Eden POV
Once the decision to kill Kaine was made, I felt a lot better. I had been a victim but that didn't mean I was going to stay one or even act like one for that matter. Because of Bucky, I was stronger than that. If he could make it through 70 years of Hydra, I could get through this.
I gave myself one last look in the mirror and nodded at my reflection before turning away and walking over to the bed to take a seat on the edge.
I knew I should be concerned that I was talking to myself in a mirror. Sane people didn't do that. But I knew I wasn't crazy…stressed out yes and definitely on the edge, but not crazy. I thought about Bucky and his description of what it was like living with the Winter Soldier part of him. There had been a few times when Bucky had opened up to me about his inner struggle with his other, darker half. He told me it was like he was two people in one and when he first left Hydra, it was an internal battle constantly inside his head. Not returning after his mission had lessened their hold on the Winter Soldier enough that he began to think for himself. Yes, he was a weapon, it was what the Winter Soldier had been created for, but he didn't like being used and he refused to let it happen to him or his other half again. Bucky said he eventually stopped trying to fight the Winter Soldier and learn to coexist with him…and once he did that, things had become much easier. I remember how happy I had felt before when he had told me the Winter Soldier loved me too.
I figured my "reflection" was similar to Bucky's Winter Soldier and if he could learn to live with his, then I could learn to live with mine
I looked around the room, white on white, very sterile and cold…it figures SHIELD wouldn't bother hiring a decorator to spruce up their medical facilities. I had to get out of here…there was no way I wanted to spend another minute longer in this room. I hopped off the bed and made my way to the door Bucky used to leave earlier. I turned the knob and was irritated to find it was locked.
So now I'm being locked in my room like a bad girl.
I scowled to myself and raised my fist to the door and gave it a couple of good hard taps, "Let me out of here", I said, loud and clear.
I lowered my fist and listened for a sign that someone on the other side had heard my request. I stood with my ear to the door for several moments before repeating my demand again and still no one came to the door. A chill down my spine drew my fist away from the door and I turned around to peer cautiously behind me. The sudden feeling of being watched was overpowering and the hairs on the back of my neck raised. I looked around the room for some sort of camera equipment, not surprised that SHIELD would have one, or several, in every room in the building…but upon close inspection of the room, I saw no visible cameras. Obviously, they could be hidden but that didn't seem necessary in a medical facility…but this was SHIELD and with Nick Fury, you never knew.
I scanned the room again and saw it. The long rectangular mirror on the far wall, once inconspicuous, now seemed completely out of place.
Unless it's an observation window…a two-way mirror.
I walked over and stood directly in front of it, staring hard at my reflection in a useless attempt to see who was watching me from the other side. I knew it wasn't Bucky. He would have been unlocking the door and in the room a second after I had knocked the first time. I also knew whoever it only started watching me after I knocked to be let out, so I was confident no one had see my interaction with my reflection. That definitely wasn't going to convince anyone I wasn't losing it.
"Please, let me out" I said calmly.
I waited. The second hand on the clock ticked loudly with each passing minute.
Tick
Tick
Tick
5 minutes passed and I was gritting my teeth hard trying to stay calm.
Relax Eden. They'll sedate you and then you'll be stuck here.
"Let me out of here" I said, still calm but more demanding.
The minutes ticked by again and my anger was reaching a boiling point. I switched tactics.
"I want to see Bucky" I commanded.
I waited…yet the door remained locked and I alone inside.
I stood there, shaking with anger. I was trying hard to give the appearance of coolness, but my already high stress levels were reaching their peaks and I needed Bucky. I needed his warmth and his voice and his touch to calm me down and keep me together. I could admit that much. I needed him.
"Now" I demanded louder.
I began pacing up and down the length of the mirror, giving whoever on the other side the benefit of the doubt and expecting that Bucky would walk through that door any moment. Each minute that ticked by where he didn't appear made me more and more furious until finally, I could take it no longer.
I stopped and turned to the mirror, glaring through my reflection and into the very soul of whoever the hell was on the other side ignoring my demands.
"I want to see Bucky" I said each word slowly, precisely, and seething with fury. I raised both fists and slammed them hard against the mirror, "NOW!"
