Sonic X: The Promised Date.

Author's Note: Just a quick one shot that can either be canon to Sonic X: Back to Earth or not. I'll leave that choice to you.

Plus the Sonic IDW Issue 31 has been delayed to September 16th, but I have a feeling it will end up delayed to the 30th which will delay Issue 32 to sometime in Octobor. Otherwise we would've had Issue 31 tomorrow, but it can't be helped.

Anyway, happy reading!

I don't own any rights to Sonic the Hedgehog. Only Sega does.

Sonic was hiding behind a tree on a beautiful flower field near his village. It was one of the places he usually went to, either to relax or spend time with his friends. He loved it here. It was one the places he missed during his time on Earth. Except today it was a place that had sadness, and the sound of someone crying didn't help at all. That someone was Amy Rose, his obsessive self-proclaimed girlfriend.

He was gently clutching the bouquet of flowers in his arms, pink and white which were beautiful, as well as a flower crown that was beautifully hand-made. Yet he was hesitating and normally the blue hedgehog didn't approach the pink hedgehog for forgiveness or dates as much. It didn't help that he was once again the cause of her being so upset, and not in the usual way.

'How did I mess up so badly? What was it that I did wrong?' The normally cheerful and optimistic hero thought to him.

How did this happen indeed, well, it all started earlier in the day.

Two hours earlier...

"I can't believe I signed up for this." Sonic grumbled as he tapped his foot in annoyance, his arms crossed to his chest, standing in front of Tails' workshop, with his best friend watering Cosmo's plant which was really starting to bloom ever since the blue hedgehog had given the young fox the single seedling that was what remained of their late friend.

Sonic had, grudgingly, agreed to go on a date with Amy who, excited, remembered the last time and warned him not to be late or run off again, or else. He hesitantly promised and asked her to meet with him at the workshop once he cleared things out.

"Well, you did promise, and normally you never break your promises." Tails pointed out sheepishly.

"Yeah, but still..." Sonic sighed. "I really do care about her, but...I'm not ready to settle down and stand still. I want to run, go on adventures, and live life of freedom. At the same time, I can't count how many dates I had to break off and I feel bad about it."

Unaware of the two brothers, Amy was skipping away happily until she noticed halfway from where she stood, and saw her 'boyfriend' looking grumpy and, unfortunately, she only caught some of the sentence, from the 'I'm not ready' and paused in her steps. She then hidden herself behind a tree as, while suddenly shocked by this and beginning to quickly think that maybe Sonic really didn't care about her, she felt her heart begin to break.

Growling in frustration, Sonic placed his hands on his head and complained. "Why do girls have to be so complicated!?"

"Hmph! Well, you men are just as complicated and oblivious!" Amy pouted angrily in a whisper, feeling insulted to be called complicated.

Tails smiled sympathetically at his older brother, muttering. "I wish I knew, but even I can't figure it out. Sorry, Sonic."

That made the hidden Amy face-palm herself. Ugh, even Tails didn't get it.

That made the teenage hero sigh, instantly hearing the sadness in his little bro's voice and lowered his arms. A pang of guilt hung heavily in his chest, feeling the sense of unfairness that, in awkward circumstances, he still had Amy, while Tails...he lost Cosmo, all because of his actions. Sonic didn't think he should deserve what the fox cub had lost.

"I'm sorry, Tails. It's just...it ain't fair that you lost Cosmo, and while I'm not a romantic kind of guy, I keep hurting Amy's feelings." Sonic muttered, forcing himself to turn to Tails who smiled sadly.

"It's not your fault, Sonic. Cosmo was told she had to sacrifice herself, and I didn't want to do that. But I didn't have a choice either." The young kit replied.

"It's still my fault, though. If I hadn't sent the Chaos Emeralds into Space, Cosmo would've still be here with us. You should be jealous of me, li'l bro, and angry with me. It's not fair."

"What are you saying?" Tails asked, puzzled.

Sonic sighed, running a hand through his quills. "What I'm saying is that...maybe I should break things off with Amy and tell her that me and her...it'll never work out. Just hope I don't lose our friendship."

Amy felt her heart shatter and only managed to hear the breaking off part, because not only what he heard sounded so cruel in her opinion, but made her begin to believe that she finally understood that Sonic never loved her. Reduced to tears, she silently ran away crying, not hearing the rest of the conversation.

