Hey guys, sorry to take so long to update. I spend the first few weeks after the last update, seriously planning this story and making a lot more ground ideas which I really needed because I was running low on them. The weeks since those though, I've been having to deal with planning my schedule for next year and planning other things. Plus I have had a ton of homework in the last month of school so it's taken me a while to find the time, energy, and inspiration to write this story. Then, I got off school two Wednesday's ago, but I had just a week before I left to go to, practically, all-day summer school. Plus, it took a while for me to reconnect with my beta Akira, as we have been both busy the past while. But, finally, here's the next chapter; I hope you enjoy!
Disclaimer: Don't own Percy Jackson of course!
Song I'm listening to right now: 'Mad World' by Gary Jules(A while ago at lunch, I was sitting in the band room(my cousin is in band and I usually sit in there with him and our friends) and some kid went to the piano and played this song. I had this song stuck in my head all day and couldn't remember its words for the life of me. Luckily my mom is awesome and when I hummed the tune to her, she was able to tell me a few of the lines so that I could find it and so I kept listening to it so, if I ever forget its name again, I can remember enough lines so I can recall it easier(plus it's a good song...)).
Chapter 9
Narrator's(my) P.O.V.
~~~~~~At Camp Jupiter~~~~~~
Juliana had had enough of the Campers at Camp Jupiter. Percy had always told her of the courage and strength they had. The determination and skill that they brought to battle and the heart that they fought with. Juliana had always respected the Roman demigods because of the stories Percy had told her. But, either he must have been wrong or they had changed a lot in the past few centuries. Her group Cambiare had some of the most skilled and strong warriors in Chaos' army, but of course, the idiotic Roman demigods couldn't look past their age and size and constantly harassed them. They underestimated them; anytime a Cambiaran asked to fight against a demigod, all the Roman demigods in the vicinity would start laughing, saying that it was not right to pick on such a small kid.
At first it was amusing, but now it had become annoying and downright insulting to the members of the group and Juliana had had enough of it; her respect in the Roman's was gone and she was furious. How dare they treat her soldiers so horribly; who did they think they were? Now, Juliana has always been a child at heart; that's why she always stayed at such a young age. But, these imbeciles have been testing her limits and now that child-like quality in her had all but vanished and she was ready to get some revenge. So, after lunch when all the Roman's usually headed over to the arena to fight and Juliana's soldiers tried to fight as well(though they were always turned down), Juliana marched right over to there, fists clenched and eyes narrowed as she stared straight ahead.
Everyone anywhere near her immediately stepped back, not liking the pulsating aura that was coming off her. Just as Juliana made it to the area, she changed her expression and marched into the arena, head held high. Immediately sensing their leader, the Cambiaran's stopped talking and looked over to the entrance, watching as Juliana walked in. This definitely was not a side of their leader that they saw often. She was murderous, even though the emotion wasn't showing on her face, you could literally feel it flowing under her skin. Slowly, the Roman seemed to sense that something was different and their attention shifted from the fights going on in the middle of the floor, the striding figure of the Fifth Guardian. Juliana stopped right in the middle of the arena and slowing gazed around as if analyzing everyone around her.
"Anyone want to fight?" She called, looking around. It was silent for a while as the Roman's exchanged looks or confusion before on, a boy with black hair and red eyes(probably a son of Mars).
"Fight you? Sorry, I don't hurt little girls." He snorted and his friends laughed as he made his way back towards them.
"Fine, I guess you're not up to it. Just go laugh with your little pack of hyenas over there and act like the gods' gift to the world." Juliana bit. That made the son of Mars stand still as his friends immediately stopped laughing, staring at her in shock. The son of Mars slowly turned around, eyes blazing.
"What did you just say?" He slowly asked. Juliana snorted, rolling her eyes.
"Don't worry, I didn't expect an idiot like you to understand a word I just said. I'm surprised you can even talk let alone fight with the size of your brain, if you can call it that." She insulted.
"You want to fight?" He demanded, reaching for your sword, "Because I wasn't going to fight you out of decency-" Juliana interrupted here, snorting.
"Decency? Please, you are the empty gas station of decency. I doubt there's a kind or semi-good bone in your body." Juliana figured.
"Fine! You want to fight? Then stop being a coward and fight!" He yelled, pulling his sword out if his sheath. Juliana grinned.
"Bring it on." She responded, "I don't need a weapon to beat you."
"You're going to regret that decision, Barbie." He stated.
