Chapter 8: A Series of Unfortunate Events

Challenge: for the livejournal 2020 August Fic-a-Day Challenge

Timeline: season 1 for BtVS and pre-series for SG1; storywise, it starts about 4 months or so after 'XX Origins of Buffy', Chapters 21-24

A/N: Family reunions are nice – especially these days – but they don't leave a lot of free time for writing. You'd think being on 'vacation' would leave me with plenty of time to write and respond to review, but noooo. Even though I'm posting chapters on other sites after the reunion ended, I'm keeping the chapters the same as I posted them on livejournal.

Sunnydale High

Late February

The first near miss could be considered bad luck. Just as she was about to attack the biology teacher, a student came to the door of the classroom and pulled him away for help with a paper. Which was strange considering school had been out for hours by that point. She waited and waited, but he never returned that evening.

With the second miss, she was getting a little suspicious. He just 'happened' to be called away because his apartment was on fire? Really?

The third time was a clear indication that she had picked the wrong town to mate and hatch her young. Somehow the school was infested with dozens of bats. As her nervous system went into hyperdrive and her brain went kablooey, she cursed the demon who suggested that Sunnydale would be easy pickings for her. She was too far gone to hear the shout of fear from Dr. Gregory as her body spilled out of the closet. Luckily, she was also past the point of feeling the blade swinging down and chopping her head off at the hands of the quiet librarian.

"Eww, it was a giant bug?" Buffy exclaimed in disgust when Giles mentioned his late night slayage the next day.

Giles looked up tiredly from his chair. After he had killed the creature, he went home and did research on what she could be. Well, once he dropped Gregory off at the hospital to be treated for shock that was. Interestingly, the body was gone by morning and no mention of it was made in the faculty breakrooms. Giles wasn't sure if the biology teacher would suppress what he saw or if he'd end up having another discussion concerning demons with an outsider. He shuddered to think what the Council would say if they found out. "She was a Kleptes-virgo class demon, virgin thief. They lure in virgins to sacrifice them – in her case probably during or just after sex – and use their corpses as nourishment for their young."

Buffy recoiled in horror at the thought of an adult's sex life. She knows that she and her siblings were dropped off by a stork. "You're saying Dr. Gregory was a virgin? TMI, Giles, T…M…I!"

He rolled his eyes and retorted, "I said nothing of the kind. Since we can't ask her, we don't know what her reasoning was. Perhaps she was just removing him so there was a job opening that she could fill and find young men to attract."

"Based on your description of her, I don't think she'd attract too many guys," Mark interjected. Considering his own sexual status, he breathed a sigh of relief that the demon was already gone.

"Certainly not in her natural form, but I would assume she had some sort of glamour she used," Giles explained patiently.

A/N: Giles got to shine in this one. I really wanted to get through The Pack today, but there just wasn't time.
