About an hour after Frasier went into Nora's hospital room, Nora began to moan. When she was finally able to open her eyes, she looked at her husband with great confusion.
"How do you feel darling?" Frasier asked softly.
"Tired," Nora slurred.
"When you're more awake, we will explain everything to you."
"Kay," Nora said as she fell back asleep.
It took two days for Nora to be more alert, "Frasier, what happened to me?" Nora slurred her words and sometimes had difficulty finding them.
Frasier was sitting by her bed, holding her hand, "you had an infection in your heart. You needed to have one of your heart valves replaced with a mechanical one. The infection went untreated for so long that it caused a stroke. Before you panic, the doctor is optimistic about a complete recovery."
Nora sat in the bed shocked, "I had a stroke?"
"Yes, that's why you're having difficulty with your speech."
Nora sat there trying to think about what she wanted to say. Frasier saw the distressed look and became concerned, "I just can't find the words. I can't think of what I wanted to say."
"That's alright, darling. Just rest for now."
Nora spent a month in the hospital before being released. She needed a walker for the time being, but all in all, she was doing fine. The infection in her brain would take a couple of months to go away and a few more months for the symptoms to leave. Her body was accepting her new heart valve. With all of this, the woman had no idea how living with six young children would work. Frasier had asked John if he could stay with them for a little while. John was more than happy to and told his business partners that he was taking time off indefinitely.
"Hey sweetheart," John said as he entered the living room where Nora was sitting, "I made some lunch. Are you hungry?"
"A little," Nora began to scoot closer to the edge of the couch. She was able to pull herself up with her walker. John stayed with his daughter all the way to the kitchen, "daddy, I think I need help sitting." John walked over and helped his daughter to sit on one of the kitchen chairs, "thank you. Where are the girls?"
"They already ate," Everyone had been keeping the girls away from Nora and it was really pissing her off.
"When I'm done eating, will you walk with me to the, um," Nora tried to think, "playroom so I can see them?"
"There really isn't anywhere for you to sit in there. Besides Frasier took them out."
"Why are you all keeping them from me?"
"We just don't want you getting upset when they ask you to play or something. Plus, we are trying to keep you from getting hurt."
When Nora had finished her lunch, John helped her to stand, "you tired?"
Nora was having trouble staying upright, "a little," Nora grabbed her walker and John held on tightly as they made their way to the living room. He helped his daughter lie down and covered her with a blanket.
"Now, when you wake up don't even sit up without help. Got it?"
Nora smiled, "yes sir."
Nora woke up and saw her sons sitting in the living room. "Hey," she smiled.
"Hi, mama," Tony said.
"How do you feel?" Charlie asked.
"I'm okay," Nora said, "can one of you find daddy or pop for me please?"
"Sure thing mama," Tony said as he got up to find one of the men.
"You have a nice nap, darling," Frasier said as he entered the living room.
"Yeah, can you help me sit up?" Nora asked, and her husband did. "Frasier, I want to see the girls."
"Your father talked to me about it. The infection in your brain hasn't completely gone away and I was just trying to protect you."
"I know and I love you for that, but I feel worse not being able to see them."
"You want to try and help me with bedtime tonight?"
Nora smiled, "I'd love that."
Nora couldn't climb the stairs very well yet, so Frasier would carry her up and down them. Nora was so light that it didn't bother him. Nora helped Frasier tuck the girls in. Frasier had to hold onto his wife as she bent down to kiss her daughters. The girls would kneel on the bed, but Nora still had to bend to reach them.
"Thank you, darling. That really made me happy," Nora said as Frasier joined her in bed.
"I'm glad," Frasier kissed his wife before taking her in his arms as they fell asleep.
