
Gabby gulped debating with herself if what she was about to say was a good idea or not, "Can you, erm can I" she sighed, "Can we do a maintenance spanking today?"
Matt looked at her confused, "Erm, well I suppose so. But why?"
"Because I don't feel like I paid the price, my butt hurt all shift but it wasn't enough." she admitted looking at her husband softly.
Matt thought for a moment, "Ok. I'll give you a maintenance spanking but Gabby it's not because I don't forgive you ok?" He was desperate for her to understand that, after what had happened last time he agreed to re-spank her over a subject, it was vital that she understood he wasn't holding on to any anger over this.
"Ok" Gabby said kissing him gently, "Thank you."
Matt chuckled, "I wouldn't thank me yet."
Gabby chuckled knowing all too well what the tone lacing his words meant.
By the evening Matt suggested that they held off with the maintenance on account Gabby had been feeling rough. She'd managed to keep her lunch down, but he could see she just needed sleep. She'd agreed reclutantly before falling back to sleep on the sofa that she'd spent the best part of the day snoozing on. Not waking until the next morning. Confused to find herself tucked up in bed.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Gabby spent most of the next couple of days sleeping on and off on the sofa, her body constantly exhausted. She'd heard people say that pregnancy wiped you out but she'd never really believed it until it happened to her, she'd been struggling to keep her eyes open most of the time and the small bit of energy she did have was soon wiped out if she tried to do anything.
As Friday evening rolled in she was feeling ok having had a slightly better day. Matt had finally closed the big club contract and had not long arrived home to Gabby complaining her back was aching, and her stomach felt like it had stretched overnight. Kissing her softly he suggested she took a soothing bath, complete with candles, music and some ginger ale.
"Thanks babe" she said as she climbed into the warm bath he'd run for her, letting the bubbles surround her as her body relaxed.
Matt smiled "I'm going to go do some dinner ok?"
"Nothing heavy" she reminded him, smiling back.
"I know, chief gave me a good recipe of Donna's I'm going to try."
Gabby eyeing him suspiciously. Matt was a great fire fighter, and a great husband but he wasn't the best cook in the world and they all knew it, Donna's recipes weren't exactly an easy option. Matt scoffed seeing the look she was giving him "What" he asked.
"Really a Donna recipe? Is that wise?"
Matt stood up straight crossing his arms over his chest, "What you saying I can't hack it?"
Gabby laughed loudly "I'm just saying your track record isn't" she paused, "What was the word the chief used on me, exemplary." She draw the final word out as a smirk rested on her lips.
Matt laughed, "If I were you Mrs Casey, I'd keep the sarcastic comments to yourself" he raised his eyebrows playfully, "remember you've asked for something later, it can turn to a punishment very quickly." It had been decided that morning that she'd receive her maintenance if she was feeling up to it tonight before bed, Gabby saying she wanted it done with before they headed back to shift in the morning.
Gabby's gaze flattered slightly trying to work out if he was joking.
"Relax" he said, chuckling at her face, "I wouldn't do that." He winked "Or would I?" Before she could answer he turned on his heel and headed out towards the kitchen.
Gabby sank back into the bath more, resting her head back. An hour later she'd used all the hot water so she got out and dried herself before pulling on a fresh pair of sleep shorts and Matt's CFD sweatshirt. Twisting her hair into a knot as she walked towards the delicious smells coming from their kitchen. She laughed softly as she spotted Matt sat at the breakfast bar with Severide and Shay moving about the kitchen.
"Did you call in reinforcements?" she asked chuckling slightly.
"Maybe?" he responded with a smirk, "You feeling better?"
"Loads" she smiled back, leaning in for a kiss. "So did you even try to do it?" she asked raising her eyebrows.
"I did but it kinda went wrong" he laughed at the face she pulled. "Don't give me that look."
"What look" she shot back, pretending to be shocked by his words. "Oh you mean this look" she said raising her eyebrows again and smirking at him.
"Yes that look" he teased back, wrapping his arms around her back and pulling her in close.
"Well I could say I told you so but you know."
"You thought better of it?" he asked smugly.
"Something like that" she agreed. "Hey Shay" she said turning towards her "how did it go with the floater?"
"Really well, she just fitted in right away."
Gabby rolled her eyes "I take one shift off and you've already replaced me?"
