20. Accident
The rest of the week sped forward. The rest of the students in band class were still not talking to me, but I let that not bug me. Jazz band started the following week, as did helping her coach the elementary school choir.
I woke up as Carlisle got in from his night shift at the hospital. He always struggled with sleeping after a night shift, so we went on a run.
"So what's her name?" Carlisle teased
Was I really that easy to read?
"I don't know what you are talking about, Dad" I insisted, but I knew he wasn't fooled
"Please?" He said, trying to hide his obvious curiosity.
I sighed heavily. I couldn't keep things from him or Alice, and I already told Alice everything. It wouldn't be fair to keep him out too.
"Her name is Bella Swan. She just moved here from Phoenix. She's in my bio class and pre calc class. Her dad is the chief of police, her mom doesnt work, and her step dad is a MLB player on the Texas Rangers. She wants to be a publisher and move to New York. She only moved here cause her mom wants to travel with her husband and Bella didn't want to be homeschooled"
Carlisle was silent, seeming proud he got me to talk. I tried not to look at him.
"Have you asked her out yet?" He asked
I stared at him, dumbfounded, "No, I can't"
"Why?" He demanded, "You have been texting her all weekend"
"She doesn't like me that way" I admitted
"You don't know that. You were totally unaware of Tanya until Rose spelt it out for you"
"She's interesting. She's pretty. She has goals in life" I rolled my eyes, "And people don't like me. I thought we already decided I am moody and impossible to live with"
"Just because Rosalie and Jasper don't particularly like living with you doesn't mean you are hard to live with" Carlisle defended me
"You are just saying that because you are stuck with me forever" I tapped my adoption ring, teasing him "You would have sent me to live with someone else by now if you were not obligated to take care of me"
He stopped abruptly, his face serious.
"Edward" He said like he was pained by the idea of me not living here
"Son, you know we all love you. We wouldn't change anything about you"
I laughed, "Really, you wouldn't make it so I could see an airplane without hyperventilating?"
He didn't think I was funny. He shook his head, still looking pained.
"You're our little Eeyore; You are perfect how you are"
He seemed so sure of that. I looked away, embarrassed by his praise.
We ran back to the house then. I whined about the unit of biochemistry. Carlisle laughed at me and went into an in dept lecture about why I needed to know biochemistry to properly understand biology. His and Esme's love for learning was annoying.
When we got back Rosalie was sitting on the couch crying. Esme had her arms wrapped around her.
"Awe. Did Emmett dump you for the newest head cheerleader?"
"Edward," Esme snapped. I stared at her in confusion; she never snapped at me.
"Emmett was in an accident" Rose said in between sobs
So I definitely deserved Esme's tone.
"I'm so sorry Rosie" I said, for once trying to be nice to her
"He's fine, physically. H-His parents died though, and he's going to have to drop out of school. He'll have to work full time at a dead end job. He will have to grieve by himself…" She trailed off.
I looked at Esme and I automatically hated the expression in her face. She was too empathetic, and she hated to see anyone in pain. Dragging Rosalie from her boyfriend was not something Esme wanted to do, and if she could bring him here to help so he wouldn't have to drop out of school…
I turned to look at Carlisle, but his face was full of the same compassion as Esme's.
That afternoon, Esme and Rosalie went to pick Emmett up at the airport. They had already redesigned Jasper's room so there would be enough room for the two of them.
Jasper and Emmett were always good friends, and as much as I tried to hate Emmett I really couldn't. He was a good person. His optimism was contagious. As soon as he started dating Rosalie he started coming over almost every day after football practice, and he was a good person to have around.
He was not vegan, but he never complained about our vegan food. Jasper always struggled with veganism, but he understood the ethical reasons behind it. I wondered if Emmett would too.
My phone buzzed, and I had an unread text from Bella,
Hey, Where are you?
It's a long story, I texted back, But someone from Alaska is moving in with us.
Is she prettier than me?
I smirked, pleased that I could somehow make her jealous.
He's not really my type I typed back
Haha Bella wrote back,
"Oh my God Edward. Ask her out or I will for you" Alice rolled her eyes from behind me, "She is all over you"
"No she's not," I snapped, "Go away"
But Alice came around to the front of me and scratched my phone. Carlisle and Jasper both leaned over her shoulder to read our messages
"Oh my freaking God" Jasper said and laughed, "I thought Ali was being dramatic"
Carlisle took the phone then and began typing.
"What are you doing?"
"What you are too scared of doing" He snapped back, smiling at whatever he was typing. He held the phone above my head so I couldn't snatch it out of his hand. Alice and Jasper both looked pleased at what he was writing, but they were blocking my view from it. My phone buzzed whenever he stopped typing.
Jasper gasped and smiled, and Alice clapped her hands like a cartoon character. Carlisle looked pleased and smug as he handed me back my phone
E: What are you doing tonight?
B: Nothing, you?
E: Nothing. Do you want to come over after school? My family is going out so I have the house to myself
B: It's a date 3
"You should probably text her our address," Carlisle said, staring at me smuggly.
"What the hell am I going to do now?" I said, "You're all going to be here. Not really the best environment for… whatever you just set up"
"We are going to show Emmett the rest of Forks"
"He's probably going to want to be alone. His parents just freaking died! And you are going to drag him around town because you think this girl likes me?"
"How is he in this much denial" Jazz murmured
"Emmett is also in denial" Carlisle clarified, "He asked Rosalie to take him around town and to show him the high school"
I groaned. I knew I wasn't getting out of this.
I texted Bella my address, and tried not to hyperventilate and I imagined how many ways this night could go wrong.
