Camping Part 1

Jake and I both plopped ourselves down on the couch beside Charlie on his recliner. The local weather was broadcasting lowly, illuminating the dim living room. Jacob nudged me and I turned to see him peeking out at me out of the corner of his eye. I shrugged at him. He gave me a pointed look telling me to start the conversation. I furrowed my brow at him. Of course he wanted me to do the talking. "Chicken," I mouthed at him. He gave me another look. "Fine," I hissed at him and turned to look at Charlie.

His eyes that were glued to the reports of the weekend forecast slowly drifted from the television over to the two of us, sitting straight up on the couch, staring right back at him. He cleared his throat. "Y'need something?" he asked, sitting up straighter in his chair.

I nervously copied him and cleared my throat for no reason. "Uh, yeah, see-" I hesitated unsure of how he will react. "J-Jake and I – well," I breathed exasperated at my own illiteracy. "We both – uh," I stuttered, motioning between the two of us.

"Oh God," Charlie groaned and smudged his hand over his face. "Don't say it," he said through gritted teeth, his hand squishing over his eyes.

"Wha- Dad I,"

"No, no, no," he held up his hand to me and I clamped my mouth shut.

I looked over at Jacob who had the same expression of fear and confusion on his face. He shook his head quickly at me. Abort Mission.

I turned back to my dad. "What's wro-"

He snapped his hand back down onto his leg. "Isabella Swan," my father's face turned a frightening shade of purple and red. The vein in his forehead became more prominent as his look of anger pierced into my eyes. "You are still living under my damn roof," he seethed. "And you," he jabbed a finger at Jacob. "You got quite a pair on you to show up in my home and dump this shit on me," he growled.

Jacob and I exchanged frantic glances and watched as Charlie buried his face in his hands taking deep breaths. Jacob's eyes were bugging out of his head. Before I could even react, he quickly scrambled up from the couch and tried to make a dash to the door.

"Jacob Black!" My dad thundered at his retreating form.

My heart nearly leaped out of my chest. Holy shit. I've only ever heard my dad use that voice once before when the Mariners lost horrifically last season.

Jacob tripped over his feet and he clamped onto the wall and pushed himself back against it, his chest heaving out of fear and adrenaline. "Yes, Sir," he breathed, his hands quivering at his sides. I've never seen him so afraid. It would actually be funny if my dad didn't have that murderous look in his eye.

Charlie slowly rose from his seat and stalked toward Jacob. I stared at his beet red face twisted in rage. I couldn't bring myself to move from my tense seat on the sofa. Jacob's eyes grew even more as my dad stared daggers straight into his soul. What the hell is going on?

"You run and you're dead, son," my father said, his voice eerily calm.

Jacob put both his hands up and said with a shaking voice "Chief Swan, I swear I didn't-"

"Too late, son. You think I'm stupid?" Charlie asked.

Jacob shook his head vigorously. "N-no, Sir."

"You think I didn't raise my daughter better than this?"

Jacob's brow furrowed and his eyes darted to me then back to him. "What? I-"

"Keep your eyes off her and answer the question, Jacob," Charlie growled as he continued toward Jacob's shriveling form.

"I- no, Sir," He said as he swallowed roughly. Probably fighting his dinner back down his throat.

Charlie stopped a foot in front of him. He had to look up to meet Jacob's fearful gaze, but Jacob might as well have been two feet tall from the way he was crumbling under my dad's scrutiny.

My dad clasped his hands behind his back and looked Jacob in the eye for several moments. Full on cop mode. "Now tell me, Jacob. Do I look like a grandpa to you?" He asked casually.

What in the world? Grandpa?

"Um, no, Sir." Jacob said, his face shifting from fear to confusion.

"Alright. And do you think I want to be a grandpa yet, Jacob?"

Now my eyes were bugging out of my head. He thought he was a grandpa? He thought I was trying to tell him I was pregnant? Pregnant? How in the hell did he come up with that conclusion? I was a virgin for crying out loud!