"No babe! No one could ever replace you. But if someone's going to ride ambo with me while your cooking those babies I'd like it be her."
Severide nodded in agreement "she's sweet." He confirmed.
Gabby shaking her head "see babe!" She shot at Matt while opening the fridge, "told you we shouldn't have taken last shift off."
"Gabby you couldn't even stay awake let alone keep food down. You would have ended up being Shay's patient."
Gabby scoffed loudly "I'd have been fine"
"Gabby!" Matt said warningly "don't pout about it."
She stopped and looked at his face, realizing it wasn't a good idea to argue she just nodded. "So what is this anyway?" She asked removing the lid from one of the pots.
"Honey ginger chicken" Shay replied holding up the recipe, "it's apparently good for you and the babies and it's supposed to help with morning sickness."
"Well it smells delicious" Gabby smiled, "Are you staying to eat with us?"
Shay looked at Matt and Severide for conformation before saying "Yea, there's actually something we wanted to talk to you about."
Gabby sighed as she helped Shay dish up and walked through to the main table, if Matt had called in Shay and Severide she was sure she wasn't going to like what was about to be discussed. "What is it?" she asked rolling her eyes at them as she sat down. Matt raising his eyebrows at the action.
"First of all lose the attitude" he scolded, Gabby diverted her eyes downwards"
"Sorry" she mumbled.
"Yea" Matt said raising her chin to look her in the eye, "don't do it again!" His words holding more of a threat than she liked in front of company.
"So what is it that requires all three of you?" She asked.
"Well after what happened last shift, and your morning sickness we were hoping to convince you to take that desk now?" Severide started.
"What?" Gabby shouted, "we spoke about this! I said I'm not sitting behind a desk for nine months."
"We know you don't want to sweetie" Shay said placing her hand on top of her friends, "but we are concerned."
Gabby fought the urge to roll her eyes again, biting the inside of her cheek hard while she tried to compose herself. "Why?" she breathed out several minutes later, pushing the food around her plate.
"Gabby eat please" Matt spoke gently, brushing his hand along her back. She sighed and took a bite, presently surprised to find it tasted as nice as it smelt.
"Happy" she asked as she brought another forkful up to her mouth.
"Ecstatic" he replied eyeing her strongly. "Now you asked why?" She nodded, "Well we all have our own reasons, for me it's you broke my trust Gabby. You promised you wouldn't put yourself in danger and you did exactly that the first chance you got." She opened her mouth to respond but was met with his hand being held up, "You promised me, and you still did it. How am I meant to trust you not to do it again?"
"I thought you'd forgiven me about that" She said swallowing the tears threatening to escape.
"I have" he said turning to face her, "all was forgiven straight after you were punished for it, but that doesn't change the nagging feeling I have that you'd do it again."
Gabby nodded sadly, she knew what he was saying was right. She'd broken her promise and there was no reason for him to believe her word about it now. "I'm sorry" she whispered, her head dropping forwards slightly.
"Hey" he said lifting her chin again gently, "I'm not mad at you. Do you hear me?"
"Yes"
"That's not what this is about. And to be honest baby it's only a fraction of the reason I want you to take the desk." She smiled at him weakly as he let go off her chin "These past few days you've not had much energy, in fact I think the longest you've managed to stay awake is about an hour. We do twenty four hours for our shift, and some days we don't stop from the minute we clock in to the minute we come home. I'm concerned what that is going to do to you when you're already struggling with exhaustion."
Gabby nodded, looking towards Shay "what's your reasoning?" she asked unsure if she wanted the answer or not, after all Shay had been pretty angry with her after the incident.
"Some of the same, and some not" she said calmly, "Sometimes we have to lift patients by ourselves, like when we haven't got these men backing us up." she smiled softly towards Casey and Severide, "Sometimes we are alone and the lifting and carrying patients can't be great for you or the babies."
"I suppose your right" agreed Gabby. "But I still want to be out there, there's ways round what your saying."
Shay sighed and shook her head, "Told you this wasn't going to be easy" she shot at Casey, who shook his head at her, they all needed to remain calm if this was to go the way he hoped. Taking a deep breath she continued "Gabs, I know you don't want to be benched, you're a run into situations kinda girl and we love that about you, but now is the time for you to not being doing that. You need to think of yourself and those babies first." She grabbed her friends hands reassuringly, "Look I agree with Casey, you broke our trust by running into that car, I backed you with the chief but I'm not sure I can again."
