Chapter 5:
Picking up the Pieces
RAVEN'S POV
Raven never liked big crowds. Even when she lived with the monks of Azaroth, she wasn't really allowed to be surrounded by a lot of people. They taught her to remove her emotions and links with others because complete disassociation helped her deal with her already volatile powers from going haywire. She didn't have many friends. Not because she didn't try, but because the monks assumed that she was dangerous. While that may have been true, it not only hurt her feelings, but it didn't help her get close with others either. Social queues were lost on her and even with her team she found herself missing something fundamental that allowed her to get along with them as smoothly as she thought she should.
"Her team!" Ugh, that was a complicated situation now that she didn't know where more than half of them were whisked off too. She felt a little better after waking up and meeting the self-proclaimed "Ghost Boy". There was something off about him though and she couldn't quite put her finger on it. He was powerful, that much she could tell. Almost as powerful as her when she had fought off Trigon. Probably more powerful if she was being honest with herself. Enough about that however, she needed to find her team and had no idea how to do that. Pulling out an extra communicator she kept just in case the one she had broke and tried to contact Robin again and this time she finally got through
"Raven!!!! You're safe! Where are you? How have you been? Have you heard from the others? What's going-" Robin started
"I'm okay Robin. I'm safe and sound. I'm somewhere in Illinois. A place called Amity Park. I just woke up not too long ago and I'm headed back to the base now" Raven replied
"Amity Park? How did you get that far? Actually you don't even know that, it doesn't matter though, will you be able to get here? I've assembled the other honorary Titans from the different quadrants to help find Starfire, Beast Boy and Cyborg." Robin replied urgently
"I'll be there as soon as I can. I might have to make a few jumps with my portal. I'm a little weakened from that battle with Mumbo. Who would've thought he'd give us so much trouble?" Raven responded.
"Not me in my wildest dreams, and trust me, having you guys as my team, and dealing with Slade not too long ago I thought I've seen it all."
"Even Trigon?" Raven said amusedly
"Ugh, Don't remind me. Demon Dads are terrible. Wait, did you just make a joke?" Robin asked "You've been hanging with Beast Boy too much." he joked.
"Maybe, but we can't prove that theory wrong until I get back to the Tower. We need to find our friends." responded Raven.
"Roger that. Robin out." the communicator sounded out with a soft beep.
"I need to conjure up some power and try to make it to Jump City." Raven thought to herself.
"AZARATH, METRION, ZINTHOS!!!!!"
A black cesspool of what looked like molten tar and shadows formed and pierced the space in front of Raven. She stepped in and immediately felt the coldness of the portal. If you've never traveled by shadow portal, the only thing you need to know is that it feels unnatural and gives you a sneaking suspicion that someone might be staring at you. You feel weightless yet solid. Your body feels as though it's shifting through a gaseous state to a solid state at the same time. The shadows are darker than an abyss and colder than the furthest reachest of the ocean. It took a while in the beginning of using her powers, but she finally doesn't shiver when walking throughit. She stepped out of the portal and saw that she was even closer than she thought. She arrived right outside Jump City. What Raven wasn't expecting was how tired she felt. It was as though someone smacked all the air out of her lungs and kicked her onto her back. She collapsed in dirt and her head started to ache. Ugh. She hated teleporting without enough energy. The nausea made her want to puke.
She took in the sights. She could see the welcome to Jump City sign about 20 feet ahead of her. It was bright and welcoming. Huh, as she looked closer Raven noticed that someone had some fun with can of spray paint. The graffiti was childish, but it had a giant Titans logo with the words "Home of the Titans, Best crime fighters this world has ever seen." Raven couldn't help but chuckle at the ambitious art, but she also couldn't deny how happy it made her feel knowing that the people appreciated them. It took a long time, but she was glad that the city came around and trusted their word. Before, they were all teenage nuisances who got in the way of police work. But slowly they showed the people of Jump City they were capable. The trust getting so strong that If the Titans needed the city to evacuate, there were shelters for people to hide in until the heavy damage was done. Raven shook her head and dispelled those thoughts. She needed to head over to Titans Tower. She started to float over when she realized she couldn't.
