A/N: I know it's been awhile. After Naya was found, I haven't been in the right headspace to write more on this fic, especially since Santana is coming back in this chapter. All I have to say is that I wish peace and comfort for her family, friends, everyone who loved her, especially her sweet baby boy. Naya lived and her memory will continue to do so. Naya had a strong faith in God and believed that He has a plan. It's one of the things that comforted her after Cory's death I have listened to her audiobook this past week, and while I cry to it at times, it is really comforting.
The week following flew by. Blaine now had a lot less free time since Sierra was now mobile. He and his mother went on a mad baby proofing spree making each communal room of their home a mini fortress. His father only tripped over baby gate three times, each time while trying to drink is coffee and read the newspaper simultaneously. His mother just laughed and poked fun at him asking 'who in the world still read a physical newspaper anymore'.
Blaine was excited about his date with Kurt tonight. Kurt had been ridiculously busy this past week with sewing Kiki's costumes. Kiki was working hard on building his social media presence trying to get his career off the ground. Blaine had the whole evening planned. His parents would be away at a conference for the weekend. He was going to have his grandmother watch Sierra, but Kurt had insisted that he wanted to spend time with both of them and have her get to know him as well. Blaine didn't say anything, but he felt like his heart might have grown two sizes that day.
Blaine had it all planned out. He was going to make them a super simple dinner of ziti, with a side salad and garlic bread, and he bought a cheesecake from the best bakery in town. He fully intended to woo Kurt, and maybe, get to second base that night. What? A man has needs.
Unfortunately, those plans would not come to fruition with one phone call from Santana.
"Hey San, what's up."
"Hey B. So, I just got a call from Tony. The pianist tonight came down with the flu and he has some big event there tonight and is desperate. I know you had a date with Kurt tonight, but he's willing to pay double your normal nightly rate tonight. It will be me and you. I know you need the money and you know how much I hate singing with Kyle, dude is a creeper."
"San, your rambling. Ugh, I really need the money too. I'll call Kurt and maybe we can move our date to tomorrow. Tell Tony I'll do it, but I want cash."
"Will do, and sorry again. You know I'm rootin' for you to get that D."
"Oh my God, Santana. We weren't gonna hook up tonight. We've only been official for like a week."
"And? What's your point? You're a grown ass man and can do what you want to do."
"I'm hanging up now. I'll pick you up at six. I have to find a sitter for Sierra."
"Bye babe."
Blaine disconnected the line in a huff and called his grandmother. As if tonight couldn't get worse, he promised Santana to work, and his grandmother was sick and didn't want to risk getting the baby sick, so she couldn't babysit. Shit. Maybe Sam can watch her.
Before he called Sam he needed to tell Kurt. He didn't want to have the conversation over text so he called him.
"Hey B, what's up? I'm really looking forward to tonight."
Blaine sighed before responding.
"About that, Santana called me and our main gig is desperate and is willing to pay twice our normal pay to work tonight. I really need the money and I'm really sorry."
"Well, I can't say I'm not disappointed, but I understand. You gotta do what you gotta do."
"Thank you for understanding, I know this whole thing can't be easy for you."
"What whole thing?"
"Me." Blaine paused. "Having a baby."
"Stop right there. It's new, but it's not hard. I'm sure they'll be times that I have to cancel too. It's life, babe."
"And like it couldn't suck more, my grandma is sick and can't watch the baby. Since I'm working with Santana, she can't watch her either. Hopefully Sam can."
"I can watch her."
"Wait, what?"
"I mean, if you're comfortable with it, I'd be happy to watch her. Maybe you can bring her over my place, I can get some work done there if she falls asleep and Carole will be there if I'm in over my head. But I completely get if you're not comfortable leaving her with me. It's a big deal."
"You're perfect." Blaine swooned.
"Come again?"
"It means a lot to me that you'd be willing to help out like that. It also means a lot that you understand and respect that I might not trust everyone with her. I know we haven't been dating that long. But you're different. And, besides, like you said, you'll have Carole and I trust her without reservations."
"You're amazing you know that?"
"Not as amazing as you."
Kurt positively beamed.
"As much as I would love to continue this cheesy battle of emotions. I have to get some work done. Bring her with whatever she'll need before you go to work, I need to prepare my house for a baby. It's been 19 years since there was one in this house."
"Seriously, thank you both for understanding and going above and beyond."
"It's no big, B. It will give me and Miss Sierra time to get to know each other. I also think it will life Carole's spirits."
"Well thanks again, and we'll see you about five-thirty."
"See you then, B."
"Alright Miss Moose, we gotta pack you up. You're hanging out with Kurt tonight." Sierra giggled as Blaine kissed her cheek. How did I get so lucky?
