Remus

Sirius is already disappearing through the portrait hole.

I sigh. "I'll talk to him."

"Thanks Moony, you're a champ." James gives me a grateful smile.

By the time I've left the common room, Sirius is nowhere to be seen.

That's ok; I know exactly where he's headed. There's an old beech tree down by the lake. I'll inevitably find Sirius up in its branches.

Whenever he's upset, that's where he'll go. Over the years, it's become my job to go after him. Rain? Snow? In this kind of mood, I'm not sure he even notices it. I've found him sitting on a snow covered branch, the cold soaking into his bum, too many times to count. I just coat us each in warming charms and climb right up beside him.

Anyway, I think he likes having some time to himself on his way down. A chance to stomp through the corridors. To get some of that anger out. I'm not much of a stomper myself; I think I'd spoil the mood.

We'd been heading down to breakfast, a few minutes ago, just the two of us. It's been just the two of us a lot recently. James has been spending a lot of time with Lily since the start of the year. Making up for the other six, I guess. Not that I blame him, of course. It's been good to see him so happy. And Peter? Well, it can be hard sometimes to know where Peter is these days.

So there's been a lot of me and Sirius recently. Just by default, since no one else is around. It's pretty different from the group dynamic, but... I like it. I think it's been pretty hard on Sirius, though, having to share James' attention.

Sirius thinks the Marauders are falling apart, that Lily is prying James away from us. But James is still here; he's still with us. And Sirius can't see that. If Sirius keeps this up, I'm scared his own behavior will eventually drive James away.

Anyway, we'd been heading down to breakfast, just the two of us, when we ran into Lily and James in the common room.