"Must be a lot more wiped out than I'd like. Guess I'm gonna have to walk there until my powers come back."
As she made her way into the city, she wondered about where Beast Boy was, where Starfire and Cyborg had ended up. She missed her friends. She tried to reach out to their minds but wherever they were, she couldn't reach them. She hoped they were okay.
Elsewhere
All he could think about was keeping ahead. He was scared. He couldn't attack his pursuer. Nothing he used worked. It kind of just phased right through him. That terrified him. What kind of enemy could you not attack? Why did this crazy stuff always happen to the good looking guys? He changed into a hawk to try and gain more leverage against his pursuer, hopefully giving him enough edge to escape. The only solace was that whatever weapons this guy was using didn't work on him either.
"Get back here Bertrand!!!!" yelled the machine like monster
"My name is Beast Boy!!! Haven't you heard of me? Teen Titan from Jump City? Bad boy supreme? Admired by all the ladies?" yelled the green teen
"ENOUGH!!! I AM SKULKER, THE GHOST ZONE'S MIGHTIEST HUNTER!!! I WILL HAVE YOUR PELT BERTRAND FOR INTERFERING WITH MY QUIET TIME!!!"
"Skulker huh? Adding that to the memory bank" Beast Boy thought to himself. "HEY SKULK PANTS, WHY DON'T YOU LEAVE ME ALONE? IT'S NOT MY FAULT I LANDED ON YOUR REPLICA OF THE PERSIAN WAR!!!!" Yeah, the guy had a serious collection of miniature figures that he used to stage different wars of different eras. At least that's what it looked like before I accidently fell on top of the whole Persian Army. He was not happy about that. After he saw me change into different animals he started calling me Bertrand, whoever that is."
"Bertrand!!!" yelled Skulker as he shot another missle. "I'm the greatest hunter and you will be my prey. It took me 3 months to get that whole board set up!!" Beast Boy dodged the missle and turned back into human form. He faced Skulker, visibly annoyed by him now. "ENOUGH" Beast Boy yelled "I didn't do it on purpose, and my name ISN'T Bertrand! Now, can you please tell me where I am?" Skulker was intrigued now, " A Green Boy who isn't a ghost but can transform into animals? He thought to himself.
"It doesn't matter anymore kid, you messed up my replica so I'm gonna capture you and put your head on a display" he said with a twisted grin.
Beast Boy immediately understood that grin and realized he'd have to fight his way out or he was gonna die. He decided he was just gonna fight. "Maybe if I take one of his weapons I can use it against him?" he thought to himself. As he was about to transform he saw a green infused blue beam being shot out from the distance and it connected to Skulkers chest plate and knocked him back about 200 ft away. The shot was accompanied by a giant "BOO YEAH" and honestly, Beast Boy was never more happy to hear that. He took the opportunity to change into a Gorilla and then closed the gap on Skulker to deliver a devastating blow to his body. As soon as his fist was about to connect Skulker grabbed it and said "Never again, not by another Gorilla" he pushed Beast Boy aside and decided to call it quits when he realized a tall Robot like human helped his prey onto his feet
"I'm not done with you 'Beast Boy'. When I finish upgrading my equipment, I'm coming for you and your robot friend" Skulker said dramatically as he disappeared into thin air. Beast Boy looked up to Cyborg and said "Thank HEAVENS you're here. I thought I was all by myself"
"Yeah same here Shortstack." Cyborg replied. "I woke up and this guy with a clock staff told me that you needed my help and then teleported me here? He gave me a slight upgrade to help fight off any "pursuers" I'm guessing he meant tin man over there. Also said something about Starfire being here too, with Frost Yetis and not to worry? He was very vague but he gave us one use map and it's supposed to bring us to her. Either way I'm glad I found one of our teammates" Beast Boy nodded his head in agreement as he recited what happened to him until this moment
"I fell through the ceiling and landed on that robot guys Persian War replica, he called me Bertrand and then chased me all the way out here. I had been on the run for a few hours. I was about to make a last stand before you saved my hide" he grinned with a cheesy smile. Cyborg laughed "Well, what are friends for? I'll always have your back BB, as long as you have mine as well" as he lightly punched Beast Boys arm
"For sure" Beast Boy responded "So, any idea where we are?"
