All right, it's time for another one-shot, this time about May getting her own birthday celebration!
Why May first? Well, simply put, when May got to celebrate her own sweet sixteen, the events of Shattered Memories happened, and... yeah. I feel like I owe her a proper birthday celebration after that mess.
And, as I promised back in Fantastic Flashbacks, Mat will be assisting me with this one! One more thing I should say before we get started: all of my oneshots will take place within the timeline of Totally Spies: The New Adventures unless otherwise noted.
So, then, without further ado, it's time for the feature presentation! Sit back, relax, and enjoy May's Marvelous Birthday!
6:34 A.M. – Malibu University, Nick and May's Dormitory
May's eyes slowly fluttered open, happy that, for once, she wasn't cruelly ripped from sleep's grasp by an annoyingly loud alarm clock that didn't know when to shut up. (During their most recent trip to the Groove, May had immediately went on the search for a new alarm clock, as she had promised many times.)
As she adjusted to being back in the waking world again, May looked over at her boyfriend, still sound asleep. May couldn't help but smile, wondering what she'd done so right to deserve such an amazing boyfriend.
Unable to help herself now, May leaned forward and kissed Nick on the cheek, enough to rouse him from his slumber.
"Mornin', Nick," May giggled.
"Mornin' yourself," Nick replied. "Happy birthday, May."
"Awww, you," May laughed. "I'm looking forward to a lot of cool stuff today."
"And I'm gonna make sure your birthday's a good one this time," Nick stated. "I know your sweet sixteen wasn't very sweet due to circumstances out of our control..."
"Hey, this is you we're talking about," May replied. "If there's anything you can do to make your girlfriends happy, you'll do it. ...and that's still really surreal, now that I think about it."
"What's surreal?" Nick wondered.
"That I get to be your girlfriend when you already have a girlfriend," May answered, reaching over to hug Nick. "I know I've said it a lot, but I'm shocked that everyone's okay with you having two girlfriends. I certainly never thought it would happen. Why do you think I tried to keep it a secret?"
"To be fair, we were all there when... that stuff happened," Nick responded, knowing it was still hard for May to talk about, even now. "That's most likely why everyone was so understanding. Really, it would have been weird otherwise."
"I guess so," May stated. "I'm just happy that everything worked out in the end."
"Aaaaaand on that note, I've gotta go meet the others," Nick quipped. "I did promise them we'd all meet up once I woke up to discuss our plans for today."
"Wouldn't want to keep them waiting, would ya?" May teased as Nick hopped out of bed, sneaking a kiss to his cheek before he left.
7:15 A.M. – The Spies' Penthouse
"All right, Nick, since we're all gathered here, shall we begin discussing plans?" Haruka proclaimed.
"Yeah, she's your girlfriend, so I figure it's up to you to take the lead," Bridget responded.
So, Nick discussed his ideas, making double-triple sure that May wasn't secretly peeking in on them, with ten of the spies each agreeing to split into teams to accomplish their tasks while Nick distracted her.
"But... how exactly are you going to distract May for so long?" Sam asked.
"Oh, just challenge her to Smash Bros. and she'll be occupied for a long time," Nick laughed. "After all, we're still prepping for that upcoming tournament. Besides, I've already got my present for her taken care of."
"All right, then, everyone," Alex proclaimed. "Let's begin Operation: May's Marvelous Birthday!"
"Sensational!" Clover exclaimed.
"Gee, I wonder what May's really into besides Smash Bros. and all," Mat stated.
"Leave that to me, bro," Nick replied.
The teams consisted of Nick, Haruka, Alex, Britney, and Nozomi, while Mat, Sam, Clover, Melissa, and Dawn made up team two.
"Well, the Groove hasn't let us down," Sam replied.
"And don't think I forgot about you and my birthday, Nick," Alex quipped.
"Same goes for you to me, Mat," Sam laughed.
"We heard," Nozomi told the two of them.
"All I can say is... ooh, la, la!" Haruka giggled.
She kept it at that, and Nozomi backed off on an ear grab.
8:02 A.M. – The Groove
After everyone picked up some breakfast and such, the spies made off in separate directions to surprise May on her birthday.
"Hopefully May's a movie fan," Mat told Sam. "I think this'll be my present to May."
"I might go for snacks and maybe have May enjoy a dinner with Nick one night," Sam remarked as she eyed a restaurant gift card.
"I'm planning on a new coat for May," Clover stated.
Melissa and Dawn were looking over whatever to get for May.
"Hey, I think I see a dolphin necklace over in that one shop!" Melissa quipped.
"Oh, she'll love that," Dawn giggled even as she eyed a music shop with a very obvious album in the front window.
