It wouldn't be much of a fan fiction if I owned Merlin.

The first chapter starts just after she went to Gaius (the morning after she made the room catch fire). To my understanding of the canon, Merlin returned to Gaius (and listened to his conversation with Morgana) after he helped to clean Morgana's room. Then she returned to her room, met Gwen, and went to sleep. After this Merlin went to pick the flowers, and reached her chambers to give them to her, where he met Gwen.

Chapter 1

She was nearly back to her room. Gaius was still the same, still condescending, still treating her like a crazy child that needs to be comforted and calmed. Still giving her his useless potions. She must trust him? He didn't even consider her opinion, he just give her excuses and alternative explanations. He may be right, but that's even more confusing. Why rule out what she told him without any actual consideration? If it's an accident -and he is right- then why-

"Gwen!" Yeah. Morgana closed the door behind herself.
"What's wrong?" She said while coming toward her.
"Gaius won't listen. He just-" Her voice broke, and she couldn't help but hug her friend.
"I'm sure he had his reasons. He knows what he is doing." Gwen said while stroking her back.
"And I know what I saw! I know he- I know he knows what he is doing, but if he was right, then why acting like that?" Gwen was... confused?
"I-I do want to help you, but you need to start from the beginning." She went toward the bed and sat there, while still holding her hands. "Ok? What did you tell him? I'm sure there is a reason why he acted like that."

"I- you are right. I went to talk about what happened. About the fire. I was awake. I saw what happened." She was surprised.
"Then you must tell the king!"
"No!" She was thrown aback. "I didn't mean it like that, but I can't. He- You must keep this a secret. It's really important, promise me."
"Of course. You know you can trust me." Good.
"I know. But- I caused the fire. It was not my intention. I just looked at the flames, and they grew higher. Then I screamed, and the glass broke. Windows don't break just by screaming." Then -as if to convince herself- she added in a lower voice "At least it never happened before."
"I don't understand. What are you suggesting?" She looked scared at the very idea, which meant she thought of the same thing as her: she wasn't delusional.

"Magic."
"No. It's illegal. You don't even know how to use it! It must be something else."
"Why? Just because we don't want it to be, it doesn't mean that it's not. I need to know, and Gaius did the same thing as you did. He said it was the wind. The wind. I mean, that flame was steady and vertical. It didn't move sideways. It just stretched upward for a meter. I never seen anything like that to happen naturally, and surely not for the wind!" Gwen was at loss of words. "Not to mention my dreams. The last time it happened I saw a raven and next night monsters appeared, and a lot of people died. The time before Arthur came back on the brink of death, poisoned by a beast. Just- don't lie to me. It's magic, isn't it?"

"What if it is? What can you do? You can't use it!" This was a yes, right?
"I know. That's what I want too, but it just happens. I have no control over it! I want it to stop, but if we agree that it's magic, then how? Who can I ask? There must be a way. This can't happen to every sorcerer!" She flinched at that. "Morgana..."
"I don't want to be one. I want it to stop. Do you know any who can use magic and can teach me?"
"No!" scared at even the thought. "I don't, and it'd be too dangerous!"

"Then -maybe- someone we can trust, one who knows someone who can use magic. There must be a way! What?" Gwen's eyes widened a bit when she mentioned a friend of a friend "You thought of something... of someone. I'm trusting you with my life, you know you can trust me."
"It's just-" She faltered, scarred.
"I'll die if don't stop this. Uther won't spare me." She gave in.
"You remember that time we went to help Merlin's home village?" Morgana nodded "That day a friend of Merlin died. He used magic, remember? Maybe Merlin knows something about it." Merlin? "Maybe he saw his childhood friend learn to control it. That's all you need to make this stop, right?"
"Yes."

This was unquestionably Gwen agreeing that she had magic. Morgana sighed: She wasn't going mad. Not that her situation improved much: Uther will surely end up killing her, it was just a matter of time.

"You need to rest." Gwen added with a soothing voice.
"No! I can't wait! What if something happens again?"
"Then you should take what Gaius gave you, and sleep."
"No. I trusted him for years, and he only ever repaid me with lies. No, what I need now is Merlin. Can you go call him? Don't make Gaius suspect anything." She wasn't convinced. "I'll be fine."
"I will do it, but you'll lie down in the meantime, ok?"
"Ok", she accepted, knowing that it won't make me sleep. "Don't tell him anything, I want to see his first reaction, ok?"
"Ok." She was worried.
Morgana smiled "Thank you, Gwen."

