Chapter 11: On my Own

Eponine felt as a light as a feather when she got home. She went to her window and drew down the blinds. Now the night was near and she could make believe he's here.

Eponine was pulled from her daydream by a violent knocking at the door.

"Eponine!" the visitor barked.

Why was Marius here? Outside her room at this time of night? Her heart fluttered slightly at the thought but her illusions were quickly shattered when she opened the door. Marius has a face of thunder.

"What have you done?" He demanded.

"What do you mean?" Eponine panicked. Had he discovered how she felt about him?

"What did you say to Cosette?" He said darkly.

Eponine was completely lost. "I haven't said anything to her." she said simply.

"Well for some god dammed reason she has in her head that there's something between us?" Marius threw a fist against the wall.

Eponine's heart leapt. "Why would she think that?"

"I don't know!" Marius looked wild with anger and despair. "I don't know but she was everything to me. Everything!"

Eponine felt her heart break.

"I did not live until I met her. How can I live when we are parted?" He looked so broken that Eponine could not help but reach out to take his hand but he pulled away sharply. "And all because of you." His voice dripped with resentment. "I have to go."

"Where?" Eponine cried as he stormed towards the door, but Marius didn't stop. "Wait!" she cried frantically. But it was too late. The door slammed behind Marius and he was gone.

"I love you." Eponine said into the emptiness. "I love you." she added. "But only on my own."
