It was a cold day in Salt Lake City. I'd just gotten off work and I was feeling tired and drained. Working with machines has taken years from me. I parked my car in the garage and walked to my front door. I opened the door to my daughter sitting on the couch.
"Dad!"
She sprinted towards me and I lifted her in the air and then hugged her. I immediately felt better. As I put her down I looked up to see our babysitter, Clair, preparing dinner.
"You're home early."
"Yeah, Dave picked up some extra hours." I smiled at her, handing her two $100 bills.
"I'll see you next week." She said as she gratefully took the notes, looking down simultaneously, "Bye Lizzy!"
"Bye Clair!" Elizabeth said, going to hug her.
I followed Clair to the door and locked it behind her. She was a great sitter, always willing to pick up extra hours. I'm so grateful for her. Ever since Mary disappeared she's acted like a real mother to Elizabeth, picking up shifts without warning. A part of me thinks she's only doing it for the money, which I wouldn't blame her, but I really think she just feels sorry for us, or maybe just Elizabeth. It was hard enough after-
Before I could finish my thought, Elizabeth interrupts me
"Dad what's for tea I'm hungry."
"Oh sweetie, looks like rice and potatoes"
"Agaaainn?" Elizabeth sighs with disappointment, but more fustraitment.
My heart sinks every time she sounds like that. I know I should just suck it up, but I can't help it.
I sigh, "Why don't we just get takeout? How bout we go to fazbears?"
"Yay! Can I see Foxy Dad?"
"Only from the booth, I don't want you touching the animatronics, remember"
"I know, I know"
Before I knew it Elizabeth had run to her room to get her shoes and I was packing up what Clair had prepared. Seems like a waste but, she shouldn't mind too much.
I hold the door open for Elizabeth as we enter Fazbears Pizza.
"You're back early" I hear a soft voice say from behind the till. I turn around and see David trying to fix the register. I lead Elizabeth over to him and reach over the counter to help him.
"What are you eatin tonight folks?" David says with a grin on his face
"We'll just get a large peperoni for the both of us"
"Dad can I have a juice please?" Elizabeth asks with an excited look on her face.
"I suppose" I grin at her
David gives us our table number and we go sit down. While we get comfortable, we can see Freddy and the gang pile on stage to start their second performance of the night.
"LOOK DAD IT'S FOXY" Elizabeth shouts, loud enough for everyone in the room to hear.
Freddy starts to sing, as the rest of the animatronics play their instruments with little to no enthusiasm.
"William-"
I turn around to see Henry, my work buddy since '80.
"I thought I'd show you this while you're not busy." He says with a stern look on his face
I look at Henry, then to Elizabeth. Seeing that she was still infatuated with Foxy I took the paper out of Henry's hands. It was another animatronic we we're working on for our new restaurant joint. We started thinking of ideas since Mary, to give Elizabeth something to take her mind off everything.
"It's perfect, Henry. When did you do this?"
"I've been drawing up ideas to surprise you for weeks. There's just a few small details that you shouldn't-"
"Hey sweetie, look at this" I show the drawings of the animatronic to Elizabeth, cutting off Henry.
"B-A-B-Y?" She reads the top of the page "She looks just like me-"
Before Elizabeth could finish Henry rips the page out of my hands and signals me to the back.
Confused, I look at Elizabeth, "I'll be back soon sweets, don't go anywhere."
I get up and follow Henry to the only room in the building that doesn't have a camera.
"What was all that for?" I snark at him
"You can't just go showing people this, even your daughter."
He places the drawing on the table and points at a small detail I seemed to have missed.
"Shit." I say, almost speechless. "What happened to 'never doing this again?'"
"From now on, I'm not involved with this. It will be your joint, your business, your ass on the line, okay?"
"Then what was the point of this huh? You have so much potential and you're just gonna waste it?"
"It's a parting gift, Will."
I looked at him shocked. Never in a million years did I think he would pull something like this.
"You have to be kidding me-"
"After Michael I'm never gonna be the same, I expected the same with you."
"I told you what happened. It was an accident and you know it, you were there."
"YOU TRIED TO KILL ME." Henry says with tears forming in his eyes. "It wasn't enough that our worked kill your own son? You went after your best friend as well? What did you expect of me Will? I trusted you!"
I stand speechless for a moment, until I can finally get a word out.
"No." I say looking at the ground.
In a matter of seconds the lostness I felt turned to rage, disgust, pure anger.
"No, really? You just wanted me to go to prison? It wasn't just my fault you know. The springlocks failed. That's YOUR job Henry." I shout at him, moving closer and closer to him, causing him to back up. I feel the pocket knife in my pocket and instantly flip it up at him.
"Okay, calm down Will." Henry says with his voice all shaky.
"What? do you just want me to let you tell people?"
"If I were gonna tell people, I would've by now and you know that." Henry says softly, still backing away from the knife."
"There are no cameras in here Henry."
"Will stop it, you're overreacting."
I press the knife against his throat, looking straight into his eyes. I debate doing it for a split second but suddenly, I hear the door go to open. I quickly flip the knife back and hide it in my sleeve.
"I know you work here Will but you can't be in here after your shift."
To my relief, it's just David.
"Sorry Dave, I'll be out in a sec."
"Thanks man, also Henry we've been looking for you for ages, I'm going on a break so you're on the till."
Henry follows Dave out of the room and I take the paper from the desk and stuff it into my pocket.
When I walk out to Elizabth I see her already eaten most of the pizza and looking about ready to leave. I pick her up and walk to the exit.
"Put it on my tab" I say glaring at Henry and I slam the door behind me