Gabby sighed, the disappointment coming off her three favorite people suffocating her as she tried her hardest to stay calm. "And you?" she asked Severide through gritted teeth, "what's your reason?"
"I just don't like you out there while your pregnant!" he said pointedly, "no if's, but's or maybes about it, you shouldn't be out there. If it were Stella I would have forbidden her straight away but Casey here is far too easy on you, so you've already been given the rope and now you've effectively hung yourself with it."
Gabby shook her head, one thing Kelly Severide wasn't was one to hold his punches. He wasn't impressed with her and he was going to let her know it.
"You didn't just break Matts trust Gabriela, you broke mine, Shays, the chiefs. Do you realise what could have happened in that car? Do you know how selfish and stupid it was for you to go in there?" His voice was raising a little now, and tears were beginning to slide down Gabby's face, she looked at Matt hoping he'd defend her but all she got was a weak smile and shrug. He needed her to hear this, everything Kelly was saying was true. And he knew that coming from someone other than him it may actually sink in.
"I know" she almost whispered, her voice so small he could barely hear her. "I'm sorry."
"I know that" Kelly sighed, "but it doesn't answer my question." He raised an eyebrow as she started to roll her eyes before changing her mind on it being a wise idea. "Don't roll your eyes at me!" He snapped. "Answer the question! Do you realise what could have happened?"
"Yes"
"And did you know you were breaking the conditions in which you were given by Matt, Shay and the chief?"
"Yes"
"But you still did it?"
"Yes" she whimpered aware that he was making his point loud and clear.
"Would you do it again, if given the chance?"
She looked sideways at Shay and Matt, both of them watching the interaction closely eager to hear her response. "I don't know."
"That right there" he said firmly pointing his finger at her "that's the issue because I think you would and you will."
"I won't I promise" she said quickly realizing she had just pretty much signed her own transfer papers. "I'll listen to everything and I'll stay back I promise. Please Matt don't do this."
Matt shook his head, "Gabby you've heard what we've all had to say. We know your feelings but I'm not convinced, you couldn't even say no when asked if you'd do it again. That scares me."
"Well put a consequence in place that I won't like!" She said desperately, "make it a condition of the agreement. If I put myself in danger then you'll, you'll Erm..." she was racking her brain for a idea.
"Gabriela stop!" Matt said firmly, "I've already told you what would happen."
Gabby cocked her head sideways trying to remember him saying anything, as she thought back to their interaction at the firehouse her face dropped. "You wouldn't?" She stumbled.
Matt nodded his head "oh I most definitely would!"
"In front of everyone."
"Yup right in the middle of the common room."
Shays eyes were wide, she was pretty sure she knew what the couple were allauding to.
"Well then. Let me carry on riding ambo and I'll agree to that as the condition, if I do it again you can spank me in front of everyone in the common room."
"It wouldn't just be a spanking Gabby" Matt continued, "how did you feel when the chief saw you in the corner?"
"Really embarrassed." She confirmed.
"Right and how did you feel when I pulled your pants down while you were stood waiting for punishment?"
"I.." she glanced at Shay and Kelly who had paused eating their dinner watching her and Matt, Shays mouth slightly open at the insight to the punishment her friend had received. Sighing she said "I didn't like it."
"Why?"
"Because it was embarrassing, having you pull my pants down is bad enough, but having to stand with my butt on show while I waited for you to light it up made me think about why I was stood there more than ever."
"Well then I will agree to you working ambo still." Kelly cleared his throat shaking his head, he didn't agree with the way Matt was handling this, but he knew that it really wasn't his place to make the decision. Matt noticed the look on his face and said "I know you don't agree Kelly but we all deserve second chances." Turning back to Gabby he said "but if you do something like you did the other day I was pull your pants down and make you stand in the corner of the common room for everyone to witness, once I'm sure your throughly embarrassed I will bend you over the kitchen counter and take my belt to your backside until you can't sit down anymore. Do I make myself clear?"
"Yes sir."
"Good!" Matt sighed, he really hoped she wouldn't test him. "Now let's finish our dinner and maybe watch a film yes?"
"That sounds good she agreed."
