It was Tuesday, March 7th, 2016, and rain was pouring outside Honest's bedroom window. "Maybe it'll let up by the time I get to school," she silently wished. Honest looked over at the alarm clock sitting in the cavity in her wall where a TV would go if she had one. It read "5:29am". Honest went to sleep with Shadow for thirty minutes until it was time to get ready for school. Akane was waiting for her this time.
"Hey, Honest," the orange cat whispered to her. She became her girl form with a quiet pop. Honest motioned for her to scoot over so they could both sleep with Shadow.
Soon Shadow's alarm clock rang as well. He yawned and stretched, and sat up to go turn the alarm off. He pulled his legs to the left and tried to stand up.
"Ah!" he yelped, startled. Instead of feeling the bed spread underneath him, he felt skin. He pulled his legs away and watched in horror as not one, but two cats sat up in front of him.
"Oh," Honest said. Both her and Akane beamed and said, "Good morning!"
Shadow, Honest, and Akane were walking to school. It was still raining, much to Honest's dismay.
Honest was bringing cupcakes for a school function that she wouldn't be attending. She wanted to do something for it by bringing the dessert to make up for her not being there. It was raining, so Honest covered them in tin foil to protect them. However, she had not accounted for the wind, and it had blown the foil off the box, and she watched it sail away in the wind. So, the cupcakes were rained on, but hopefully people would still like them. They were vanilla with chocolate icing and sprinkles that looked like flowers, since spring was coming soon.
Now, it was March 10th, 2017, and it was lunchtime. All 5 or 6 hundred students in the high school got in one line, and it was forever until Honest got her tray, and she was one of the earlier people to get to the lunchroom. When she left the cafeteria at 12:15, she had a full twenty minutes to sit outside and wait for the bell. Her and Shadow sat near the front doors, so they were some of the first people to go inside when the bell rang.
Honest noticed that Jet was still sitting at his usual spot outside the gym when the bell rang, so he would get to the classroom later to grab his stuff. He had a virtual class in the room Honest had Spanish in before lunch, so he left his stuff in there so he could grab it later. He usually rushed and got it before Honest could have time to arrive because he didn't want to run into her.
This time, however, Honest got to the room first. Actually, he had rushed really fast this time since he was behind, so they reached the door at exactly the same time. Honest knew he was behind her, so she opened the door for him. Her heart was pumping so fast. Maybe he would just grab his binders and leave really quick and walk past her, but he didn't. Him and her reached the desk at almost the same time.
Honest set her backpack down beside her chair. Him and her had the same computer, as she had found out before when he forgot to logout of his account that one chapter. Jet didn't seem to be too startled when he saw her there.
"Hello," she said. The word just slipped out of her mouth.
"I-uh, I just need to move my stuff.." he mumbled as he began putting his binders in his backpack. Usually he ran in there and got his things before she could meet him there, but that day he had been slow to get up when the bell rang.
Honest wanted to say something more to him, but she couldn't speak. Eventually he got his things and left. Honest watched him go out the door and to the left before sitting down at her computer. She made the most pained expression ever and planted her forehead on her keyboard.
Scourge looked over at her. "Honest, you're okay, right?" Honest didn't move, so Scourge lifted her head up by her ears.
"Was that Jet?" He asked. Honest's cheeks were red.
"Yes it was!" She threw her head down again, typing the symbol " " into the username blank. Scourge didn't look at the screen, but instead reached over her to poke Espio on the shoulder. "What's wrong with Honest?"
"Jet," responded Espio. He turned to Scourge. Then he saw the heart on her screen. "She has a crush on him?"
They both looked at Honest before bursting into laughter. "You like, Jet? He's, like, a bird-brain!" exclaimed Scourge.
"He's so greedy. The only way he'd like you back is if you had money," Espio pointed out, trying not to laugh after his previous outburst.
"And that laugh of his- 'blahaha, not bad!'" Espio couldn't keep the laughs from coming out at Scourge's joke, and he was bawling. Clouds of dark smoke started puffing out of Honest's head.
She lifted her face from the alt key. "Trust me, I know he's a bird-brain, I know he's greedy. I know he has a terrible laugh, but... I-I don't know why I like him, but... oh, what am I saying? I don't like him. Even if I did, he'd never like me back..." Honest pulled a tissue out of nowhere and began blowing her nose. Eventually Scourge and Espio lost interest. You can only tell so many Jet jokes until you start running out of lines to say.
The next day, Honest was looking forward to seeing him again as he put up his stuff. What a wonderful routine it would be to see him everyday. When she was almost to the classroom, she saw him dart into the room. Now all she had to do was go inside and meet him. Or maybe she should stand at the door and say "have a nice day" to him as he left? She was debating this for so long that Jet had already packed his things and was out the door, walking down the stairs nearby.
What? Oh, come on!
Honest hung her head and went to sit at her computer. When she sat down, she logged in quickly and waited for the computer to load. Scourge turned to her. "You just missed him! Jet was just here."
"Please don't tell him I like him," Honest said frightfully.
"No, do you want me to?"
"No! Of course not. I don't like him after all." Scourge looked on with curiosity as her lip began to quiver and her eyes widened. Honest held up a hand and looked away. She then laid her head down.
Scourge turned back to his computer with a shrug. Honest longed for eighth period when her and Shadow could go outside under the pretense that she and him were going to take pictures. In reality they would be sitting on the edge of a bridge across the road, taking pictures of the same view of streaming water below them and talking about their day.
Eventually that time did come, and Honest and Shadow shivered against the cold breeze and talked. Honest was shivering even though she had her orange, fleece jacket on.
"I like Jet," Honest said plainly. It was the first thing the two had exchanged with each other.
"I know," Shadow said plainly as well. "What I don't know is why I feel so sad about it."
"What?" Honest asked, sounding startled. Shadow nodded solemnly. Honest lurched out and grabbed him by his shoulders. "You don't feel sad, Shadowkins! You don't feel anything!" Honest laughed to dismiss what he had told her.
Shadow scoffed. "You know I feel things. And right now I feel sad. I'm sad because I don't like seeing you go crazy over other people. Especially a greedy, bird-brained hawk."
"But, but I feel sad, too! I know I look happy, even giddy, sometimes, but I also feel sad. I know Jet doesn't like me back, but I just can't let him go!" Honest wasn't crying, but she was just very angry and confused, and wanted Shadow to help her. She was also still shivering. Her jacket didn't have a hood to break the wind like Shadow's did.
Shadow just crossed his arms and looked down into the water. "Just don't let it get to you. That's all I can tell you. And-" He put one side of his coat around Honest. "Quit shivering, it's annoying."
Honest smiled and planted her face on his shoulder. "You won't quit being nice for a second, will you?"
When Shadow didn't say anything, Honest lifted her head. "I feel a lot better now. And then we can go home, drink warm tea, and play the Hatsune Miku on the PS3, right?"
Shadow laughed. "Yes, we can."
(Ughhh... Can I say Jet died at the end of this story? No? Okay, then he still throws great parties, but he doesn't go to school anymore because he thinks it's pointless.)