"That'll only hurt her even more!" His little brother protested, walking up to him, with a pleading look as his smile faded. "Sonic, you shouldn't give up your happiness for me. I don't want you to be sad. It's not your fault! Don't do things for my sake. I miss Cosmo, but I don't want you or Amy to be breaking up because of me."

"Then what do I do?" Sonic asked helplessly, bending on one knee and gently placed his hands onto Tails' shoulders. "I'm stuck, Tails, and if I can't figure this out on my own, then I'm the lousiest hedgehog in the universe!"

Tails wished he knew the answer. It hurt him that Sonic felt so horrible that the older adoptive brother was willing to give up his happiness to be equal with the young cub, and what hurt even more was that the blue hedgehog felt useless and didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings.

"Maybe...you should go and pick her some flowers? Maybe even make her a flower crown?" The two-tailed kit shrugged cluelessly, thinking that would be a very lame idea.

Apparently Sonic didn't think so, because he instantly stood up and said, perking up. "Great idea, Tails! If there's one thing I know girls love, it's flowers. Luckily I love flowers too since they're beautiful. Amy will love them!"

Tails rubbed the back of his head, unable to believe his suggestion was quickly agreed upon. Then again, his big brother was right. "Happy to help."

Sonic winked with a thumbs up, before turning around and then realized something, his eyes becoming furrowed. "Speaking of Ames, where is she? She should've been here by now."

"You don't think...something bad happened to her, do you?" Tails asked, worriedly.

That instantly made Sonic worried. If there was one real threat that would put his self-proclaimed girlfriend into danger, there was one man he knew that would use her against him. He had to find her, quick.

"AMY!" Sonic exclaimed, and without giving much a goodbye to Tails since he knew he had rescue is 'girlfriend' if she was in trouble, sped off down the road, leaving behind a trail of blue streak.

Staring out at where his best friend had run off, the two-tailed fox muttered with a shrug. "...Or maybe there's a different reason?"

"Amy! Amy, where are you?" Sonic called out, racing through the village and fields in search for his missing or, Chaos forbid, kidnapped, girlfriend, but surprisingly couldn't find her. He first tried out her house, but found it ominously empty. He asked Vanilla, who told him that she hasn't seen him and that Cream was out playing in the fields with Cheese.

The blue hedgehog asked around, only to be met with negative responses, and the fact that there were no signs of an attack only made him worry even more. It wasn't like Amy to simply vanish. Then a more alarming thought formed in his mind; what if she overheard parts of his and Tails' conversation and neither one noticed, and being the slightly delusional pink hedgehog that she was, came to a conclusion that he never cared about her.

That thought somehow, in a scary way, broke his heart. If that was the case, then Sonic had utterly destroyed their relationship, and felt the crushing weight of having lost another friend, again by his own actions. While Amy was, hopefully, still alive, it didn't help matters at all. She may never want to speak to him again. What she would leave him for good, by moving away and he'd never see her again?

"Amy, please, tell me where you are! I'm worried about you! C'mon, Ames, say something!" Sonic pleadingly cried out, stopping in the middle of the field as he desperately looked in all directions. "I didn't run off this time! I was waiting for you! Are you okay?"

No response.

Feeling so lost with no reply, the heavy weight of not being able to find her, he fell onto his knees and founded the ground with his fist in frustration, guilt and the painful ache in his chest. Eventually he stopped, taking deep breaths to try and calm down. Maybe it wasn't too late. He may still have a chance. Sonic didn't normally react so much towards her, but lately he began to feel closer to her than ever before. Like when there was a crowd around, he'd feel embarrassed over Amy being too clingy towards him.

But alone...while he still felt a bit embarrassed, he kind of enjoyed it. Plus, she did do a lot of things for him; she saved his life more times than he could count even though he saved her life more than she did to him, she made that beautiful shell bracelet, he did like to hang out with her whenever they were alone.

Sonic didn't know why, and while it did feel silly for him to admit it, but maybe...he really did love her. But as he said to Tails, he wasn't ready to settle down yet. He definitely didn't like to stand still for long, either. What hurt even more was that he hurt her feelings without even counting, or even knowing. He had to make it up to her, and keep his promise on that date, no matter how awkward it was.

He then remembered what Tails suggested and, while Sonic was still worried about Amy, maybe the bouquet and flower crown would make things up. Seeing that he was surrounded by beautiful pink and white flowers, Sonic stood up, knowing what he had to do.

"Well, better get to work. Just hope Amy will love them." Sonic said to himself, before zooming around collecting the right amount of flowers as he did. First he made the bouquet since that was easy.

