Estela got dressed in the bathroom as always. The aqua blue eyed woman with the big, soft, brown curls couldn't explain it. Ever since she moved in with Bayley, she felt watched in every other room but the bathroom. So much that she never showed herself naked in her own bedroom.
It was only for two months. Someone at her work knew Bayley. When Estela's lease was up, they made an under the table agreement for two months. Estela thought that would be long enough. If not, they could always add to it afterwards. Bayley had said that.
The thing was that Estela and her boyfriend Drew planned on moving in together. Drew had been back in his home country Scotland for work. He worked for a whiskey company, and sometimes that job took him around the world for new recipes and business partners. Since he was Scottish and they wanted to get more Scottish whiskey into the fold, they had made a deal with different companies and sent Drew to take care of it.
When Drew left, the agreement had been for them to move in together when he returned home. The original plan had been for her to move into his apartment. That plan had changed. While being in Scotland, Drew's boss back in America had inherited a house from an uncle that died. The house was everything Drew had ever dreamed of, and he had bought it after seeing pictures of it. Something he had apologized for after since he hadn't taken into consideration if Estela wanted to live in the house or not. She loved it though. It was the right house. But she wanted to honor her agreement with Bayley for two months. She had already paid rent for both months when she moved in, and she was a woman of her word. Meanwhile Drew wanted to spend the next month cleaning up the house and fixing things where it was needed.
"I don't like it here," she mumbled to herself. "This place gives me the creeps."
She pulled her black cardigan on. The door bell sounded right after. She couldn't help but smile. She knew it was Drew. She left the bathroom and went to let in her boyfriend. She was greeted by a kiss and two strong arms that lifted her up from the ground for a few seconds.
"Hi, love," he said.
"You're happy today," she said.
"I'm always happy when I'm with you," he said.
He wrapped his arms around her again and kissed her. He backed her into her bedroom, pushed the door closed behind him and tumbled down on her bed with her in his arms. She stopped him when he kissed down her neck and started opening her jeans.
"Not here," she said. "Let's go to your place."
"What's wrong with here?" He asked.
"Bayley's coming home soon," she answered.
"So? We'll be quiet. Or at least try to," he smirked.
"Can we please go to the house? Or your apartment? I don't care where we go. I just want out of here," she said.
He raised his head with a worried look in his eyes.
"Is everything alright?" He asked.
"Not here," she said again. "Please."
"Okay, we'll leave. I had all the furniture moved to the house yesterday so there's nothing left in the apartment," he said.
He got up from the bed and pulled her up as well.
"We're gonna be happy there," he said. "It's amazing."
"It's a great house," she agreed. "I love how we have the forest right in the back yard."
"Why do you think I bought it?" He chuckled. "You're such a forest nymph. I knew that would be the one thing you would want when it comes to a house. A forest nearby. I'm gonna have to go find you in there everytime you suddenly disappear."
"I love you so much for thinking about me this way," she said.
"I love you too," he said.
He leaned down and pecked her lips.
"I crave iced coffee," he said.
"Ah yes!" She grinned. "I love you even more now. Brilliant idea."
They left the apartment. As soon as they were out on the street, she let out a sigh of relief that he couldn't help but notice.
"Seriously, what's wrong?" He asked.
"I don't know. I just feel watched in there," she answered.
"Is Bayley creeping on you?" He asked.
"I can't explain it. It feels like the only room I don't have eyes on me is the bathroom. That's why I didn't want us to have sex in the bedroom. I feel like someone's in there looking at me," she said.
"A ghost?" He smirked.
"Don't make jokes," she pushed him playfully. "It's just two months then I'm out of there for good."
"If you feel bad in there, just leave now," he said.
"Bayley's gonna go cry to Sasha and then she'll be mad at me," she said.
"So? You only see her at lunch since you're not working in the same department. You already paid Bayley. She's not missing out on the money. I support you no matter what you do. Just remember that you don't actually have to stay there a day longer."
She shrugged. She didn't feel like discussing it. She knew he was right but she had always kept her promises. Her word was her bond. It wouldn't matter in the long run if she broke it this time but it still felt weird to her to do so.
"Coffee," she smiled. "It's gonna be great with an iced coffee. It's fucking hot today."
They walked inside and ordered two iced coffees. When they walked back outside, a strange man stopped in front of them, looked at Estela and started laughing.
"I remember you," he said.
"I don't recall meeting you," she said.
"No, I watch you online. You're funny when you dance around in the kitchen," he said.
"Online?" She asked confused. "I'm sorry but you must mistake me for someone else."
"No, you're on that secret roommate site. People that film their roommates in secret," he paused. "Wait, I just messed up. It's the other one filming you. Shit, forget I said something."
Drew took a step forward and got all up in this stranger's face.
"You better start talking. Who the fuck besides you is looking at my girlfriend?" Drew growled.
They didn't get an answer. The man took off, sprinting away as fast as he could. Drew was about to run after him but Estela stopped him.
"Don't," she said.
"We need to know," he said.
"I agree but we're gonna google secret roommate cameras," she said.
She took his hand and dragged him to the nearest bench. She took out her phone and googled for those words. A few links down the site appeared.
"This is sick," he said. "People install cameras to spy on their unknowing roommates. It can't be legal."
"I'm sure there's some crazy loophole if you own the place and claim you did fill them in on it before moving in. Word against word," she said.
She clicked on a link on the site. His heart dropped when he recognized Bayley's apartment. Estela had been right in feeling eyes on her. There were cameras in every room except for Bayley's bedroom and the bathroom.
"The two rooms she uses as her personal space," she sighed. "Even a camera in my room. I knew something was wrong."
"You haven't shown them anything, right?" He asked nervously.
"I can't be sure what I've done in my sleep but I sure as hell haven't been naked in there once. I kept feeling it. Someone watching me. I was right," she said.
"That's it!" He growled. "We're going back there right now to pick up your things."
She tapped her phone a couple of times before looking up at him.
"Or we could teach her a lesson," she said.
"What are you thinking?" He asked.
"She finds you hot. She said that herself. She said she was jealous I got to share a bed with a man like you, so let's use it," she answered. "You know she's done this before and you know she'll do it again unless she suddenly becomes the star in her own sick game."
