In a world where humans co-exist with a man-made half-human half-animal species, Tom Wachowski has never seen any appeal in having one as a pet. Maddie has tried and failed to convince him, but nothing was going to change his mind.

However, one night Tom gets a call from an elderly couple saying that they've found an injured blue hedgehog hybrid. Could this change Tom's mind?

This is my first Sonic fanfic, so enjoy!

Chapter 1

It was a cold night that Tom got the call. The call about a hybrid that had been struck down by a truck on the highway. At first, Tom thought about making up an excuse to get out of it. He didn't really hate hybrids, but he thought that they were unnecessary. What was the point of having one? They had the same comprehension and intelligence, so why treat them like animals?

But then Tom thought about the hybrid. They could be bleeding out their life on the road without any help, slowly loosing their life. Maybe this hybrid could have worried sick owners who would be heartbroken if they found out their hybrid had died, all because Tom Didn't want to help them. Sighing, Tom made up his mind. "I'm on my way" He muttered. Sighs of relief came from the other end of the line, and a Tom hung up the phone.

...

Tom arrived at the scene about ready to fall asleep. It was past midnight already, and Tom just wanted to curl up in his bed beside Maddie and sleep. Sadly, that wouldn't happen tonight.

Tom saw two shadows moving towards him, and soon recognised them as an elderly couple. They must have been the ones that called. Tom thought as he advanced towards them. The man reached him first. "We're so glad you came, officer. We really didn't know what to do" He exclaimed breathlessly. Behind him, the woman nodded in agreement. Tom nodded, but didn't really care about this whole thing. The woman waved her hand and started to walk towards a bright silver car, presumably belonging to the elderly couple.

"Come. We put him in the car so that he at least wasn't laying on the road" she said, and Tom followed them as they walked to the silver car. The couple stepped back and exchanged worried glances with each other. Tom opened the back door and saw someone covered by a green blanket, laying on the seats.

The hybrid's hair was blue and spiky, with two feline like ears poking out the top and some quills stuck out here and there, most of which were bent or snapped. Down his back, the quills grew in number and became a cluster of them. Near the rear was a fluffy blue nub-tail. Tom didn't see any collar on the hybrid, which was a little strange to him. Did he run away? Or was he let go by his owners? Tom shook his head and blinked. Pulling the blanket up, he saw sloppily placed bandages wrapped around his leg.

"We tried our best to patch him up until you got here" the woman piped up from behind him. Tom looked back at them with a small smile "Some advice for next time; make the bandages tighter so that it applies pressure to the wound" The woman nodded in response.

Tom slowly removed the bandages, and he winced when he saw a particularly nasty looking gash on the hybrid's leg. He could see bone beneath the wound and hoped that nothing was broken. He went back to his own car and grabbed the first aid kit that had been waiting in the backseat. The elderly couple were murmuring to themselves now. Tom quickly and briefly disinfected the wound, just to last until he could get some professionals out here, and bandaged the wound. But then Tom noticed something very strange to him. During the disinfecting and bandaging of the wound, the hedgehog hybrid had somehow clung onto Tom without him noticing it. He cast a look at the hybrid's expression. His brows were furrowed and his eyes were scrunched up, as if he was in pain.

Tom suddenly felt sick at the thought of giving this hybrid away to somebody else. Something about him just felt... right. Tom decided right then that he will be taking the hybrid home with him.