"I wonder how the others are coming along," Clover stated once Melissa and Dawn were back with them.
"Well, well, I spy a gift," Haruka teased, glancing towards a nearby bookstore. "May's kinda been clamoring for that new romance novel that April recommended to her, and lo and behold!"
"Hasn't May been watching that new Pretty Cure series lately?" Alex asked. "Because I'm seeing a DVD set of it in that video store over there."
"Yeah, they carry imports now, too," Nozomi replied. "I'm eyeballing that cool-looking dolphin t-shirt over there. After all, we all know how much May loves dolphins, right?"
"Oh, tell me about it," Britney laughed. "Hey, I think I found something she'll like. How about that cute-looking cap? After all, it's getting pretty hot around here."
"Sounds like we've got our objectives," Nick proclaimed. "Let's head in and complete them."
"Wait, Nick, what about your gift?" Nozomi wondered.
"Oh, I've already taken care of that," Nick answered. "I took care of it ahead of time because I had to make a few calls to the Jellyfish Pirates to get this one going. Trust me, she'll love it."
"I'm almost feeling guilty over keeping May back at the dorm," Alex stated.
"I know, I feel the same way," Nick replied.
"Hopefully she's okay with holding down the fort at our dorm?" Britney wondered.
9:28 A.M. – The Spies' Penthouse
Meanwhile, May was all alone at Mali-U. She had gone out to get some food to bring back after running an errand or two.
"I wonder why they all took off and left me behind?" May wondered.
Oh, but she knew they were probably making birthday preparations. She just knew better than to start snooping.
With that in mind, May sat down and looked for something to watch on TV, realizing she just had to be patient.
As she flipped through the channels in search of a good show to watch this early, May couldn't help but reminisce on the adventures she'd been a part of since reconnecting with Nick.
Who would have thought she'd become an agent of W.O.O.H.P. just because she had a connection to one of their super-spies? To be fair, she had kinda been dragged along on that initial chase to find where Nick had been going in such a hurry.
And ever since, she'd been part of the circle, trading jokes, busting bad guys, and generally defending the peace almost like they were the second generation of the Jellyfish Pirates.
It had been incredible to see her old friends again as well...
...even if that particular caper hadn't ended as well as she'd thought it would.
Her heart had almost completely shattered when Johnny had met his demise at Millia's hands. In fact, she knew she most likely would have been completely shattered if Nick hadn't been there to pick up the pieces.
After everything he'd done for her, was it any wonder that she ended up falling in love with him?
Even if she'd been forced to keep those feelings a secret, since, well, Nick already had a girlfriend.
But just when she thought she was never going to get her chance, an opportunity had presented itself.
To this day, May was still surprised that the spies had been so accepting of her feelings that they were basically all right with Nick having two girlfriends.
Yeah, May knew she kept dwelling on that, but it was still so surreal to her.
Still, she decided to count her blessings, because the time she'd spent with Nick was magical, for lack of a better word.
For one, she'd even gotten to meet her favorite band of all time.
May glanced back at the nearby clock, noting that it was still early.
Eh, why not take a little nap before the festivities begin? May thought as she relaxed.
12:15 P.M. – The Spies' Penthouse
A loud "POP" sound jolted May from her sleepy state, and she quickly leaped to her feet, her fists clenched. "All right, who's the wise guy who wants to get punched?!" May shouted, wondering why this felt so familiar.
A chorus of eleven separate voices immediately responded with a loud and boisterous "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MAY!"
Needless to say, May was speechless for a bit.
"What... is..." May started, but couldn't complete her question.
"Before you say anything else..." Mat started.
"This is what we've been up to," Nick finished.
"And we're gonna do all we can to make it another memorable one for you, May," Nozomi added.
"And we know what we saw the last time, too," Alex laughed, looking at Sam and Mat, remembering their merry chase on the beach.
"Uh-huh," Haruka added.
"Anyway, memories aside," Nick cut in. "Once again, happy birthday, May! I'll be the last to give you my gift."
Alex went first with her gift to May, then Mat, Nozomi, Sam, and so on... until Nick was certainly the last one to give May her birthday gift.
"After Nick gives his gift," Sam started, following a few whispers from Mat to Clover, Alex, and Sam herself. "We have one extra... surprise for you, May."
"On second thought," Nick replied. "If it's quick, you all can go before me."
"No doubt it is, bro," Mat answered.
He motioned to whisper in Nick's ear what he had in mind with the spies' help – toss May in the pool.
"Sounds like fun, honestly," Nick chuckled. "All the times she's done it to us, huh?"
"Okay, let's do it," Sam quietly stated to Mat.
The four of them made their way to May.