Burt was tired. He had just flown in for August recess the day prior and already had campaign meetings. So much for being able to just relax and get his hands dirty for a few weeks. He honestly had no idea how much work being a Representative would be, especially while still running a small business. Thankfully, business has picked up there, so he was able to hire a manager to run the shop in his absence.
While, yes, he was busier than ever and hasn't had a decent night of sleep in weeks, it was worth it. He was doing this for his family; both the family he has now and the family yet to come. They were making progress on Finn's Law, legislation increasing minimum sentences and mandatory drug and alcohol counseling in DUI cases. They've also successfully started a nonprofit fund that pays taxi and Uber fees when the venue orders the service for the patron. If even one life is saved, all the sleepless nights were worth it.
But it wasn't just Finn's Law, it's also about Kurt and other disadvantaged communities. America prides itself on "all men being created equal", but they are doing poorly putting that into action. Burt was going to change that. Kurt had just come out when country wide marriage equality was passed. He remembers it like it was yesterday, he watched Kurt tentatively look at him for his reaction out of the corner of his eye. He clearly remembers his posture soften from it's tense state when Burt let out a holler. It was no secret that there was nothing that Burt wouldn't do for Kurt, and his run for office is him putting his money where his mouth is, so to speak.
Burt was definitely looking forward to getting home. Kurt was going to be out with his new boyfriend, although he has yet to spend much time with this one, he seems like a much better kid than the other guys his son brought around. He knows that him and Finn were friends and that he came over now and then, but farther than that and him being able to sing he didn't really know that much about him. Plenty of time for that, however, maybe he'd have Kurt invite him over for dinner the next day. But tonight, was about him and Carole. Burt may be a simple man, but he can romance a woman with the best of them. He had a dozen roses and a slice of Carole's favorite cheesecake and Burt was ready for a quiet evening.
Imagine his surprise when he walked into the house to hear a baby laughing. What? He made his way past the diaper bag on the table in the foyer and to the kitchen. He was definitely not expecting Kurt sitting at the table drinking a cup of coffee with Carole playing with a baby. He was also incredibly confused at the way Kurt was watching the two of them with the baby. He knows that look. That's the look of awe that a parent has.
"Hey Kurt, I thought you had a date tonight."
The comment shook Kurt out of whatever was going on in his head. "Oh, hi dad. He had to work so I'm babysitting."
"I can see that, who's baby?"
"This is Blaine's daughter, Sierra." Burt, confusion written clearly on his face, put down the flowers and the cake, and took a seat next to Kurt.
"Blaine has a baby?"
"Yea. You remember, don't you?"
"Oh yea, I do remember one of Finn's friends having a baby. I didn't realize it was Blaine. I guess this is why you don't make assumptions, huh kid?" Burt paused thinking of the right thing to say. He knows that if he comes off offensive Kurt will likely just close him out. "This is definitely not a situation we talked about before, but how do you feel about this? Being a relationship with someone with a child is a big deal."
Much to Burt's surprise, Kurt just looked up at him and smiled. "I know dad, but it just feels right with Blaine. Trust me, when I found out about her, I was surprised, to say the least. B-but, I think Blaine is worth it."
"I'm glad son, but remember, this can't be a casual relationship. This isn't like relationships you've had. She's young now and she won't know the difference, but as she gets older, she's going to get to know you in a parental role. Yours and Blaine's hearts wouldn't be the only one's broken if this doesn't work."
"I know, dad. I've definitely thought about it. He's not like those guys anyway. They were nothing but placeholders. I feel like he's the one I've been waiting on. He's good for me dad."
Burt clapped Kurt's shoulder as he spoke, "I'm glad, but Kurt, you need to make sure you're good for him too. Blaine's a good kid from what I know and remember how I raised you."
"I know dad. I have to grow up sometime. Besides, it's refreshing. Hanging out with them is like a bit of light in the darkness." He then went and whispered in his dad's ear. "Look at Carole. I haven't seen her that happy since Finn died. It doesn't make any sense, and I am scared, but it just feels right."
"I understand," Burt began clapping his shoulder. "I raised a good man. But just a bit of advice from your old man, make sure that you find time to work on yourself, and you and Blaine find time to be a couple by yourselves as well. She is the most important thing in his life, but you both need to make sure that you have adult time. I'm sure Carole would be happy to help you out with that." He paused and looked at his wife who hasn't take her attention of the baby for a moment to even acknowledge his presence. "Welp Kurt, I see that my plans for tonight are out the window. I'm going to take a shower and head to bed."
"Dad, ew. Goodnight, I love you."
"I love you too, son."
Burt smiled as he took one last look at the room. Kurt was now sitting right next to Carole as the both played with the ecstatic baby in her lap. This could be something good for his family, he just hoped it worked out.
These are a few of my favorite things.
Sorry it's so short, I just wanted something happy. It's been a long month.