Next he set to work on the flower crown, mixing up the white and pink one by one, doing his best to not mess it up and to memorize how Cream managed to do it. It was a clumsy work, but Sonic was determined to finish it and not mess up.

An hour and a half later, after a couple of grumbling for messing up a few times, and at the slow progress, Sonic finally finished the flower crown and wiped his forehead, marveling at his handy work. It wasn't Cream perfect, but even she would approve. Amy will definitely love this.

"Okay, now to go find her and see if she's okay." Sonic declared, scooping up the flowers and was about to resume his search when a voice called up from his left.

"Find who, Big Blue?"

Looking up, Sonic raised an eye-brow to find Rouge hovering down towards him as he asked back. "What're you talking about, Rouge?"

What caught him slightly off-guard was that the normally tricky bat looked at him with a fuming expression.

"Are you looking for a new girlfriend?" She questioned.

"What's that supposed to mean?" The blue hedgehog replied, before a thought came into mind and asked, with some bit of hope. "Hey, have you seen Amy?"

"Oh, is that who you are searching for?" Rouge scoffed, landing and folded her arms to her chest, glaring at the teenager who sweat dropped. "You're not trying to lie to me, are you?"

"No. Why?" Sonic asked, nervously.

"Mm-hm. Try telling her that." She responded darkly.

"Where is she?" He asked, feeling his stomach drop.

"She out on the other fields, crying and blubbering about how YOU dumped her!" Rouge angrily yelled, stomping up to the blue hedgehog gasped, backing away a little in fear.

"W-what!? I didn't dump her!" Sonic protested.

Rouge raised an eyebrow. "Oh no? Then how is it that I overheard her saying that you called her complicated, not ready to settle down and enjoy your ridiculous freedom, that you would break off with her? You're the most self-absorbed and selfish guy I've ever met!"

That raised his guilt at it's peak, as Sonic realized that his earlier theory that she overheard him and Tails and came to such a conclusion that Rouge confirmed was true. He stood there frozen in shock, horror, dismay and...heavy guilt and sorrow. The distraught blue hedgehog lowered his gaze, carefully clutching the flowers in his arms. He hadn't meant to hurt her feelings.

"She misunderstood. I said that maybe I should because it wasn't fair on Tails, but he told me not to. He didn't want me to give it all up just for him and he's right..." Sonic muttered, feeling his eyes form tears. He'd done again. The hero had inadvertently hurt Amy's feelings. His heart broke, because he had broken her heart. He squeezed his eyes shut and unconsciously shed a couple of tears. "I didn't mean to hurt her...!"

Just seconds before she could bonk him on the head, Rouge stopped herself to see the actual hurt Sonic the Hedgehog, the normally cocky and cheerful young hero, was displaying due to his actions. She then could see that he had been looking for Amy, attempting to give her some flowers to cheer her up.

Seeing Sonic like this actually ached the bat's heart as she realized that Amy jumped to conclusions again. Sighing, Rouge gently placed hand onto his right cheek, making him look up at her with is emerald eyes.

"Then you'd better get your butt over the fields before she runs off again, Sonic. Hopefully she isn't going anywhere." She informed him.

Despite the oddness of Rouge giving him gentle comfort, Sonic knew that she was right. He had to get to Amy fast before he lost her forever.

"Right. Thanks, Rouge." Sonic replied, wiping away his tears. "When she didn't turn up where we'd supposed to met, I was really worried."

"Amy is certainly lucky to have you, Sonic. Even if you boys are gullible towards us women." Rouge replied, smirking.

Sonic laughed, "I'm not gonna argue with that. I've learned a long time ago to never, ever, understimate girls. When it comes to strength and determination, you make us guys look like babies."

Rouge giggled, as she began to walk away. "Out of all of the guys in the universe, you're sometimes mostly smart. Unlike a certain echidna."

"Yeah, well, that Knucklehead is clueless over a lot of things." Sonic smirked. "It's no wonder you two guys butt heads all the time. I'm kinda surprised you actually have a crush on him."

That made the bat pause, blushing heavily as she quickly denied. "I do not!"

The blue hedgehog chuckled, "Whatever you say, Rouge. See you later, I've got Amy to find."

Before Rouge could glare at him, Sonic already ran off to find his self-proclaimed girlfriend, leaving her to grumble and pout, folding her arms once more.

"I can't be that noticeable!" She complained.