After Morgana finally lay on the bed, Gwen left the room, toward Gaius' quarters. This was dangerous, too dangerous, and Morgana needed her by her side. She quickly reached the physician's, and knocked the door. Gaius told her to enter. Ok, someone who may call Merlin. They were both sitting on the table preparing something. Hopefully Gaius will let him go.

He was looking at her. "Did something happen? Is lady Morgana unwell?" Naturally, Gaius was worried.
"Oh, no. I came just to relay a message to Merlin. Arthur needs you now. He said it's urgent." Merlin stood up. Gaius didn't buy it, but he just gave a meaningful look at Merlin, and he let them go. She left the room with Merlin just behind her.

"How is she?" He asked as soon as the door closed.
"She is shaken, and-" She checked the closed door behind her. "she is the one who called you, not Arthur. It's urgent." He was surprised -a pleasant surprise- but it didn't last long as he quickly became worried.
"Why did you keep this from Gaius?" he wondered while they were walking.
"She asked me to. She is a bit angry at Gaius, but she'll tell you everything herself."

After they reached the room she knocked. No one answered, no sound at all. She opened the door, and they entered just to see that Morgana was actually sleeping, while moving and turning over her bed. Gwen looked at him conflicted. She didn't want to wake her, but making him come for nothing was a bit...

"It's fine, I'll come back later." He saved her.
"Thank you. She needed your help, it was really important, but she really needed some sleep. I can't bring myself to wake her."

She didn't expect to fall asleep, and that made her lower her guard. She was more tired than the thought. Thankfully she was so used to Gaius' potions that even the smaller sound was enough to wake her. The opening door woke her, but by the time she opened her eyes the door was already closing behind him.

"Wait!" she shouted, now fully awake.

He moved his head in, surprised. Thankfully she was already fully clothed: it wouldn't be proper otherwise.

"Yes, my lady?"
"Come in." She ordered. He closed the door behind him. "I remember that time we went with you to help your mother's village. You had a friend. I'm sorry to make you remember this, but he was a sorcerer. I need you to tell me what you know." He was surprised. He wasn't expecting her to remember, and was probably scared. "I won't tell Uther... if you answer me." He didn't take that well.
"Morgana!" Gwen protested.
She looked toward her "I need answers, and he is the only one we know."
"That's no reason to threaten your friends!" She was shocked, and scared.

Morgana didn't want to lose her. She couldn't let her think that magic corrupter her, so she lowered her eyes and whispered "I'm sorry." She looked back at him full of regret "You are a dear friend," and while Uther would kill me without a second thought, he won't believe a servant over me. "and I need help." Now her face was afraid "I-I have magic, and I need to know how to control it," He was surprised "or Uther will discover and kill me, if I don't die burned in my own bed before he can. If you know something -anything- please, tell me. I know you are not a sorcerer, but if you learned something seeing your friend -or you know someone in Camelot who can teach me- it'd be a great help." He was conflicted "I don't need much, just to stop it from going out of control. I don't want to use it." She was begging now, but as disgraceful as it may be, she needed help more than anything "I'm not a monster, Merlin. Please." He finally decided to talk. Hopefully he opted for helping her.
"I know. Whatever Uther says, you are not a monster. Don't even think about it. Like Will usually said, magic is more like a tool. You don't need to be afraid of your power: it's a gift. Will saved Arthur life. He was a good man, and a sorcerer. Magic is like a sword: you can end up being a bandit or a knight, but it's not the sword's fault. It's in the person, and you are a good person, Morgana. Uther says what he says just to justify himself. Don't believe him. Being scared will only make it harder to control your magic. That's the biggest problem, and-"
"How can I not be scared?! If Uther discovers me, I'm dead!"

"I know, but it's not as hard as it may seem to hide from him." As impossible as it was, he seemed to speak from experience. "Once you learn how to control your magic, and stop the accidents, you'll be safe."
"Really?" She asked full of disbelief.
"How many can actually speak against you? His beloved ward being a sorceress? No way. Obviously, you'll need to be careful, but you have us. You are not alone. If you need something -or some cover- we'll be here for you. Right?" He asked looking at Gwen. She was scared.
"I'm sorry, Gwen." Morgana said before her friend could answer. "I didn't want to bring you in this. I'm sorry. You don't have to-"
"No, I'll be here for you. You were there for me when my father needed help, now it's time for me to do something to help you. I consider you as a dear friend, and I won't fail you when you need me the most." Morgana couldn't help but smile at her.

