"This one's mine," Rey said, pointing at the modest bungalow she called home. She suddenly became very self-conscious of the peeling white paint that covered the home and was no longer quite as fond of the sunshine yellow front door. The ride had been quick and there had been little time for them to talk. She found herself rather disappointed that they did not have more time to get to know each other and she wondered if she would ever see him again.
"You have a lovely home," Kylo said, pulling into the dirt driveway
"Thank you." Rey replied trying to work up the courage to invite him into her home "And thank you for the ride home."
"It was no problem Rey," he responded, the way her name fell off of his lips made her shiver. They sat awkwardly for another couple of seconds before Rey resigned herself to the fact that she would probably not gather the courage to invite this man to stay. "Our time together was brief but I enjoyed the conversation," Kylo spoke up as she opened the car door.
"Come inside," she blurted "We can keep the conversation going." Kylo looked startled and Rey couldn't help but wonder if she looked the same.
"I wouldn't want to impose." Kylo Ren replied slowly.
"I insist, let me make you dinner before you wander out of town." Kylo looked thoughtful for a couple of seconds before he exited his car and followed Rey up the driveway towards her home. As she put her key in the lock she couldn't help but add "I don't usually do this."
"This?" Kylo asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Inviting strangers into my home." she clarified.
"I'm not a stranger," Kylo said as she led him into the living room "You know my first and last name." She giggled.
"And that is all that I know about you."
"I am thirty years old, I am currently between jobs, my favorite color is black-" he started listing things about himself and Rey started laughing harder.
"Alright, Mr. Kylo Ren who is unemployed and loves black, what are your dreams, what kind of world would you like to live in?" She asked, cutting off his list of features.
The smile that had been slowly growing on his face diminished as she asked the question and he became very serious. "I don't have dreams," he said.
"Everyone has dreams." Rey insisted sitting on one end of her sofa and gesturing for Kylo to do the same.
"I don't" he insisted "I have plans, dreaming does the world no good, if you plan to do what you wish to be done, that is when real change happens." Rey was astonished by those insightful words.
"Alright, what are your plans?" she asked, her voice dropping to almost a whisper as she leaned towards him.
"The world will remember me," he declared confidently, not looking her in her eyes. "I'm going to do something great and the world will remember me for it. Not everyone will appreciate it, but they will know I did it."
Rey hung on to his every word "That's a very ambitious plan, think you need any help?" She gasped and threw her hands over her mouth. Her eyes widened as she realized she had just asked this man if he wanted her to be in his life. She kept trying to remind herself that they had only known each other an hour or so. The more she thought about it, the more she realized, she did not regret her words, and she had meant them, she was simply shocked she had voiced them.
Rey tended to take to things rather quickly, it came from being an orphan. Jakuu was a lonely town, even lonelier for a little orphan girl with only a name to call her own. When she met someone who treated her kindly, who showed an interest in her, she tended to move very quickly with them. Rey became good friends with people instantly, she had been trying to be more cautious, clearly, it was not working. Coming out of her thoughts she realized that Kylo was staring at her. She wondered if she had missed a part of the conversation while she was lost in her thoughts "What?"
"Nothing," he said, shaking his head "It's just, I've never met anyone quite like you Rey."
"Is that a good thing or a bad thing?" she asked suspiciously.
He assessed her for several long seconds, his dark eyes seeming to peer into her soul "Good I think." Rey smiled.
They talked long into the evening to the point where Kylo insisted he had to go. Disappointed Rey had led him to the door.
"If I came back tomorrow would that be ok? He had asked quietly, almost shyly. Rey had brightened considerably at the question which Kylo Ren took as a yes, and thus a pattern was formed.
For the first couple of weeks, he had come to her house every other day in the evenings, sometimes he would bring flowers, other times little gifts or candies. Soon after that, he started picking her up from work. Once he had even surprised her in the middle of the day by coming in to keep her company during her shift.
They talked a lot. Got to know each other well, grew very close.
Kylo was cagey about his past, didn't like to talk about his family, and sometimes avoided questions about his life before he met her but she was ok with that, after all, her past was not the best thing to talk about and she had no family to discuss. All in all, they were perfect for each other and Rey realized the more they talked the more she started to fall for him.
"Ok, Robin Hood or Batman?" She asked, leaning on the counter of the empty cafe. He had surprised her at work today and she was more than happy to have company.
"What kind of question is that? He asked "ones a superhero and one's a crook"
"It could be argued they are both vigilantes," Rey insisted "they both fight to right the wrongs of their worlds, it just so happens that one is a rich guy and one is a homeless nobody. It emphasizes the power money has over people's minds and perceptions. Imagine, if Batman were poor and homeless and he went around saving people in a cape and bat costume. He wouldn't be called a hero, he'd be called crazy"
"Good point," Kylo conceded "in that case, I'll say Robin Hood." Rey, satisfied with the answer, smiled and kissed him on the cheek before pulling back when the bell above the door chimed signaling the entrance of a new customer.
"You!" Finn spat as he laid eyes on Kylo "what are you doing here?"
Confused, Rey looked between Finn and Kylo. "you know each other?"
"This is the dangerous criminal I warned you about Rey, Ben Solo, the senator's son."
"No this is Kylo Ren, he lives out of town," she argued back. Out of the corner of her eye, Rey saw Kylo flinch and whirled towards him "Right?" she asked.
"I go by Kylo Ren so my past does not follow me." Kylo said looking into Rey's eyes "I don't like it when people judge me based on mistakes I made almost a decade ago." At that, he turned to glare at Finn "yes my legal name is Ben Solo, but no one has called me that in five years and-" he turned back to Rey "I am not dangerous, I did some stupid things when I was young, stupid things which I regret. Please don't hold that against me."
"So when you said you were out of work?"
"I am, and no one will hire me because of my record."
"And when you said you live out of town?"
"Technically my parents live right outside of city limits so I do live out of town."
Rey took in his answers as dozens more swirled through her mind. She couldn't help but wonder how many questions he had answered by bending the truth. Being an orphan who only had her word as her own Rey took the truth very seriously. The fact that her entire relationship with Ren had been built around half-truth unnerved her.
"Can you go?" she asked quietly, not looking at Kylo or Finn, they knew which one she was talking to.
"Rey, please-" She knew Kylo was not the type prone to begging and those two words made her want to forgive him, to ignore the half-truths, and to continue her friendship to see if it might grow to more but she stood strong.
"I have your number, I'll contact you, for now, just, please leave me alone." She kept her head down until she heard the bell over the door chime and his car pull out of the lot. "Go ahead." she said, looking at Finn "berate me, tell me you told me so."
Finn did none of that, instead, he walked around the counter and wrapped Rey in a hug "I just want what's best for you Rey." he said. A tear ran down her cheek, followed by another and another. She stood, wrapped in her best friend's arms crying, but if anyone asked her what she was crying about, she was not sure she would have an answer for them.
