Newt's POV

The return to Wolf Lake felt like being welcomed home. Newt had to apparate them to the outskirts of the town. Wards prevented apparition directly into the city.

As soon as they arrived in England he took Credence to Ollivander's shop. The older wizard had always been strange but given the awkward hour, they arrived in he was glad for it. Ollivander had been waiting for them in front of his shop.

It took over an hour for Credence to find a wand that worked for him. When he did it was a thunderbird feather and ash wood twelve inches long. Newt was happy for the younger man. It was a strong combination that would protect him.

From there they had gone straight to Wolf Lake. They chose not to drop in on Theseus given the late hour. Newt would send an owl in the morning and see if his brother was willing to meet. He wouldn't let himself get his hope's up though. The war and his change had made things difficult between them. There was a chance their relationship would never recover.

Newt would try though. After all, Theseus was the only family he had left. Their mother and father had died while he was on his travels. By the time he received an owl about it, the funeral was long past. The road was pretty much deserted so they had to walk the mile and a half to town. Credence for his part looked nervous at being in such a deserted area.

Newt didnt blame the boy. The closer they got to town the more he could feel something was off. The town was practically deserted. Normal humans who should be out and about in the evening were holed up in their houses. Across the pack bond, he could feel indecision and fear. Something was happening tonight and whatever it was it had the pack rattled.

Newt said softly to Credence, "No matter what happens stay close to me."

Credence immediately moved closer to him. There wasn't a chance for Newt to teach him basic defensive spells. If it came down to it he hoped the boy would run and leave him behind.

Upon reaching the main part of town he realized why things seemed to be wrong. The entire pack was at the inn waiting and that meant something was going on. He kept Credence behind him as they entered the inn.

Bobby who was Tyler's best friend was by the door. His arms were crossed over his chest and amber eyes glaring at a young man sitting at the bar. When Newt entered though the angry amber eyes turned on him. Then they widened with surprise at seeing him.

Bobby greeted, "Newt it's been a long time. What are you doing here? Did Tyler get a message out to you?"

Newt replied calmly not understanding, "It has been a long time. This is Credence Barebone he is under my protection right now. Credence this is Bobby Hayes he is Tyler's best friend. If you need help and Tyler or I are not around he will help you."

Bobby's hard gaze softened as he looked at the young man. There was a small nod before Bobby said, "Newt I'll look after your friend here. You should find your uncle and Tyler. Things are not good right now and the pack is on the verge of a civil war."

Civil war? What in the hell had they walked in upon? Where the fuck was Willard if they were in such disarray?

Sadness crossed Bobby's face as he no doubt heard the mention of Willard in his thoughts. Oh no. Not the old wolf. A brief barely-there nod echoed his thoughts. So the old wolf was dead and that meant they were deciding on a new clan and pack head.

That wasn't good. That wasnt good at all. Bringing a human into this chaos was dangerous. If the wrong wolf was picked as the new head both his and Credence's lives could be forfeit. Bobby was right he needed to find Tyler.

To Credence, he said firmly, "Don't leave Bobby's side until I come back. Where I'm about to go you cannot follow me for it's against pack law. I need to talk to Tyler and immediately."

To his credit Credence, didnt argue with him. All he did was softly whisper, "Hurry back and be safe, Newt."

With that, he made his way into the meeting room. That was where Tyler would be regardless of the meeting was on break or not. When he entered the room he was mostly ignored by the other wolves except by three. Tyler, his uncle Matthew, and Sherman who were in a corner all whipped their heads around to stare at him.

Newt didn't hesitate to immediately make his way over to them. His uncle greeted with an exhausted smile, "Newt we weren't expecting you."

Newt replied skipping the pleasantries, "Matt what is going on? Bobby says we are on the break of a civil war."

Tyler growled low in his throat, "Bobby needs to keep his damn mouth shut," Newt glared at the other, "Fine. Willard went out for a run and didnt come back. Sherman went to find him and found that someone shot him. It's unknown if they shot him in his wolf or human form. As you know we change back upon our deaths. The gun used is untraceable."

Damn it. So either it was a human hunting wolves or it was intentional murder. Either way, it was not looking good for the humans and wolves who called Wolf Lake home.

Blue eyes refused to meet his own green ones. Tyler was not someone to avoid confrontation with anyone. Newt might be oblivious to regular humans' feelings he always could tell what Tyler was thinking. It was part of them being destined mates and there was always something holding him back. Tyler knew that Newt was betrothed to another. Betrothal contracts especially one like his were not unbreakable. As much as his parents wanted to control him at times they would never do that to him.

Now he had a choice between two men he could understand. Gellert and Tyler. His feeling for Gellert were mixed after the insanity in New York. Things would be awkward at best between them. On top of that, he could never agree with killing muggles for the sake of killing.

Tyler wanted the pack to become stronger than it was. He didnt like regular humans but he would not outright kill them unless they were trying to hurt his pack first. Unlike the old guard who would kill humans without hesitation.

Newt questioned carefully, "Who are the runners for the new clan head?"

Matt replied tiredly, "It's between Tyler and Gerald. Vivian however is trying to convince me to run. If only to protect Luke Cates from those that would kill him."

A pointed look was sent at Tyler who snarled, "I told you I won't kill the brat as long as he doesn't challenge me. As for you taking control over the pack, it will never happen. You haven't changed from human to wolf since your wife was killed. However, if Gerald gets control over the pack it's a guarantee that Luke will die and there is no telling what will happen to Vivian. Or hell what would happen to Newt and Sophia because they have more human in them than the rest of the pack."

With that said, Tyler stormed away and for the life of him, Newt couldn't fault the other. Tyler's life had not been an easy one. What many didnt know was that he had a very similar past to Luke Cates. His father had been killed as one of the previous heads of the pack. Not yet changed he could have been murdered no one would have thought twice about it. Instead, Willard had taken the kid in and gave him a life. A chance to make something of himself. Now he wanted to do the same for Luke who just lost his father.

To his uncle, he said coldly, "I'm going to support Tyler this time. If you don't you will be putting Willard son's life in danger."

With that, he followed Tyler.