"Thanks." She really meant it. Then she turned toward Merlin. She was calmer now. Merlin was right, she wasn't alone. She could see a way. It wasn't ideal, but she had a chance to survive. "But still, how can I control it? How can I make sure no accident happens again? What about my dreams? I can dream the future, Merlin. Wait, you are not surprised!" She narrowed her eyes "Gaius told you." He was about to reply "Don't justify him! I trusted him, and he kept on feeding me lies. You won't talk me out of this. He made me think I was going mad!" He finally nodded "What did he tell you about my dreams?"
"He thinks you are a seer, they can see the future. It's not magic, but really close. He thought he was of protecting you."
"By lying to me?"
He was about to answer, but gave up. "Your gifts are not something you need to fear. That time Arthur was bewitched by that foreign noblewoman, Gaius told me what you dreamed. Only thanks to that we managed to save him. You shouldn't think about them negatively, they can do much good. You saved arthur's life."

Gwen seemed more relaxed to hear that, but things don't add up. If her dream was true, then that woman tried to kill Arthur, not elope with him.

"So you lied to me."
"Ah... Gaius asked me to, I believed him like you did, only today I discovered that your situation was much worse than I thought it was." He didn't seem to be lying.
"Promise me that you won't lie to me ever again." He wavered, and appeared to be conflicted.
"What are you keeping from me? I'm trusting you with my life, Merlin. Please. Whatever it is, you can trust me. I won't betray the kindness you showed me today. We are friends, right?" He looked at Gwen, as if to seek confirmation that he could trust her too.
"Don't even ask." she promptly replied.

"You remembered back at my mother's village? I was next to Will when the magic happened." They nodded. They were both there when Arthur called that out in front of everyone. "Then he got hit by a dart, and he was about to die, so he covered for me by revealing that he was the sorcerer to Arthur." It took a while for that to sink in.
"You are a sorcerer?" Gwen was shocked, scarred and betrayed all at once, which in turn hurt Merlin.
"The noblewoman that seduced Arthur was not human." he said while trying to justify himself "If I didn't have magic I wouldn't have been able to stop them. With Uther around I couldn't risk to saying anything. I only used magic for good, Gwen." It didn't seem to be effective.
"I know you would, " Replied Morgana. "but can you show me some magic?" He nodded, looked around, and settled for a candle on the wall.

"This is useful if you are in the dark, and need to light a torch: `Leohtbora`", and the candle was lit. He turned toward her "I can also teach you how to stop fire, but what you need learn first is to avoid starting it. It's actually simple, you need to get familiar with your magic, and stop fearing it. In case anything happens," «You can call me like this.» her eyes went wide open at hearing his voice in her head. «I'll teach you how.»
Morgana turned toward Gwen. Considering her surprised expression she didn't need to ask her to know that she heard him too.
"You can also choose who to speak with. It's really useful against Uther. Mordred -the druid kid we helped- reached out to me like this. The guards would have caught him otherwise. You are not alone. While I was here, I helped Arthur with my magic. I'll help you too. We'll help each other." Then he turned toward Gwen. "You too, Gwen. If there is ever a problem, you can ask me. I'll do my best to help you." Somehow that managed to surprise Gwen.
"You are the sorcerer who healed my father's life!" Merlin opened his mouth, but stopped before speaking.
He then contined "I'm sorry, I didn't want you to get suspected. I just wanted to help him."
Gwen smiled at him "Oh, no. It's fine. Rather, thank you for giving me some more days with him." He was visibly relieved to hear that.

It seems Gwen was accepting them, and she had someone else with her now. Someone just like her.

"So, I need to stop fearing my magic, and get familiar with it, right? I'd still like to learn how to stop fire, though. Will you teach me?"
He smiled "Sure." He seemed rather happy about all this. Especially now that Gwen had accepted him.
"You should sleep, now. He can teach you later, right?" Gwen asked her. She did feel tired, but if not now, when?
"About that," added Merlin "You don't need to trust him, but Gaius already knows about your magic, and if if we meet there it'll be safer: we'd have a cover story."
Morgana pondered for a bit before accepting "Ok, I will come. Thank you, Merlin. See you tonight."

Then he said goodbye to Gwen, and walked away smiling. Apparently, she wasn't the only one that felt alone.