"I doubt so." It was the last thing to be said before the fight began. Rushing forward with a yell, the Son of Mars (John was his name) charged towards Juliana, his sword raised. Right before he brought the sword down, Juliana side stepped, sending John off balanced as he plunged his sword towards the ground, sparks igniting as the metal and rock met. Growling, he turned and swung again at the girl but she just kept dodging and ducking.
"You call this fighting? You think you are so skilled? Well it's time I bring you down a few pegs and show you how a real fighter fights!" John roared before charging yet again at Julianna. Right as he reached her, Julianna stepped out of the way yet again; this sent him to the ground again. Growling in anger and slamming the palms of his hands to the ground, John stood up and turned to face Julianna.
"You are a coward and are weak! That is why you won't face me!" John yelled. All the Romans expected Julianna to react to that. But, she didn't even clench a muscle. Instead, she turned slowly and actually smiled.
"You are childish, soldier. Choosing inadequate words as you try to get a reaction out of your opponent. The way you apply that principle is a sign of how uneducated you are and how much you still need to learn." Julianna explained, stepping up towards the boy. John gritted his teeth.
"You act as if you are smarter and more experienced than me. You are what, seven? I doubt you've even been in the army long. You are a little girl in a pink dress and are not intimidating at all." Josh spat. Julianna was silent as she stared at him meticulously. She slowly raised an eyebrow which is definitely not the reaction John wanted.
"Oh. So it my age and size that makes you underestimate me? Well, you shouldn't judge someone on their outward appearances; appearances can be surprising. If you must though, I am the oldest guardian, as I have been a member of Chaos' army for the past 4,881 years and am 4,897 years old myself. I have millennia of experience and you have yet to even earn two decades which is not even one-hundredth of that. You have a lot to learn still so, yes, I believe that I have more experience and knowledge than you. But, if my form is what makes you so mad at me, then very well." And with that, a light overtook Julianna, a soft, yet strong light. When it disappeared, standing in Julianna's place was a tall, curly blond pulled back into a ponytail, tan-skinned, blue eyes girl, dressed in all black leather. Around her waist was a collection of knives and other weapons. On her back were two swords criss-crossed with black handles and flawlessly crafted Chaotic silver swords, edges sharp. Julia, the new Julianna, smiled slowly.
"This alright?" She inquired and smiled even more when John did not respond, in absolute shock that the once six year old girl had taken. Now, he was secretly really regretting ever taking her up on her challenge; what was he thinking? Julia pulled her two swords from her back and smiled, getting into a fighting stance, "Ready?" She inquired. John didn't answer, but Julia didn't wait for one before she sprung. John, not expecting her to be so fast, hurried to get out of the way, but was tripped as Julia suddenly came to a stop and put her foot out as John came by, causing him to trip yet again.
"You still seem to be having trouble though. Maybe my appearance wasn't all that changed everything..." John roared in fury and sprung up, swinging his sword back and forth rapidly, trying to get at least some type of hit on Julia. But, to everyone's amazement, Julia ducked and dodged every blow sent towards her, smiling all the while. Soon, after a dozen or so swings, John stopped, breathing heavily as all his strength seemed to go into those desperate moves. Julia, seeing her change, took pity on John and swiftly and gracefully jumped down to the ground and swiped a leg at John legs, jumping up to her former stance as John crashed to the floor, the air completely knocked out of him. Bending down into a crouch, Julia smiled down at the completely exhausted legionnaire.
"Are you done?" She wondered jokily, amused. John tried to muster up enough strength to get up from his vulnerable pose, but his arms gave out, that strength not being enough. Groaning in defeat, John nodded. Smiling, Julia stood up and looked out towards the Roman soldiers, a disappointed look on her face. Shaking her head slowly, she softly spoke, though her face carried throughout the silent arena.
"I was wrong about you Romans. I have always been told stories of your strength. How you fought your enemies with courage and determination worthy of the gods. How you stood together and united, using every skill and lesson you had ever been taught. How you laid down your life for your fellow soldier no matter who they were. I have always respected you for how you have always persevered and moved towards growing stronger. But, it seems I was wrong. You are not heroes; you are cowards hiding behind the backs of people far stronger and good-hearted then you. Your ancestor's were the heroes, and you disgrace all their sacrifices in the show of your arrogance and foolishness. You are weak and naive, unable to look past someone's outward appearance to see the true skill that lies beneath their seemingly fragile exterior." She spat.
