As the ship slowly comes to life a few hours after Threepio's outburst Callera takes the time to talk to Shmi. "I'm sorry I uprooted your life so suddenly and thoroughly."
Shmi smiles softly eyes wary, anxious, and hopeful. "It's alright, you've given my son and I the greatest of gifts. I just don't know what we'll do now."
Callera nods and places a hand on Shmi's shoulder, "I can understand that fear. I freed you, so I am responsible for that uncertainty. When I talk to the Jedi Council, I'll see if they have a job you can do and they can pay you for. If not them, then Queen Amidala and her staff. Something that can provide for your needs while you plan your next step."
"What about Anakin?"
"Anakin's fate is far more difficult to discern." Callera's wry smile belies the seriousness of her words. "Your son is powerful in the Force, I only know of a handful of children who are as connected to the Force as he is." 'Most of them his descendants.'
"What does that mean?"
"It means he needs teacher and guidance as to how to commune with the Force safely."
"Why not you?" Shmi's voice pleading gently.
"There are parts of my past that make me a poor teacher. I was taught poorly in the beginning, and even now I keep questioning if I'm staying in the light. On top of that, the Jedi Council will probably want to bring Anakin into the Jedi Order, and teach him their way." Callera's eyes look away with shame-filled eyes.
Shmi reaches out and turns Callera's head to look her in the eye. "Qui-Gon talked to me some about the Jedi and their ways, and that you seem to live by the spirit of the Order even though you are not a part of it. I want YOU to teach my son. You are resourceful, quick-thinking, and from what I've seen you don't let the Force run your life."
Shaking her head with a watery chuckle Callera replies, "The Forces flows through everyone, I just was taught to remember there are other ways to accomplish goals rather than just 'trusting in the Force.'"
"And that's why you should teach my son. He's passionate and driven, not a retiring and contemplative individual."
"When I talk with the Council about the issues I am going to them for, I'll bring it up and offer."
Shmi nods in acceptance a slightly knowing smile on her face. "Thank you."
Callera just nods in a contemplative daze and starts to move through the ship, trying to clear her head.
'I've changed so much in just a few days; Shmi, Threepio, Maul, Watto, Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan…Anakin. Their fates are no longer certain.'
THUMP. Bumping into Obi-Wan breaks her reverie. "I'm sorry Obi-Wan."
"You looked distracted, are you alright?" His eyes clear with concern.
Callera glances around to make sure no one is nearby before responding, "Just realizing how much I've changed things in such a short period of time."
"You mean fighting Maul instead of letting him face Master Qui-Gon?"
"That's a part of it. Shmi was never freed and Anakin actually had to race originally."
"Why did you choose to change things? Would not letting things play out now mean you might save the knowledge for a more impactful point?"
"I acted because it was the right thing to do. To do nothing when people are hurting is an anathema to me."
Nodding in acceptance before he speaks, "I understand, I do not know if I'd have the wisdom to choose when to act or when not to in your shoes."
"I believe you would."
"I am not that Obi-Wan you know of, teacher of the man who butchered the Jedi Order, I am just a Padawan!"
"You are correct, you aren't him. But I can see how you could become him. Intelligent, cautious, skeptical, and driven. Even if you never become him, I have faith that you will be a great Jedi in your own right."
That admission stuns the young man briefly before, "I've met the boy. I can see how I would be willing to teach him if Qui-Gon passed before he could. He's curious and wants to do good. He also speaks very highly of you."
"Finding out someone is willing to risk their freedom for yours will do that."
"I think you'll be his teacher if Qui-Gon does not try to take him as a student."
Callera's sigh and sag startle Obi-Wan, "Not you too. Shmi wants me to teach him, and I'd guess Qui-Gon wouldn't mind it either."
Obi Wan nods, "We talked a little about the matter last night. If you are right and the Jedi Order needs to change, what better way to help demonstrate those changes than with a Padawan of your own?"
"Allya save me from fools." Callera's bitter words cause the Padawan in front of her to leap slightly. "I am broken and battered Obi-Wan and in no shape to take a student. I was supposed to be self-reflecting and healing! Instead, I'm fist to face with a Sith Lord and about to try and blow a conspiracy to destroy the Jedi Order and the Republic out into the open!"
Obi-Wan stands silent as he lets Callera's bitter frustration flow from her mouth. Giving her a moment before replying. "I might not be the best person to give this advice, but Qui-Gon advocates often for being 'in the moment' with the Living Force." His form stiff and uncomfortable, "So maybe in this moment, the Force brought you here to heal yourself and Anakin?"
