You Got This
Grace adjusted her backpack and said, "Hey, what's going on?" to the group of kids gathered at the dorm entrance.
"Someone's in trouble," a tall girl offered. "I wonder who it is?"
"There's cops in the building," another student said.
Before she could ask anything further a tall brunette with glasses said, "It ain't just cops, Five-0's upstairs. I saw them myself. "
Just then a smile crossed Grace's face as the other students stepped back at the sight of a familiar figure.
"Hey, Uncle Steve!"
"Gracie." Steve reached her and she hugged him.
"Uncle Steve?" a local boy with a surfer's build whispered. "Seriously?"
"Yes, he's my uncle," she tossed over her shoulder with a grin at Steve's smirk. "Is Danno upstairs?"
"Yeah, we put the new air conditioner in, and the refrigerator."
"Awww thank you." She headed upstairs with him following.
"You're welcome, sweetheart, the bigger one fit in fine."
"Great! I really appreciate it." Grace reached her room to see her father looking around with a slightly wistful expression.
"Danno, thank you." She was enveloped in a hug as soon as she approached him.
"You're all set." He kissed her temple. "AC, refrigerator, thanks to Uncle Steve and Auntie Cath, and I left you milk and some cereal bars."
"Aww, love you." She smiled.
"Love you, and we're due back at HQ. Tell Kendra hi."
"Okay, talk to you later." She hugged both men again. "Love you, Uncle Steve." She grinned at the partners simultaneous statements of, "Be careful."

As they climbed downstairs, Steve checked a text and said, "No priors on anyone in the dorm, or the parents."
"Nice touch." Danny nodded appreciatively.
Steve nodded as they passed through a group of students surrounding a snack machine in the first floor common area.
"You really that girl Grace's uncle?" one kid asked.
"And that's her father." Steve gestured to his partner. "You're probably gonna see us around."
Several heads nodded. Mostly local kids who recognized Steve and Danny from the news or island grapevine.
"Be safe. I speak for all your parents when I say lock your doors," Danny told the group and exited the building with a glance back towards the stairs.
As they walked away they heard one of the boys say, "This is gonna be the safest dorm on campus."
They crossed the parking area and got into the car before Steve spoke. "You good?"
His normally never-quiet partner hadn't said anything on the walk back to the Camaro.
"What?" Danny's eyes moved from the direction of the dorm building to look at Steve.
"I asked if you were good. You got this."
"I miss her. It's only been a few days and I miss her so much." He scrubbed his face with both hands. "You know what I miss? It's not the things you think. It's the noise in the morning when you're off duty and hoping for another hour of sleep. The minutiae. The knowing what she wore to school that day, what she had for breakfast, what happened at cheer practice. I miss her half smile when she'd figure something out before I did and giggle at me."
Steve turned to look at his best friend when they stopped at a light. "I … yeah." He knew how much Danny missed Gracie being home, he and Catherine had made an extra effort to have him and Gabby over a few times so, 'they didn't have to cook' and he knew the time with DJ and Angie helped as he was adjusting. "I know you miss her, but she's happy and she's going to do great. She's already doing great."
Danny couldn't help but smile. "She really is, isn't she?"
"Because she's a terrific kid, and you're a wonderful dad, Danny." He meant that sincerely, he was always striving to do as good a job with his own kids. "That's how I know you got this."
"Thanks. I needed to hear that today. I'll return the favor, promise. "
"What?"
"You've got ten years, partner." Danny smiled.
"I have what?"
"Ten years. 'Til DJ starts college, and fifteen for Angie."
"Fifteen…no, she's only..."
"Three. So fifteen years and your baby girl is eighteen."
Danny's smile reached his eyes. "You know, when Rachel took Grace here, before I tied up everything in New Jersey to follow her, I felt like my heart was ripped out of my body.
"Literally like my entire heart was just… gone, and I feel a little… empty with her not being home, but you're right, she's great and I got this." At his partner's look, he nodded. "I do. I am so, so proud she's smart and strong and I'm happy because she's happy." The detective ran a hand through his hair. "And you know what I'm incredibly thrilled about?" The small smile broadened."That she chose UH, because if she moved too far away I might not have survived it."
Steve smiled his understanding and they rode a few moments in silence before Danny's phone dinged a text that he read out loud.
Thanks again, love you and Uncle Steve. Kendra and I are meeting up with Cody for lunch. Now we have a frig for the leftovers! Xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
"See, terrific kid." Steve's smile grew. "You got this."
"I promise I'll tell you the same thing. In ten years."