"I have tried to be nice; I have tried to be the better person, but I have had enough. You are all unworthy to be called Romans and the ones that are true Roman's among you, are too scared and worried to speak up against what they know is wrong as well. If that isn't cowardice then I don't know what is. You do not deserved my respect and I am ashamed that all these years I have thought and seen you as a strong and united group, one full of true soldiers who are kind, smart, thoughtful, and observant. You are all just foolish and impudent children who need to learn to grow up, or get out of the real soldier's ways." Looking out at everyone, she continued.
"I am done acting like a child around you when we clearly already have enough babies here. So, from now on, this is how you will see me and this is how I will act. So get used to it because you have just lost the opportunity of gaining my soldiers and I as an ally. We are here on a mission and we will not fail our mission as it is the right thing to do, but don't expect us to be respectful towards you when you have yet to be respectful to us." And with that, Julia strode out of the arena, her warriors following after her, leaving the ashamed and remorseful Romans alone.
~~~~~~At Camp Half-Blood in New York~~~~~~
Still Narrator's(my) P.O.V.
Though it has been around six hundred years since Corina was last on earth and had heard her first stories of Camp Half-Blood, she sees now that it was even better than she expected it to be. Not even Percy's explanations were good enough. For the first time ever, Corina wished that she could've gotten to camp and live there, maybe even dying on a quest later on; just living at Camp for a little bit would have satisfied her. But, she did not regret joining Chaos' army; it was her home and her life and she loved being a part of such a big thing. Corina was pulled out of her thoughts as the conch shell was blow, signaling it was time for dinner. Reaching the pavilion, Corina walked towards the Vipengele table that Chaos had created before they first arrived.
He also created a black cabin made of chaotic obsidian, a rare rock found on Moaverra that, of course, is bigger than seen on the outside. Grabbing her plate, Corina went up and grabbed her favorite food: potatoes, green beans, gravy, roast beef, and stuffing. Taking a few of the green beans off her plate, she sacrificed them to Lord Chaos before going to sit down. Summoning root beer into her cup, Corina started on her food, smiling as memories of eating this for dinner as a child filled her mind. Corina's step-mom was one of those good step-mother's. She didn't care that Corina wasn't hers through blood, to her, through heart she was and she was just fine with that.
When Corina's dad died from cancer when she was seven, Karen, her step-mother, took full responsibility for her, raising Corina and her little brother, Liam, all by herself and teaching her the very lessons that still live with her today. Corina's smile turned bittersweet here. When Corina turned seventeen, a group of dracaenae ambushed her house and, before she could stop them, they killed her step-mom and little brother. She had just had a fight with her step-mom because a lot of accidents had recently been happening with her and she had just noticed an ability she had always had, but never recognized before: she could see the inner goodness and worth of others as well as the badness in them.
She suddenly remembered all the glances her parents always shared when she would comment on the worth in someone like how she would hear someone at school say someone was mean and cruel, and Corina would bring up things about people she didn't even know as if she really did: their home life, fears, sorrows, and every detail in their life that made them who they were, things that normal people never would see or notice. She figured out that her step-mom knew something and she had fought with her just that morning, begging her to tell her the truth, but her step-mom kept avoiding it(she didn't want me to leave, Corina soon realized later).
~~~~~~Flashback~~~~~~
Corina's P.O.V.
The monsters broke into my house and, right before my eyes, killed mom, without a single thought.
"No!" I screamed, tears streaming down my face as my mother fell to the floor, dead. Emotions of dread, sorrow, shame, and anger flared through me. I felt a strength in me that I had never felt before and, before I knew it, I went off. Racing towards the monsters who had killed my mom, I attacked them with a ferocity and skill that I didn't even know I possessed. I grabbed a kitchen knife and tried to kill the monsters with it, but I just couldn't injure them, not with a lamp, table, plates, cups, and so many other things. As I was resorted to physical punches and kicks, I kept the monsters off, but knew I wouldn't be able to continue like this any longer.
Salvation came as, when I raced out of the circle of monsters that had surrounded me, I saw two strangely glowing gold sheathed knives appear on the table. Not questioning it, I quickly picked them up, strapped the sheaths to my jeans, took the knives out, and attacked the monsters, relying on my intuitive skills. Slowly, I stabbed and sliced each monster, making them dissolve into a golden dust as they, to my surprise, actually died. Soon, they were all gone and I took a deep breath of relief, but that was short-lived as I heard a scream from upstairs; Liam's scream. Rushing upstairs, I made it to my brother's room and opened the door right as the monsters stabbed him with her staff and ripped it out. Liam gasped, grasping his stomach, before slumping to the floor.