"The man with the Clock Staff said the 'Ghost Zone' whatever that means" Cyborg said cryptically. "I doubt he is serious, probably an alternate dimension or pocket dimension."
"Maybe" said Beast Boy "But this guy was hard to hit, as though he phased through my attacks. His weapons didn't hurt me all that much, some bruises, but maybe I wasn't what the weapons were designed to attack? I don't know anymore, my head hurts!!"
Cyborg laughed "Either way, let's go and see where these Frost Yetis are, we need to find Starfire and the rest of the gang"

Back at Titans Tower
ROBIN'S POV
Robin was pacing back and forth. It's been about 2 days since Raven finally arrived back at the tower from Amity Park and they still haven't found the rest of the Titans. He had summoned all the honorary Titans except for the "Ghost Kid" Raven told him about Danny as soon as she got back to the tower. She looked a little reluctant to talk about him, but he was thankful she did. It meant they had another possible ally in the fight against evil. If he didn't have to go search the world for their friends he'd have gone and thanked him personally. He had his doubts though. Although grateful, he didn't know the boy and didn't want to drag him further into the mistakes Robin made when handling his team. Also, it wouldn't be the first time an enemy pretended to be a friend. But regarding the current situation, It's no one else problem but the Titans right now, but he would be sure to visit the Ghost kid when he got the chance and vet him out personally.
"What's the current status?" Robin spoke into communicator.
"Same as it was an hour ago Robin." AquaLad responded back. "I've been combing through the sea and asking all my sea creatures buddies to keep an eye out for your teammates, but we havent gotten anything yet. I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything though"
Robin sighed in exhaustion, "Thanks AquaLad, I know I'm probably stressing you out, but I can't help it. I can't rest easy until I know they are all safe."
"No sweat Robin, believe me when I say that I understand that feeling completely." And with that, AquaLad signaled out to continue looking. Robin really did appreciate all the effort that went into the search. All in all he enlisted all the Honorary Titans. First it was Titans East consisting of Bumble Bee, Speedy, AquaLad, and Más y Menos. Titans North which included Red Star, Argent, Kole, Gnarrk, and FlameBird. Last but definitely not least is Titans South located in Mexico and Florida, which comprised of Pantha, Wildebeest and Hot Spot.
Some had stayed around like Speedy, Bumble Bee, and Surprisingly Argent. She seemed to have found a slight soft spot for StarFire and is actually good company to have around. Maybe because they both missed Starfire's presence? The rest went searching around their own areas. They all used the Batcaves computer database to do an in depth search of any new information. Batman was thankfully supportive throughout this ordeal which is honestly helpful in him keeping his sanity. But no matter where they looked, It's like they don't even exist in this world anymore and as great of a support system he has right now, his anxiety was starting to reach it's limit. He didn't know how much longer he could take not knowing where or how his team was doing. They kept doing patrols around the world. Calling in help from the Justice League as well and getting tips anywhere they can find them. Still, after days of searching they came up empty.
"Let me know if you guys get any new information, I'm gonna go get some sleep" Robin spoke over the communicators and that shocked a few of the Titans who knew Robin and how he wasn't the first to partake in self care. Maybe it was the exhaustion, the hopeless feeling, or the fact that he knew his friends wanted him to be at his best, but he knew that not sleeping was gonna hurt him in the long run.