Half an hour later, Sonic found the fields that Rouge directed him, which as luck would have it, was the same beautiful fields he normally visited a lot times to either relax or hang out with his friends. Looking around, it hadn't taken the blue hedgehog long to before he spotted the girl he was looking for.

Hiding behind a tree as he tried to figure out how to approach her, the sight and sound of Amy Rose crying as she knelt on the ground, plucking away the petals of a flower she picked up, shattered him from inside out. Sonic felt so heavy in guilt, he looked away and leaned against the tree, not sure what to do.

Which lead to the present day situation he was in right now.

Present Time...

'How did I mess up so badly? What was it that I did wrong?' The normally cheerful and optimistic hero thought to him.

He then remembered almost instantly and sighed shakily. Sonic never felt so guilty in his life other than the time when he failed to save Cosmo, and the only thing left of her was a seed that he'd given to the heart-broken Tails. He hadn't meant to hurt Amy's feelings so badly, even if it was a misunderstanding. He didn't normally rehearse his words, but he knew that if he wasted more time, she'd end up leaving...maybe forever.

Taking a deep breath to brace himself, Sonic steeled him up before narrowing his eyes with determination to set things right, and go on that promised date. The blue hedgehog emerged from the tree, hiding the flowers behind his back and slowly approached the sobbing Amy who plucked the last petal of her flower.

"Hey, Amy. Didn't expect to find you here." Sonic gently greeted.

Hearing his voice, Amy blinked in surprise, slowly looking over her shoulder to find her 'boyfriend' stand there. "S-Sonic?"

"Um...I was waiting for you at Tails' workshop." He began.

"I know, and you were complaining about me...!" She bitterly replied, making him flinch in fright with a sweat drop. "I heard everything you said, Sonic. How you...how you're not ready to settle down or stand still. That you want to break things off with me, calling me complicated, all you want to do is run and go on adventures. You're the most selfish guy I've ever met, even though you like to hang out with everybody else, but never want to spend time with me!"

Sonic bit his lip in guilt.

"You never really cared about me! I don't know...I don't know why I even bother! And now you're here, expecting me to forgive you!?" Amy continued, crying even harder. "All you ever do is ignore me, like I don't even exist!"

Now he felt his heart utterly break, close to breaking down himself.

"Give me one good reason why you're here, Sonic the Hedgehog! Are you here to officially break up with me? Well if you are, then don't bother! I'm leaving the village tomorrow, for good!" The pink hedgehog declared.

'No...please, no!' The blue hedgehog thought. He gasped as Amy stood up angrily and in heart-break and began to storm off.

"Amy, wait!" Sonic pleaded, quickly grabbing her arm, stopping her in her tracks. "Don't go! Please, don't go...! Don't leave me...! I...I...I love you."

"...Huh?" Amy blinked, slowly turning around, not sure if she heard right. "Sonic...what did you...?"

"I love you, Amy...! I LOVE YOU!" Sonic babbled, crying himself as he couldn't deny his own feelings anymore, and didn't even bother. "I'm sorry...I'm so sorry that I hurt your feelings over and over again...I was a jerk, but I never stopped caring about you. I really do care about you, and that's what I said, before I said I'm not ready to settle down."

Amy remained frozen, never having seen Sonic cry before. It scared her a little.

The blue hedgehog sniffled, continuing. "I didn't mean to hurt you, Ames. I was scared of...of losing you. If anything happened to you, I'd never forgive myself. The only reason I said that maybe I should break things off is because it wasn't fair on Tails who lost Cosmo. But he told me not to. He didn't want us to stop being like this just for his sake. So I agreed, and I...I didn't know you were listening in, and I'm so sorry. I waited for you, and we thought that...that Eggman kidnapped you, so I got worried and looked for you."

"Sonic..." Amy trailed off, unable to believe what she was hearing. Normally she was the one looking for him. To think that her fantasies over him coming for her had actually come true.

"Rouge overheard you what you misheard while I was...making something really special for ya', and pretty much laid out on me pretty hard. I hope that...this clears up the misunderstanding." Sonic added, smiling in sadness.

Seeing the truth in his eyes, and hearing it in his voice, the pink hedgehog now felt guilty for having jumped to conclusions for what she heard, without even hearing it out from her boyfriend who, after a long time, finally admitted his feelings for her.

"I always admired you, Amy. I guess I...wasn't ready to admit it to myself. It's stupid, I know. You're beautiful, kind and caring, really brave and determined, and strong when it comes to your hammer. Even now, I...well, I wanna live out for adventures first before I finally settle down, if you know what I'm saying. But I'd never abandon you, Ames. I'm sorry for being a jerk like that." He said, shrugging a little.