"No! LIAM!" I screamed, the tears flooding my face. Furious, I raced towards the only monster left and swung and forth at it, trying to hurt it as much as I could. Finally, I stabbed it straight in the heart, causing it to burst into dust. As the dust slowly disappeared, I slowed my breathing and shoved the knives back into their sheaths, slowly dropping to the floor besides my gasping brother's body, his eyes searching wildly. Sobbing, I crawled towards him and cradled his head to my chest.
N-no, please L-Liam, d-don't leave me. Please!" I sobbed, staring down at my brother through blurry eyes, which I tried to clear as best as I could so I could see my little brother's face clearly enough. Liam smiled slowly, trying to hide his pain, though that failed.
"D-Don't worry, C-Corina. I-I-I'll be-be fine." He reassured, though it was clear he wouldn't be, "Is m-mom?" He asked, not able to finish the sentence. At Corina's sad look, Liam got his answer, "Oh Corina, I am s-sorry f-for e-ev-everything. I-" He swallowed here, finding it hard to talk now as he slowly started to fade. But he pushed through, wanting to say what he had to say.
"No Liam, don't start apologizing, you aren't going to die; you still have a whole life ahead of you. Please..." I whispered, sniffling. Liam smiled softly.
"We b-both know I'm g-going t-t-to d-die, 'Rina." He slightly joked, chuckling lightly before cutting off abruptly, it hurting too much to laugh. I chuckled softly though I didn't feel like laughing at all; it was for him, "I have a-always, b-been mean to everyone and I-I'm sor-ry. I was s-so confused, and-and angry, so I took it-" He stopped here, closing his eyes at the unimaginable pain and pushing back the desire to drift off. After a second, he opened his eyes again and stared into my eyes, "I took it o-out on e-ev-everyo-one else. Y-you have a-always b-been there f-for me, 'R-Rina. I l-love you-so much." Liam closed his eyes tightly here.
"I love you to Liam, I am so lucky to have had a brother like you. And I am so sorry for never giving you a chance to change, I-I just judged you as bad and I shouldn't have, you are good inside, I can-can feel it now." I pushed out, watching as a tear fell from my eye and landed on his cheek. He smiled at me again.
"You could always t-tell who a p-person really was. Y-you just s-sometimes le-let your e-emotions, g-get in the w-w-way." He gasped out, slowly losing control on the sleepiness moving through his body, "You are s-special 'Rina; don't ever let a-anyone t-tell you di-differently." He whispered, his voice hoarse. I smiled slightly, sniffling.
"I won't. You are amazing as well Liam, I wish you didn't leave me, but-but you have to. I am so proud of you and I love you so-so much." I pushed out, forcing the knot in my throat to go away. He smiled, satisfaction in his eyes.
"I always wanted you to say that." He whispered. It was silent as we stared into one another's eyes. Slowly, the life left Liam's eyes and his hand, which had been held in my hand the whole time, fell limp as his head rolled to the side, lifeless. I finally let the knot go and brought my head down to reset on Liam's, loud and heartbreaking sobs coming from my mouth. I lost my mom and I lost my brother. What was I going to do? Why couldn't I have died with them? After I don't know how long, I finally calmed and slowly sat up. They needed a proper burial. Standing up, I bent down and picked up my baby brother's body, holding it in my arms.
Making my way downstairs, I made into the backyard and made my way through our field, stopping at the big tree at the end of the field where our swing hung from. I can remember Liam and I playing over here on the swing, as dad and mom sat nearby, laughing at how we acted. Trying to push the memories away, I made my way back to the house. I stopped halfway through the living room, staring down at the lifeless body of my mother; the one who raised me and loved me, even if we weren't connected by blood; we were connected by heart and love.
Dropping to the floor, I found myself repeatedly whispering, "I'm sorry...I'm sorry...I'm sorry..." It was my fault; I never got to tell her how much I loved her, how much she meant to me. And now she was gone, and the last moment we had was spent in anger. Lifting her up gently, willing myself not to drop her, I turned and made my way into the backyard, making the same route I had made before with Liam. Grabbing a shovel from the barn, I started to dig, trying to ignore the tears that ran down my face; I would not stop now, I would continue until I was done. It was almost sundown by the time I had finished digging two big enough graves, silently, I picked up my baby brother's body and placed him in one of the graves.