"Good I was wondering when you were gonna go to bed. You have been running yourself ragged for the last few days." Speedy responded "I'm sending Raven back here as well." Robin nodded. Raven had been working as hard as him, all of them really. Traveling back and forth to all the teams and helping teleport them around I'm sure has taken it's toll on her. "I'll let her know that you're sleeping when we can connect back with her communicator." Speedy concluded. Robin frowned "Is it not connected?" Speedy looked over at him quizzically. "Yeah you definitely need sleep. He laughed. "She's teleporting people, her communicator doesn't work in the portals, it messes with the frequencies. Get some rest buddy, l'll catch her up when she gets back" Robin conceded andleft to his room.
As he entered his room he realized he probably should clean up a bit. He grabbed the extra clothes on the floor and tossed it into his laundry bin. He was usually really tidy and organized but that had been the last thing ok his mind recently. He went into his closet and drawers to grab some pajamas for a shower. He was thankful he decided to make each personal room in the Titans Tower have its own bathroom. The upgrade allowed it so that others didn't have to stress about waiting for others. It also made it so much easier to be by himself when he needed it and not worry about people knocking on the door and bothering him. Sometimes he needed the quiet. He chuckled, Beast Boy would've made a joke about how all Robin best attribute is his brooding eyes. Gosh, he really missed his team. He finished brushing his teeth and jumped into the shower to help clear his head. The water pressure hitting him helped soothe him. It reminded him of the first shower he took at Bruce's house when he was first adopted. Ironically, he was just as sad at the time, probably sadder now then before. He had just lost his parents and Bruce took him under his wing. He had never been in mansion before and honestly he didn't think much of Bruce at the moment, but he did enjoy that shower. It felt as though the stress holding him had actually been taken away, at least for that moment. He took a deep breath and finished washing up. He decided that he was gonna renew his efforts after he slept. He was given an opportunity by Bruce, by his friends, to help those around him. They made him a better person and he owed it to them to not only try harder, but to never give up no matter how bleak the task seemed. He knew his friends were still alive. They weren't weak and they always found ways to surprise him. They were gonna get back together and they were gonna find Mumbo and pay him back a thousand times. And hopefully find out how what his true objective for grabbing that orb is all about. Something felt off but he knew that once they found out what that orb was, it would crack open this mystery.
He stepped out of the shower and grabbed a towel. Looking over his body he realized he really toned out the last few years fighting as a Titan. He noticed the scars from Slade and Trigon. Not many people knew but he got a scar across his chest from Trigon and one on his abdomen from Slade. Both had really pushed him to his limit and they were constant reminders that he needed to be stronger. He'd have to speak to Cyborg when he got back about a few choice upgrades he'd like to add too his arsenal. "If he got back." No, he will get back. Cyborge is capable and smart. Definitely the smartest when it comes to tech. Besides he had a score to settle in that racing game he plays. Even though Cy and BB have a good competition in video games, Robin secretly beats the high scores and changes the names to BBLM(BeastBoyLadiesMan) Or CYBG when he does. It keeps the two competitive and it allows him to watch them look confused when they notice their tags on scores they didn't beat. Seemed uncharacteristic of him he knew, but it was kind of fun. He can be a teenager too you know.
Robin went over to his bed and laid down. He was in a better mood after thinking about his friends. But his stress started to come back a little when he thought of his last friend, well, girlfriend now. StarFire. What an amazing girl. He had finally confessed his feelings to her recently after the Tokyo incident and they had tentatively gotten closer and closer. He was so elated when he found out she felt the same way. He decided that he would have to be more open about himself. One, because she was practically an open book and she wasn't good at picking up hints and mannerisms quite yet. She was better, much better than before at it. But sometimes it would just allude her. The second reason was because he knew that being secluded with his feelings could potentially ruin this relationship with her and he couldn't lose her. So you can imagine how this whole ordeal is hitting him.
