Chapter 8

Training, playing with kits, death, and dusk patrols

The next morning found Reaperpaw training with Falconwind, he was practicing his fighting skills. Then he got to chase off a fox and catch a squirrel. By the time it was sunhigh he was tired so he picked a shady part of the camp to watch the new kits play in greenleaf sun. One of the kits became curious about him. The kit was a very dark gray, almost back color, she also had light blue eyes. "Hello little kit." He greeted "Hi. I'm Ebonykit." She squeaked. "I'm Nightpaw, nice to meet you." He said dipping his head. "Wanna pway mossball with me?" Ebonykit squeaked. "Sure." So he spent his sunhigh time playing mossball with a two moon old kit, bringing memories of Duskkit in to his mind. Ebonykit looked very close to Duskkit that he wondered if she was reborn but then Starclan would let him know right? After a while Ebonykit's mother called her and her siblings back to the nursery and he went to grab a mouse from the freshkill pile. He then took a nap under the shady tree. Meanwhile Beaverpaw and Chestnutpaw were playfighting not far from where he was while Leafpaw and Otterpaw were talking. Feeling comforted by the sounds of camp he drifted off. He was dreaming of playing with Ebonykit then she switched to Duskkit and they were playing hide n seek, then switched back to Ebonykit with the mossball again. This was a weird dream then he got the feeling that something was wrong and he woke up only to find Mothclaw talking to a distressed queen. She was light brown and fluffy with light green eyes. He remembered that her name was Deerwillow He angled his ears in their direction to hear better. He couldn't hear all of it but from what he heard, DeerWillow's kit Tinykit died due to kitten cough. He frowned as he felt bad for DeerWillow, it was her very first litter. So that's why my death sense went off. A kit lost it's life. He looked up to the darkening sky and told Starclan to watch over Tinykit. He remembered seeing Tinykit only once when he poked his head out of the nursery. He was silver and fluffy and very tiny with a blue eye and a hazel eye with yellow flecks. He was jolted out of his thoughts by Leafpaw who had set a squirrrel next to him. "Sorry Leafpaw I've lost my appetite." "Thinking about Duskkit again?" She asked gently. "No DeerWillow lost Tinykit." He said solemnly. "Oh poor DeerWillow." She said with a gasp. "You should eat though, Falconwind said he'd take you on the dusk patrol." She said nudging the squirrel closer to him. "Ok, I'll try." He ate half of it then let Leafpaw have the rest. By then the dusk patrol looked ready to go so he quickly cleaned his face and hurried to them noticing that Leafpaw and her mentor Maplenose who was also the deputy and Leafpaw's father join them. He had never been on a dusk patrol before, but he learned it was all about using his nose and ears. He spotted an owl flying in the sky and Leafpaw spotted a raccoon. By the time silverpelt disappeared he was wiped out and was asleep by the time he settled into his nest.
