"August, hurry up, sweetheart!" Yelled his mother from the car.

Five year old August and his family were about to take a trip to Michigan.

"Yeah, buddy, hurry up! I wanna get on the road before the traffic gets too bad!" Yelled his father.

"Ok, Mommy and Daddy, I'll be there in just a minute!" He shouted back.

August gathered his clothes and his other belongings, and made sure his eye glasses were on.

After everything was done, he ran out to the waiting car and hopped in.

"Alright everyone buckled in?" August's mom, Sarah, asked everyone. They all nodded.

"Alright, our family road trip begins..." he paused, and then put his foot slightly on the gas pedal, "Now!" He lightly shouted and all three of them laughed.

They pulled out of the driveway of their Indiana home, and departed for the interstate that led to the Michigan border.

Sarah, August's mother was a beautiful woman. She had long dark red hair, and eye glasses like August. She didn't like wearing formal clothes like dresses, so she was wearing a t-shirt and jeans.

Ben, August's father, was a tough man. He spent 2 years in Iraq fighting for his country. He had short black hair, eye glasses like the other two family members, and wore his US Army cargo pants along with a United States t-shirt.

August, the only child of the two, was a very small boy. He had long blonde hair the flowed down his head, and he wore eye glasses like his parents. He wore a sweatshirt with the logo of his favorite basketball team, The Dallas Mavericks, on it, and he wore long khakis. Since he was the only child, his parents liked to spoil him. But that usually didn't make him feel better about being the only other family member. He doesn't mind being the only child, but he has always wanted other people in his life. He never got to meet any of his grandparents because his mother's parents unfortunately passed away, and his father's parents left the country some time ago, since they didn't agree with their son's dispatch to Iraq. But being with his parents made him very happy, since they always liked to spend time with him, despite being so busy with their jobs.

"Remind me to send a post card to my boss once we get to the cottage. She gave me this whole week off. I guess they didn't need anyone else at Toyota this week." Ben randomly brought up, most likely trying to start small talk since it was almost a 9 hour trip to Traverse City.

It didn't work, as nobody else said anything.

Ben sighed on defeat, and then an idea came to his head.

He got in the middle compartment of the vehicle and brought out a disc.

He placed it into the player and music started playing. It was the song that they always sang together. One Foot by Walk the Moon.August smiled happily, and started singing, as did Ben and Sarah.

Not a soul up ahead and nothing behind,There's a desert in my blood and a storm in your eyes,Am I the king of nothing at all? Then you're the queen of nothing at all.Well I remember the fight and I forget the pain,I got my hand in your pocket and my key on your chain,Am I the king of nothing at all? Then you're the queen of nothing at all.Oh, through the wilderness,You and I we're walking through the emptiness.Oh, my heart is a mess,Is it the only defense against the wilderness?Cross my heart and hope to die,Taking this one step at a time,Got your back if you got mine. One foot in front of the other. One foot in front of the other. One foot in front of the other. One foot in front of the other. All that we have is each other. One foot in front of the other. They all sang and danced to that song twice, and were happy after they did. It always lightened to mood for them all.

On their trip, they stopped at multiple places, their favorite being the Cabela's in Dundee. They went over Saginaw bridge, and stopped at a rest area to have a picnic.

Then later, they stopped at a restaurant to have dinner. On their way out, they took a picture at a lumberjack statue outside of the establishment, August being set atop Ben's shoulders. After they had a little more fun, they got in the car.

"This trip has been really fun, Mommy and Daddy!" August said joyfully to Ben and Sarah.

They both smiled at his adorableness, and Ben replied, "Well, in a few hours, we'll be in Traverse City at our cottage by the big lake! Imagine how fun that'll be, buddy!" He ruffled August's hair a bit, and he giggled.

"Alright, only three more hours to go!" Sarah said, and they once again departed.

An hour and a half later...

It was 9:30 outside and it was dark outside. They exited the interstate 30 minutes prior, and were now on a side road.

August was really tired and was about to go to sleep. However, he tried his best to stay awake.

"It's ok, bud, go ahead and sleep, we'll be there in less than two hours." Sarah leaned back and said.

August nodded and laid down on the seat. But got startled a little bit when his father spoke.

"What the hell is this guy doing?"

He was looking in the rear view mirror. August looked back. Indeed, someone was tailgating them.

"Come on, don't do this shit." Ben whispered to himself.

Ben looked back at the car that was tailgating them.

"Slow down!" He yelled.

"Ben!!! Oh my God!" They both heard Sarah yell.

Suddenly, they all felt weightless.

It was then that they realized they drifted off the cliff.

None of them could get a word out before the car began tumbling as they were all getting thrashed around.

It was about six seconds later that the car finally stopped and came to rest on its top.

Ten minutes later...

August woke up from his temporary loss of consciousness, and put his hand to his head and coughed. He unbuckled his seatbelt and landed on the ground with a thud.

He looked around and noticed that all their belongings were scattered everywhere. He carefully crawled up to the front of the car.

He shook his parents, "Mommy, Daddy, please wake up."

Neither of them answered. Neither of them were moving. Neither of the were breathing.

"Mommy, Daddy, please wake up, I'm scared." August asked again, but to no avail

"Please, please wake up!" He asked again.

They still don't respond in any way.

August began crying.

"Mommy, Daddy, please wake up! I beg you! please!" He shouted again.

He crawled out of the mangled car and yelled up the cliff, "Please someone help!y mommy and daddy are hurt! Please hear me!" He yelled, but his small voice couldn't be heard. He tried climbing up the cliff to get help, but the cliff was too steep and he fell down. He kept trying and trying, sobbing harder every time he fell back down.

He fell down again, and began sobbing hysterically. He curled up on the ground, and cried for a long time.

He then made his way over to one of the many trees in the forest and curled up again, and cried himself to sleep, knowing no one would be there to help him.

Author Note

Yay, one chapter done. Though I feel like I rushed it, but I'm not sure if I did. Please tell me what I did wrong and how I can fix it in the comments. I will keep writing this story tonight and hopefully have a few more chapters out by 2 AM. Goodbye, for now.