Amy sighed, at first unable to believe what she was hearing, but knew in that instant that he really did love her. He just wasn't ready for settling down yet, but he did care about her so much, to the point of being so worried and came looking for her, hoping for forgiveness and to clear up a few things.

"Oh, Sonic...I'm sorry that I hurt you too. I just...even thinking about you makes me crazy." She replied, to which Sonic gently placed his right hand onto her face, and wiped away a tear with his thumb.

"I guess the saying that 'people always do crazy things when they're in love' is true. 'Cause you make me do crazy things too, Ames." Sonic replied with a wink. He then removed his left hand and revealed the bouquet and flower crown and handed them to her. "Will these do?"

Her eyes lighting up in amazement, Amy gently took the bouquet as she said happily, sniffling at the flowers' beautiful scent. "Oh, Sonic! They're beautiful! How did you know?"

Sonic chuckled, shrugging. "One, because I know girls love flowers and two, I'm a guy who loves nature. It's no secret that I love flowers and proud of it. It's guys like Knuckles and Eggman that don't see it that way."

"Well, I always knew you do love the great outdoors." Amy replied, smiling brightly.

"Better than sitting around watching tv or just sitting in general all day." Sonic said, before carefully placing the flower crown onto his now official girlfriend's head. "I know this isn't as good as Cream's, but I think I did okay with it."

Amy couldn't help but tear up happily, as she had seen how beautiful the flower crown was and that Sonic had actually made it for her. Overwhelmed with happiness, she threw herself into his chest and hugged him tightly, and while Sonic cringed, he just laughed and returned it, relieved and happy to have made things up. After a long time of simply ignoring her affections, he finally admitted his feelings towards her, and shared her love.

They stayed like this for a long while, the wind gently blowing against them, and the flower petals flying everywhere as the sun began to set. It made the scene more romantic.

"So...about our date..." Sonic began as he and Amy moved back a little, with warm smiles on their faces.

"I was thinking of the movies at the new Walk-In Theatres they opened up, and see the new King Mongo, but I think we can wait for our next date to see that." Amy replied, glancing around the field they were in. "Right now, I want to spend the rest of the day just out here with these beautiful flowers with you. Doesn't this make it more romantic?"

Sonic smiled, placing an arm around his girlfriend and gently pulled her closer to him. "I don't see why not? Besides, this is one of my favorite spots anyway."

It made Amy so happy, and while Sonic still felt guilty over what Tails is going through, he was relieved to have made things up with the pink hedgehog who was now his girlfriend for real. The two spent the rest of the afternoon in the field gazing at the sunset and flowers, Sonic giving her a bit of a ride in his arms as he ran in high-speed which she thoroughly enjoyed, gazed up at the stars when nighttime fell before it was time to head home.

He carried her to her house and dropped her off.

"I gotta say, that was probably the best date I've ever had." Sonic admitted as he gestured Amy to her front door.

"It really was for me, that's for sure." Amy replied, pausing at her door with a warm smile. "Sonic..."

"Yes?"

"I...I guess I was really obsessed with you, I didn't even realize that you have your own dreams to follow. I know that I can't stop you, but maybe, on your next adventure to tour the world or something, I could come with you? Even if you want to invite Tails as well."

Sonic smiled warmly, and nodded. "I could use some company. Sometimes it does tend to get a bit lonely when I'm out on the road. Even with or without Tails and the others, I would like it if you did come with next time. There's still the whole world to see and...I think you'd really like it too."

"That'd be great." She replied, and leaned up to kiss him on the cheek, making Sonic blush as, while she did kiss him a lot, this one felt...more softer and pleasant. Once Amy stopped, she beamed at him and waved. "Good night, Sonic."

Recovering quickly as he felt his heart leap, Sonic winked as he waved back. "Night, Amy."

Once she was safely instead, Sonic smiled even wider. Who would've thought that it would take something like today to actually and finally fall for Amy? As he turned around to head back home, Sonic the Hedgehog realized that he had at last became head over heels for Amy Rose.

And admittedly, he loved this new normal.

Sonic couldn't wait for that next adventure...probably after his next date to the movies, since he was looking forward to that King Mongo movie. It will be worth it.

The End.

A/N: Probably not my best one-shot fanfic, but I wanted to post something before the rest of the week is another full-on one. I will get back to updating my other stories, but they will have to wait until at least sometime next week.

See you later!