"Uh... what..." May started before Sam and Mat picked her up.
"Oh, I know what's gonna happen," Britney laughed. "I got the same treatment, May."
"What is going on?" May wondered as Sam and Mat brought her in their grasps to the penthouse pool.
"Oh, this should be good," Melissa replied.
"No way I'm just gonna view this," Dawn replied as she got her phone out.
Alex and Clover already had their phones out to get this on video. Britney was soon to follow. Nick started to snicker at the actions of some of the spies.
"Holy crapbaskets!" Haruka exclaimed and got in the spirit herself.
"Hey, what IS going on?" May wondered again.
She put two and two together when she was brought to the penthouse pool.
"Hey, I don't have a suit on yet!" May exclaimed.
"You think we should?" Mat asked Sam.
Sam sighed about the matter; the two put May down and turned to give her some privacy.
"No worries, guys," Clover stated. "We'll keep her from running off."
They stood guard as May did a wardrobe change via her X-Powder to her swimsuit. Mat and Sam turned to see she was in her suit and grabbed May again.
"Okay, May," Mat stated as Alex, Clover, Haruka, and Dawn got their phones ready to record.
At the count of three, Sam and Mat executed May's birthday toss, hurling May into the penthouse pool.
May couldn't help but sputter a bit as she landed in the water, despite being ready for this. And now she was reminded of all the times she'd sent many of the others flying into the pool (there was one time where all she'd done was say "hi" to Haruka, only to spook her so much she'd ended up jumping in the pool; now that was a laugh and a half).
"Happy birthday, May!" Clover exclaimed again.
"That was... definitely an experience," Nick laughed.
"Anyway, now that that's taken care of," Britney quipped. "I say it's time Nick gave May her present."
"I second that," Nick replied as Melissa gave May a towel to dry off.
"Well, don't keep me in suspense, Nick," May giggled.
"To be fair, May, the reason I wanted to wait until the others had given their gifts is because... well, this one's a bit special," Nick explained, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, gift-wrapped box.
Once May finally tore the wrapping paper apart, she saw something that she honestly thought she would never see again.
It was a diamond ring with a jewel shaped like a small dolphin.
But the last time she'd seen this ring was...
"N-Nick? Where did you get this?" May asked, a few tears falling. "I thought... I thought this was..."
"You remember those strange 'secret' calls I was making last week?" Nick asked, to which May nodded. "The reason I wanted to keep it a secret was because I was actually talking to the Jellyfish Pirates about what to get you, since I wanted to make it a little more special than your average birthday gift. And yeah, that ring was the one Johnny had given to his girlfriend. I actually asked Mira if it was okay to give it to you, considering... well, circumstances. But she actually told me you'd love it. I guess, alongside being a present from me to you, it could be something for you to remember him by."
May slowly reached out to slide the ring onto her finger before losing all composure and lunging over to tackle hug Nick.
"I... take it you like it?" Nick asked.
"Nick... you are seriously the best," May laughed. "I know you probably thought I'd be sad because of who that ring belonged to, but... really, I'm happy. It truly means a lot that you'd do something like this for me, you know. So... um... ah, heck it. I love you, Nick."
"I love you, too, May," Nick replied.
"Sorry, but is this a bad time?" a voice called from nearby.
"W-wait, Mira?!" May gasped.
Nick reached over to grab his X-Powder and show it to May, which was now showing a video call with the Jellyfish Pirates.
"Oh, good, we got through," Mira giggled. "We wanted to wish you a happy birthday, May!"
"Even though it might not yet be the big day in our neck of the woods, we do know how time zones work, so we figured we'd call ahead of time," Akira quipped.
"Did you like Nick's gift, May?" April asked.
"Oh, I love it," May giggled.
"Yeah, our fearless leader insisted, despite the probable bad memories," Souji proclaimed. "Something to remember our buddy by."
"We'd actually been holding onto it for a while," Yuki stated. "We were planning to give it to you the next time you came over for a visit, but then Nick called us and told us about his idea."
"Safe to say, I think that idea worked out pretty well," a new voice answered, and the screen moved slightly to show Dizzy, the most recent addition to the Jellyfish Pirates. "You're gonna have to tell me all about your adventures the next time you're around, May!"
"Oh, you can bet I'm gonna be in your neck of the woods soon," May replied. "Spring Break is really soon, after all."
"Well, it looks like you're all having a party, so we won't keep you," Mira stated. "You all have fun, and we'll see you on spring break, May!"
With that, the call ended, and the party continued.
May still wondered what she'd done to deserve so many amazing friends.
But she promised to always cherish those friendships, no matter what life threw her way.
After all, just like her boyfriend, she never broke a promise.