Jacob contemplated for a second, beads of sweat glistening on his forehead. He glanced up at the ceiling then back to my dad's fierce glare. "No?"

"Good answer," Charlie sneered. "Now you better get the hell out of my house before I grab my shot gun and you drive home with a bullet hole in your ass cheek," he whispered directly in his face.

I snapped out of my frozen state on the couch and jumped up as Jacob started to slither out from between the wall and my father.

"Dad, why are you kicking him out?" I motioned to the sweating Jacob.

"Isabella Swan, don't you dare try and stand up for this fool," He tossed a hand at Jacob. "5 seconds," he said through his teeth.

Jacob began to haul ass away from my dad and sprinted to the front door.

"Wha- Dad, no. I'm not pregnant!" I shouted at my dad as he headed towards his gun cabinet.

Surprisingly, he stopped his determined march and looked back at me. "What did you say?"

I couldn't believe I had to clear my name like this. "Uh, I'm not pregnant," I said slowly.

My dad's face turned from pure rage to confusion. His eyes darted back to Jacob who was gripping the door knob for dear life. He was shaking his head at me again, obviously trying to escape rather than face the wrath of my father.

"You're not pregnant?" Charlie asked, addressing me with an expression of disbelief.

"Dad, why on earth would I be pregnant?" I huffed.

"Well, you both walk into the house with those looks on your faces," he said pointing at our bewildered expressions. "What do you expect me to think?" he gestured his arms out and slumped them back down to his sides.

I groaned and rubbed my face with my sleeves. "Dad, I'm a virgin," I hissed through my hands, very aware of the fact that both Jacob and my father now know my sexual history or lack thereof.

There was a beat of silence.

"Alright, well I better get home," Jacob said quickly and yanked the door open to finally make his escape.

"No, come back here, son," Charlie sighed and squeezed his forehead with his hand.

Jacob hesitated in the door, glancing at his car and stepped back into the house. He shut the door, watching Charlie carefully.

We stood in silence for an agonizing minute waiting for Charlie to speak. Jacob was still shivering in his boots and I was still flushed from my humiliating announcement moments before.

Charlie scratched at his head and the back of his neck for another minute before finally speaking. "So what the hell did you intend to tell me? Or ask me or uh…" he trailed off looking at both of us with his hands on his hips.

I looked at Jacob again who had his shoulders slumped and had his eyes trained on the hardwood floor.

"Um, well," I swallowed. Just spit it out. Nothing I said at this point could possibly make this nightmare worse. I took a deep breath."J-Jacob and I were wondering if we could go on a camping trip with some friends," I mumbled, twisting my sleeves in my hands.

"Camping trip?" Charlie blinked, clearly trying to figure out how he guessed so incredibly wrong.

I nodded, looking at Jacob for help. This was his trip goddammit! He continued to stare at the floor.

I looked back at Charlie who was eyeing him with a mix of confusion and pity. At this point I would be shocked if he even let us hang out anymore.

"Uh, so this trip, whose going and to where?" He sighed looking back at me.

"Um I think-" I hesitated realizing this is where Jacob was supposed to jump in and explain his plans.

"Uh, we're heading to a small campground on the rez. It's about a mile south of the Third Beach trail head," Jacob said quietly as he glanced up at Charlie through his lashes.

"And who's going?" Charlie asked, crossing his arms, fully addressing Jacob.

"Me, my friends, Quil and Embry. Bella, i-if she wants, and her friends," Jacob mumbled.

Charlie's eyes darted back to me. "Uh, yeah. I was planning on inviting Angela and Jessica to come with us," I explained.

"And for how long?" he asked in the measured voice he's been using since the vein in his forehead went back to normal.

"We were planning on heading down on Friday and coming back on Sunday," Jacob said.

"This Friday?" Charlie asked. This Friday being two days away.

Jacob nodded and shoved his hands in his jean pockets.

"So three girls and three boys?" Charlie raised an eyebrow at us.

