So, this is my first Game of Thrones fic, and I had an idea for a while to combine it with one of my other favorite TV/Book series, The Sharpe books by Bernard Cornwell which was also a TV series starring none other than Sean Bean.
They story will more or less follow the plot of the Sharpe series but will mix in that of Game of thrones.
In this story will be set with the same technology that they had in the late 1700's and early 1800's when the books took place. No magic or anything like that, maybe I haven't gotten that far yet. The geography will more or less stay the same, maybe move some places around for plot purposes.
Anyways on with the show.
It was a just around the crack of dawn, when he found himself heading down to the creek with a few other of the lads. The cold morning air blowing from the south, sent shivers down his spine causing him to pull his coat just a little bit closer. As he reached the creek, he noticed that a few men were already there, along with the women that follow in camp, washing clothes.
He placed his Baker rifle against the large piles of rocks, carefully as not to get the flintlock wet, before removing his battalions' dark grey jacket, laying it next to his rifle. Kneeling down to splash the cold waters erased any drowsiness that was left by the long night before. Ranking his hands through his black curls thinking it was almost time to cut them again. He preferred it long but after taking the King's stag* he had little to say in the matter. He pulled out his shaving kit and got to work, slowly and carefully utilizing the straight razor to clear his face of any and all stubble.
He felt the cold air sting his now naked face, cupping more water his rinse his face, patting it down with his used rag he got ages ago.
Looking toward the horizon he heard a neigh and the claps of hooves riding towards them, he looked to his left to see the General, Lord Stannis Baratheon, clad in his yellow and grey jacket on his morning ride. As the general got closer the dark-haired man looked to his men, "Eye's down lads."
Those in the ranks knew it was improper to look at a noble, he never liked it.
He heard the splashes of the horse crossing before he looked up to see it riding out. He was surprised the general was all alone, except for his dog, armed only with his pistol, especially this close to enemy territory. He shook his head of the thought; it wasn't his place to think such things. He stared at his reflection for a few moments, making sure he looked decent enough to begin his duty for the day.
Standing up he threw his jacket over his shoulder, about to turn around when he heard barking. Looking towards the wood line he saw the general in a full sprint, with three riders clad in red coats on his tail.
He threw his jacket down, reaching for his rifle, cocking it.
He ran towards the other side of the creek, watching as one of the red coat bastards shot at the general causing his horse to rear, throwing him into the river.
The dark-haired man steady himself and aimed towards the rider closest to him. He felt the familiar recoiled of the rifle as he watched the man fall from his horse. Slowly he made his way to the downed general trying his best to get to shore, putting himself in the line of defense, all the while keeping his eye on the next rider.
He was too slow to move out of the way as he felt the sting of a blade across his left shoulder, but he was ready when the rider came back around. Using the butt of the rifle he clubbed the rider from the horse. The red coat struggled to get back up before the dark-haired man slammed the base of his rifle into his face.
Partly out of breath he turned to see the final rider coming at him at full speed, he began to panic until he saw a pistol in the down riders belt, quickly without even thinking he grabbed it, aiming towards the rider and firing just as the rider was about to bring down his sword.
He let out a breath of relief, looking down his right side he sees his once white right sleeve is now stained with blood, some of theirs, mostly his. Hearing splashing from behind he made his way to the general who had a gash from his ear down to the jaw line. Helping the disoriented man to the bank he was met with an older man, grey balding hair and beard, missing his first half of fingers on his right hand.
"Better late than never Davos," Stannis stated. Before getting an answer, he turned to the dark-haired man, "What's your name?"
The man in question snapped to attention, "Snow," he stuttered, "Sergeant Jon Snow, 2nd Battalion, 95th rifles, Sir!"
"I'm in your debt good sir," he began collecting his breath, "You did me a damn good turn," he smirked looking at him, "Now I'm going to do you a damn bad one."
Snow was surprised and confused.
"I'm giving you a field commission Snow."
Snow looked at him in disbelief.
"From this moment on you're a lieutenant, in the 95th." The general turned to Davos, "Ser Davos meet Mr. Snow."
Davos looked between the two men before he reached for Snow's hand, "Congratulations, I must say this is indeed a good choice, I knew the moment I saw him that he had the makings of a natural born officer."
Snow just stood there still trying to comprehend what was going on, missing what was said between the two.
"Your Colonel will be informed, light duty until his wounds heal," putting pressure on his wound the general turned away, "Good day to you both."
Davos turned to Snow, "You see son, light duty is you staying at headquarters and dealing with a bunch of arseholes, how about we find you something more fitting for you?" he asked with a knowing smirk.
Snow returned it, "As long as it's safe sir."
"That's my boy," he smirked clapping his good shoulder, "Welcome to a whole new world, lad."
So, think of this as a pilot/preview of sorts, because I want to see how many actually want to read something like this.
Thank you and I hope you'd enjoy hopefully the first of many adventures.
