The next day Shado has Oliver sitting down as she pours a large amount of water into a big wooden bowl. "Arm up," Shado instructs beginning her raises his arm, the back of his hand facing Shado, "palm facing me." Oliver looks at Shado feeling a bit stupid. "Hit the water."
"What?" Oliver asked slightly amused, feeling he must have misheard.
Shado nods down at the bowl with her arms behind her back. "hit the water," Shado instructs, more firmly. Oliver slaps the water. "Again." Oliver stares up at Shado for a few moments before slapping the water again. "Again harder."
Oliver raises his hand, "is this supposed to make me feel like an idiot? Cause it's working," before slapping the water as Shado sits down crossing her legs.
Shado tilts her head to the side, "A thousand mile journey begins with a single step."
"What?" Oliver breathes out, "Confucius? I'm beginning to see the family resemblance." Shado moves into a meditative position as Oliver slaps the bowl harder.
"Lao-tzu," Shado corrects, "again!" Oliver slaps the water splashing the remaining liquid from the bowl.
Oliver shrugs his shoulders, "what now?"
Shado's voice becomes sterner, authoritative. "Fill the bowl and start again." Oliver tilts his head to the side letting out a sigh. He gets up picking the bucket off the floor and fills the bowl before sitting back down in his original position. "Slap the water harder."
Slade had gone into the forest to hunt for their meal for the night as Oliver slaps the water in the bowl until it's empty and refills the bowl continuing the cycle. While Oliver does this Shado does a handstand with closed legs meditating.
Oliver looks down at the bucket showing it's empty, "I'm out of water," Oliver comments. Looking up he watches Shado continue her meditation, "my mom does yoga." Shado looks at him and Oliver quickly changes subject. "Remember when me and Slade saved you?"
"You rescued me?" Shado asked sarcastically.
Oliver sighs raising his arms, "fine. When you rescued me." Shado smiles although not seen by Oliver as she's looking at the plane floor. "You said you knew Fyers' plans. How and why he needs Yao Fei...want to search with the class?"
Shado bends a leg behind her doing a handstand cartwheel onto her feet continuing her meditation, causing Oliver to sigh. "My father used to be a Shangjiang in the People's Liberation Army, a general in English." Shado grabs a water bottle off a crate across the plane taking a large swigg before walking back over to Oliver. "I didn't hear the details but what Fyers wants my father to be the face, the scapegoat." Shado stands in front of Oliver, "he's to take the blame for them to conceal their own involvement."
Oliver briefly averts her eyes, "if Yao Fei was a general, why was he on the island?" Oliver looks up at Shado, "Fyers said Yao Fei killed people."
"No. The Chinese government committed the massacre and they needed someone to blame. They chose my father."
Oliver frowns, "that seems to be a theme for him."
Shado glares for a few moments before sighing and sitting down, "he was sentenced to this island for life...I spent years looking for him until one day some men come to my home and claim they know my father's location." Oliver sighs, opening his mouth to speak, "it was a trap. I let my guard down with my disbelief and didn't see the taser."
Shado picks up the bucket leaving for more water as Oliver stays sitting replaying Shado's words. He must have been deep in thought as he's jolted out of his thoughts at the clang of the metal bucket hitting the floor. Shado refills the bowl before getting onto her knees, "I'm worried. Worried what he must have needed to do to survive this island, that it changed him."
Oliver is momentarily silent frowning, "he's still a good man Shado, he saved my life." Shado's eyes light up in surprise then become glossy with emotion.
Shado gives a small forced smile before standing back up, hands behind her back switching to instructor. "Again." Oliver presses his lips together slapping the water hard.
Daylight turns to dusk and Slade comes through the entrance walking across the plane carrying several fish on a rope. Shado is sharpening a knife with a stone as Slade dumps the fish on a crate, "oh good...you're still doing that. Fyers better be careful with his bowls of water."
Oliver slashed the last of the water out of the bowl, "when are we going to do actual training?" Slade gives a small smile of amusement.
Shado moves closer to Oliver, not looking up as she sharpened the knife. "Once upon a time a young boy was dropped off at the Shaolin Monastery to study Kung Fu."
Oliver palms cover his eyes before removing his hands and closing his eyes, starting to lose his patience, "good, a story." Oliver whispers out.
"After a year the boy went to visit his family. The boy hung his head in shame when asked by his family what he had learned. The monks had him slap water in a barrel for a year."
Slade storms up to Shado, "we don't have a year." Slade leaned down grabbing a piece of equipment for the food, "I hope your training regimen a bit faster." Oliver watches as Slade walks back across the plane to the fish.
Shado briefly looks over her shoulder before going back to sharpening her knife, continuing the story, "the family didn't believe him so he showed them. He raised his hand and hit the table they were eating on. It broke in half."
Oliver looks at Shado doubtfully, "I'm going to be able to break a table?"
"No. You're going to be better."
Shado places the knife on a crate and walks past Oliver retrieving the longbow propped up on another crate. Oliver rolls his eyes, "how so?" Shado turns around with the bow in hand and silently gestures for Oliver to stand up and come over. Oliver lets a deep sigh in exasperation, "alright…" standing up and walking to Shado's side.
Oliver takes the bow from Shado looking at it not really sure of himself or what to do. Shado steps around holding the bow straight and correcting his posture. Once making sure Oliver knows the correct method she steps back, while Slade is busy hovering over their fire cooking their food. Oliver looks back at Shado, "draw the bow." Oliver slowly draws the bowstring back to his chin.
Slade's head bobs in disbelief before grinning, "I'll be damned" Oliver slowly eases the string back down.
Oliver turns to Shado, surprising himself, "whats next?"
Shado smiles brushing hair out of her face, "we teach you to shoot." Oliver smiles back drawing the bow again. "How to properly wield the bow in a fight."