Next, I took mom's body and placed it in the last one. Slowly, I shoveled the dirt into the graves. Finally, by almost the end of sundown, I was done. Walking over to our garden, I pulled out about two handfuls or so of roses and made my way back to the graves, replanting half of both into the tops of the graves. Pouring water onto them, I stepped back and stared down at the graves of the rest of my family, lying right next to the old grave of my father, created ten years before. My family, all here; I the only one left to live on this Earth. It was long after sundown by the time I finally got up. As I stood looking at the graves, I made a promise to myself: I will never again judge someone like I did Liam, and I will always tell the people I love that I love them, I will never give in to the possibility of it ever being too late to say that.
Giving one last glance at the three graves of my family, I whispered, "Goodbye." And with that, I turned and left into my house. After packing a bag, I spared the house that I had grown up in and been raised in, one last tearful glance, before turning and making my way down the road. I didn't know where I was going or what I was to do when I got there; all I knew was that I needed to find out where those monsters came from and, even more, where the weapons came from as well, I thought to myself, reaching down to grasp one of the knives in my hand before focusing back on the journey ahead of me.
~~~~~~end of flashback~~~~~~
Back to Narrator's(my) P.O.V.
Corina was shaken out of her thoughts as one of the members of the Vipengele group patted her shoulder.
"Chiron said it is time for the daily Olympian meeting." He explained. Corina nodded, standing up.
"Ok. And with that, she flashed herself to the Olympian Throne room.
~~~~~~At Camp Jupiter~~~~~~
Still Narrator's P.O.V.
As Julia was cleaning her room up, she turned as she heard a knock at her room door.
"Come in!" She called. Hearing the door open, Julia looked over to see who it was. Her heart fluttered as Austin walked into the room, closing the door behind him. After Julia had changed to her real physical state, all of the members of her group went back to the state they were in when they first came to Chaos' Army and Austin was no exception. As he was second in command of the group and always stood by Julia's side, so of course, he would stand by Julia's side in this situation, back to his sixteen year old form that Julia rarely saw. 6'2, lean figured, deep and dark sapphire eyes, blond hair, and tan skin, wearing a light blue shirt and jeans with sneakers. Julia tried to calm her heart. You'd think that after years of this, centuries even, I would get used to it, Julia thought to herself in frustration. Austin smiled at her lightly, making her heart beat even faster.
"Are you ok?" He wondered. Finally calming her heart and nervousness, Julia sighed, looking down at her half-folded clothes that she was in the middle of cleaning up.
"Yeah, I'm fine, it's just that-" She paused here, closing her eyes as sadness washed over her, "Percy always went on about the Romans. When I heard that we would be protecting them, I was excited to finally be meeting them. But, seeing how they are now...I'm disappointed." Julia revealed, sitting down on the edge of her bed. Walking over, Austin sat down next to her and squeezed her shoulder.
"Do you think you'll ever forgive them?" He wondered. Julia grinned at him.
"Oh, I don't have anything to forgive them for." At his surprised look, she continued to explain, "I'm not really mad at them, more disappointed. I only said that because the Romans hate being in debt and having someone they need to get to forgive so, saying that, makes them work even hard to make you forgive them." She finished, grinning mischievously at her idea. Austin laughed.
"Julia, you are amazing!" He exclaimed. Just as Julia was about to speak, she froze as Austin leaned over and kissed her lightly on the cheek, "To repay you for last time." He explained, reminding her of the first and only time she kissed him on the cheek, when Percy first arrived in the army, "It was about time I did after all these centuries." He stated, grinning. Standing up, he made it to the door before turning around to face the shell-shocked Julia, "Also, I came here to tell you that it is six o'clock and time for the daily Olympian meeting." And with that, he left. Shaking her head to get rid of the shock and daze in her mind, Julia quickly flashed up to the throne room on Olympus.
Song I'm listening to right now: 'The news'(yeah, I just got done cleaning my room before racing down to finish writing this, so I have yet to turn on any music and the t.v. in the living room is on, so...).
YES, I'M DONE FINALLY! This chapter took forever to actually start and finish! But, a few weeks ago, I got a huge flow of inspiration for this story and couldn't stop writing so I finished it! I hoped you loved it, I loved writing it. Sorry about how sad Corina's flashback scene was, I didn't plan on doing that, but the idea came and I just couldn't help with writing it. Well, I have to go now, I'll try to update again soon, I've already started on the next chapter, I just need to continue that stride and, hopefully, finish it soon. Well, I should go now, bye!
