Of course back in the present Wei WuXian was finding the whole recollection equally hilarious, nearly rolling out of Wanji's grasp as he gasped for breath. Wanji silently sighed as he pulled him back towards him.
'Lan Er'Gege you are sooo cute sometimes, do you know that?' Wei WuXian managed between breaths
'Em' came the no committal response as Wanji still struggled to prevent Wei WuXian rolling off the pillow.
'That was a joke, and I only did it because you had immobilised me in bed.' The cheeky voice came across again as he sobered up once more.
'Em' came another no committal response before Wei WuXian decided to change his form of approach to the conversation.
'Do you remember when you visited me in the burial mounds Lan Er'gege? When we had the meal with A-Yuan and you visited my hideaway?
Wanji's face softened a little at the reminder even though his hand on Wei WuXian's hip didn't get any gentler. 'I remember' he said as if to himself 'I had hoped to see you but never thought you would have a life over there and even made yourself a family'.
Wei WuXian snuggled a little closer and spoke almost in a whisper 'you got jealous'
He wasn't expecting any response and was slightly surprised when Wanji gave a slight nod. The two then slipped into a silence where Wanji once again attempted to pick up the brush and continue marking while Wei Wuxian moved back to his own pillow reading silently. After a few moments though Wanji gave up on this for the second time and turned his face slightly towards Wei WuXian.
'That wasn't the only time I went to YiLing' he said again as if to himself
'I know' Wei WuXian replied quietly 'you went back to save A-Yuan'
'Not that' There was a silence again the room and Wei WuXian was just about to ask Wanji what was wrong when he spoke up. 'I went back for something else'
The YiLing burial mounds was eerily empty. Gone where the voices and laughter he had heard in his first visit. There wasn't even the smell of freshly turned soil or fresh vegetables. The place was completely abandoned, had been reclaimed as a place purely for the dead. Tears pricked at his eyes as Wanji looked around at once had been a happy, loving home for many old and young people. All under the honest heart of the one he himself loved and couldn't bring himself to forget.
'Wei Ying' the words found their way out of his mouth before he could stop them 'where are you?' of course no response came, no response ever came to his pleas.
Just has he was about to turn from the desolate visage Wanji's senses snapped to alert. Someone was moving around in the burial mounds. There wasn't supposed to be anyone here but him, so why was anyone moving around? Instinctively unsheathing Bichen, Wanji followed the sound into what Wei WuXian had always called his 'Demon Subdue Palace'. Memories all of a sudden began to swarm in his mind but made a conscious effort to push them away and concentrate, he needed to focus on the noise.
Eventually though he located the sound of the noise hidden behind a fallen piece of wood in the cave. Dropping Bichen he approached the small child named A-Yuan, the child was cowering and obviously suffering from starvation and lack of water. Wanji reached out to touch the child but just as his hand was about to make contact with A-Yuan's dirty clothing a deep voice was heard outside the cave. The shock of how those people could appear without him knowing momentarily made him freeze with his hand out towards the child. The voice came again but a little louder which snapped him out of his stance. This time he grabbed Bichen off of the floor with his usual grace, and whispered to A-Yuan to stay where he was, before exiting as fast as he could.
As he arrived at the mouth of the cave he noticed a large number of cultivators arriving through the forests surrounding YiLing. All were armed and all were marching with a sense of purpose directly towards the burial mounds, towards him!
Upon seeing Wanji the cultivators paused, clearly they were as surprised to he him as he was to see them! Slowly the group approached him, obviously cautious at approaching the famous HanGuang-Jun. From the group the leader appeared, a member of the Jin Sect, a sect Wanji had never particularly liked for their worldly consumption of things.
Jin Zixun stepped forwards giving his best impression of a commanding presence and actually just appearing more like an arrogant child. 'The great HanGuang-Jun what brings you to the base of the YiLing Patriach?'
Wanji wanted to remind Jin Zixun of Wei WuXian's name but decided it wasn't worth wasting his breath, instead his interest was on the group of 20-30 cultivators of his own clan that seemed to have joined in this hunt. Jin Zuxun's face a vicious shade of red when Wanji totally ignored him and instead spoke directly to the disciples of his own clan. 'What are you doing here?'
Jin Zixun spoke up again, this time a lot less polite. 'We are here to clear YiLing of the scourge that was Wei WuXian. Do you intend to get in our way HanGuang-Jun'. This time the title of HanGuang-Jun was said with almost a sneer.
Wanji as always didn't allow any of his inner emotions to show either on his face or in his voice as he responded with a commanding sentence 'You are not qualified to speak to me'
This had had the intended effect on Jin Zixun who unsheathed his sword and launched himself at Wanji without thinking. Of course Wanji was easily able to deflect the attack and soon Jin Zixun was totally on the defensive. It was about then when things completely went downhill and all the other cultivators in attendance attacked him. Despite him fighting against other cultivators and even those of his own clan it never once crossed Wanji's mind not to defend his position. These people where here to attack Wei WuXian's home, these people had already killed Wei WuXian once and could not even leave his spirit in peace. On top of that A-Yuan was hidden in the cave, A-Yuan who had once been such a bright spirit and was now almost dead thanks to the people outside. Fury surged through Wanji, for once he never tried to supress it has it fed Bichen's force and rage.
Almost before he realised what had happened the fight was over. Cultivators were scattered in a wide circle at his feet, either injured or dead. The disciples of the Lan clan where included in there number but at that moment Wanji didn't feel anything towards them. Despite winning the fight he just felt worn out, tired and furious at the world. It had taken him no short amount of self-control not to hack away at the bodies of the fallen just to vent his anger, and even more self-control to force himself to put down Bichen.
Jin Zixun was one of the few who survived the onslaught unscathed only to stare at Wanji with unhidden loathing before running again into the thick jungle and relative safety. His anger reseeding slowly the pain began to encroach into his consciousness. It was then that he realised he was actually injured with blood running freely from an assortment of wounds. A-Yuan…..he had to get A-Yuan to safety, he had to get him out of this place, away from here.