I groaned again. The damn trip wasn't even worth it at this point. This whole evening has been a disaster and Jacob and I have only been here for 15 minutes. "Dad, we're all, you know, friends," I sighed, growing closer to cancelling the trip altogether.

"Look, Bella, I'm old but I ain't stupid. I see the looks he gives you and the looks you give him. It isn't a mystery that there might be something goin' on between you two. In case you both forgot, I am a cop. I notice things," he pointed to his eyes.

"Oh my god," I buried my face into my sleeve covered hands again. My face burned through the material of my shirt from complete and utter mortification. What does he mean he notices things? This is just ridiculous.

"Um, Sir, I-I swear there isn't anything going on. I just thought it would be a fun way to end the summer," Jacob mumbled, his cheeks turning a slight pink color.

"Well I don't know, I think that-"

"Dad! Please. I haven't really done much vacationing this summer besides visit Renee. I haven't had this fun of a summer in a long time and I would like to end it on a good note," I said, rushing through the words. "With friends," I added.

"Now Bella, you expect me to just let six teens hike out into the woods unsupervised and think that this is all in pure fun?" he asked, not buying into our plans one bit despite that fact that this has been the plan for the past week.

I rolled my eyes at his tone. "Dad, c'mon, you-"

"Well, Sir, the campsite is not completely in the woods," Jake intercepted the conversation because I clearly was going nowhere with my attempts. "It's going to have beach access and it's in a rather populated area so we won't be completely isolated. My friends and I have camped there many times. It's actually an end of the summer tradition. And since Bella has been doing better and enjoying herself this summer, I thought it would be fun to invite her to join us," Jacob shrugged, referring to my gray filled days of sorrow earlier this year.

I guess it was true. I have been doing a lot better. I haven't even really thought of those days in, well, a while. And although I have my moments, I really do feel that this summer was one of healing and letting go. Jacob has been the glue that has mended my shattered pieces together. I might not be exactly the way I was before, but I would be whole again. I felt whole. Because of Jacob. Jacob.

Charlie sighed heavily, running his hand through his hair. "Alright well, you make a good point, son. I'm sorry about exploding on you like that. I just don't want Bella to get hurt again. I hope you would understand where I'm coming from," Charlie said quietly.

This words broke me out of my thoughts. I never knew he felt that way. For the most part he has been observing me and only asking rather surface level questions. Charlie had never been one for heart felt words and affection.

"I completely understand, Sir. I would never, ever hurt her like that. And I understand if you don't feel comfortable with her coming with us," Jacob replied.

I looked up at Jacob in shock. I thought we were working as a team here!

Charlie nodded. "Thank you."

Great. Thanks a lot Jacob.

Charlie grew quiet for a moment and scratched at his stubble on his chin. He was thinking.

Finally he spoke. "But, I guess a weekend away, with friends, wouldn't be the worst thing," he sighed, defeated. "As long as Jessica and Angela can go with you, and their parents are aware of this little trip," Charlie said sternly, looking me directly in the eye.

My face broke out into a huge grin. I launched myself at my dad and threw my arms around his neck. "Thank you, thank you, thank you!" I squealed and kissed his cheek before releasing him.

Charlie cleared his throat, his cheeks turning a familiar shade of red. "Alright, well, I expect you to at least attempt to call me when you get there. I know the phone service can be spotty but at least try," He said.

I nodded excitedly, my smile plastered to my face. I glanced at Jacob who was fighting a huge grin from his face and failing terribly.

"And, I expect no funny business, boy, you hear?" Charlie pointed a finger at Jacob, giving him only a fraction of his glare from earlier. "That means no alcohol, no drugs, enough tents and sleeping bags for everyone, and you boys will sleep separately from the ladies," Charlie said as he listed his demands on his fingers.

Jacob quickly shucked his smile away and nodded. "Yes, Sir."

"And don't think I won't make each and every one of you take a breathalyzer and urine test when you get back," he looked us both in the eye this time.

We both nodded, all grins completely gone.

"Alright," Charlie sighed and stretched his back. "I need a beer."