Bruce POV
I had been examining the chip under a microscope when a nurse came rushing into the room saying Eden was demanding to be let out of her room. I had immediately made my way to the observation room adjacent to hers so I could determine what kind of state Eden was in before entering the room. She had been through a traumatic even and I couldn't be sure that there would be no remaining side effects after removing the chip. She could still be quite dangerous, and I didn't want to risk letting her out of her room until I could be sure everyone, including Eden, would be safe.
She was standing by the door of her room, listening intently. I watched her, trying to ascertain if it was going to be safe. I didn't want to have to sedate her and Bucky had made his thoughts on that known earlier when he demanded for Dr. Cason, who had been holding a powerful sedative in a syringe, to get the fuck out of the room. No. Sedation was not going to be a first or even second option in this case. For someone who had just been through what Eden had, she seemed to be doing quite well now. Whatever Bucky had told her or said to comfort her, seemed to be working better than any anxiety medication every could. Besides being angry at locked in her room, she appeared to be holding it together.
"Find Mr. Barnes" I said, turning away from the girl in the mirror to the nurse standing near the open door of the observation room.
She nodded and left the room. I watched the blonde woman in the room turn around with a suspicious look on her face. She panned the room like she was looking for something and upon not finding whatever it was, her eyes settled on the mirror. She walked over to the glass and peered into it, directly at me. If I didn't know better, I swear she could see me, but I knew that wasn't possible.
She calmly asked to be let out.
I looked behind me, the door was still open, but the nurse had yet to appear. I didn't know where Bucky had gone but from what I had gathered in the short time I had known him he wasn't going to be far from Eden. It shouldn't take the nurse long to locate him.
I turned back around and watched Eden who seemed to be patiently waiting, but I could tell from experience, she was angry.
Oh yeah, I had seen that look in her eyes reflected in my own eyes many times. She was furious under that seemingly calm demeanor. This young woman was becoming quite interesting.
Better keep Tony away from her.
Barnes overprotectiveness of her would be too much for Tony to ignore, he would intentionally try to irritate the man for his own entertainment…it didn't help that Eden was also easy on the eyes, even more reason for Tony to be annoying. He was brilliant but he was also an idiot, and an asshole to boot.
The woman demanded to be let out once again and I looked around helplessly. Desperate, I picked up the phone on the conference table, dialed the extension for the front desk, and asked the security guard who answered to track down Bucky Barnes and bring him to the infirmary.
"I want to see Bucky"
"Yeah, yeah…me too lady" I muttered to myself as I hung up the phone and walked around the table to peer out the open door. The hallway in both directions was empty.
"Now"
Frustrated, I rolled my eyes and made my way back around the table to the observation window. The young blonde was now pacing up and down the length of the window, her fists clenched at her sides as she watched the door across the room, perhaps attempting to use sheer willpower to open it. Her angry, jerky movements as she paced were familiar to me…I did the same thing when I was trying not to let the Hulk out. I tried to get a good look at the woman's eyes as she paced, worried I would see a dangerous green glint there that would be disastrous for everyone.
She stopped suddenly and scowled into the mirror, directly at me. I half expected her eyes to be green, the same shade as the Hulk's…but it was a bright shade of blue staring back at me, shining like the roaring of the ocean during a raging thunderstorm. No, she wasn't like the Hulk…but she was angry, so very, very angry. That was something I completely understood. She had been through hell. If anyone had a right to be pissed off, it was Eden Page.
"I…want…to…see…Bucky" the woman said each word slowly and precisely, shaking with her rage. She raised her fists and slammed them into the mirror, "NOW"
The glass rattled precariously and caused me to stumble back into one of the chairs. I sat down abruptly in it and automatically reached up to slide my glasses back into place on my nose. I raked my hand through my hair and turned towards the door, relieved when I saw the nurse standing there. She had hand on her chest, breathing heavily and looking startled at the crazed woman on the other side of the glass.
"We found him Dr. Banner" she panted out, reaching her hand out as Bucky rushed up behind her and tore into the room.
Bucky looked from me to the woman in the other room. Eden's fists were still firmly pressed against the glass and she was standing unnervingly still, looking wild and beautiful at the same time. It was eerie how dangerous yet angelic the woman looked standing there.
"I want Bucky" she said, quieter this time, more controlled.
"Go" I said, turning in the chair to look back at the man. Bucky hadn't heard me…the man had already disappeared from the doorway.