He got separated from his girlfriend and he was being open. It's almost as though the world is actively trying to test him. He just wanted to kick villain butt and spend time with StarFire and his friends. Thinking about all this is gonna continue to drive me crazy" With that he turned off his lights and pulled the covers over him. Before his eyes drifted he told himself he was gonna do better next time thoug. He vowed to himself that he wouldn't make the same mistake again, and with that he had exhausted all his mental capacity for the day. He turned over and fell asleep almost immediately.
TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
Cold…. Cold was all she felt as she was drifting through the mountain ranges. Gusts of wind chilling her down to her bones. StarFire had landed in the middle of a snowstorm, knocked through the air and landing in a giant pile of snow. At first she was excited, she hadn't really gotten to play around in the frozen water that is known as snow and was gonna tell Robin about this amazing discovery but then immediately she realized that her friends weren't there. "Robin wasn't there" she thought to herself. Where was she? How did she get here? He brain felt a sharp pain as the memories flooded back. Right, Mumbo. She was gonna get back at that crazy Magic Man when she could. Until then, she powered up her energy beams to try and keep herself warm. She flew high up to get a vantage point. She noticed that to the north it looked like a giant city was located in the depths of the mountainous range. It was gonna take her a while, even with flying, to get there.
"Hopefully I can find the people who reside here and make friends with the locals!" She started to make her way down the mountain when she noticed that the winds started to pick up. She lost her balance mid air and landed about a km away. The weirdest part is she landed on a pile of fur. Instantly enjoying the warmth she cuddled closer to it until the pile of fur started to move. She had never seen fur move on it's own so she pushed away to get a better look. What's she saw surprised her, standing at about 15 to 20 ft with a Gold cloak, a golden loin cloth and the face of a beast. White soft fur and had horns made of what looked like pure ice. This beast looked terrifying but StarFire knew better than the judge solely on appearances.
"My apologies good giant sir. My balance was shaken mid flight and I landed on you. Your fur was so soft I couldn't help but hold close onto it." She said amicably. The Frost Giant looked at her strangely and spoke with a voice that shook the snowcaps off mountains
"It's okay little one. I noticed you just as we were about to collide. You said you were flying yes? Are you a ghost too?"
"Ghost?" She thought to herself "No I am not a ghost. I'm a Tamaranean from the planet Tamaran. I landed here by accident and I'm trying to find my way back to the land of California to meet up with my friends.
"The land of California? So you're from Earth" the beast responded.
"That is where I'm currently residing" StarFire responded. "My name is StarFire, may I ask what is yours?"
"My name is Blizzard, like the raging storm you see now. I was in search of some herbs that grow in this area and I was just about to head back to my village. StarFire right? she nodded "I know we just met but I feel a kindred spirit with you, would you like to come back with me? My chief FrostBite might be also be able to help you find your way back to this land of California you speak of."
"Really?" StarFire exclaimed "I would much appreciate the help. Hopefully I can find a way to pay you back when I reconnect with my friends"
"We just have to keep traveling north for the next couple miles. Do you think you can handle that?" Blizzard asked
"Lead the way friend Blizzard. I would like much to see this village you speak of. Do you have many friends like you there?" StarFire asked with sparkling eyes
"Yes, We do. You'll find out more when we get there" Blizzard responded. "Come, let's go before the winds pick up again" StarFire nodded and dusted off the excess snow on her. Hopefully she could find out where she was and how to get home. Blizzard seemed nice enough but she was preparing herself for anything. She really wanted to see Robin soon
AND THATS IT FOLKS FOR NOW. IM GONNA UPDATE EVERY TUESDAY FROM HERE ON OUT SINCE IT'S MY DAY OFF. THANKS AGAIN FOR THE SUPPORT. COMMENT AND FAVORITE SO THAT YOU GET NOTIFICATIONS FOR WHEN I DROP A NEW CHAPTER. YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING
