When Fred and George had purchased the Diagon Alley storefront to start their joke shop, Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, they had not expected it to take up so much of their time. Between dealing with the customers, inventing new products for the shop, and helping the Order of the Phoenix, they kept busy. Most days it felt like they didn't have time to have any sort of a social life or really any sort of life outside the shop. It was on one such stressful day when George had his brilliant idea.
"Gred," said George as he and Fred were stacking shelves. "I have come up with a brilliant idea."
"And what is this brilliant idea of yours, Forge?"
"We should hire an assistant," said George triumphantly. "We have too much on our plate to run this shop completely on our own."
"I think you're right, twin of mine," Fred replied.
"So it's settled. We'll write up an ad tonight and post it on the shop's window tomorrow morning."
Fred nodded in agreement, and the twins continued working.
The next morning, as Verity Clark was running some errands in Diagon Alley, she came across the twin's ad in the joke shop window. Although Verity had no experience assisting in a shop, she needed the money. Her mother had just lost her job, and her family had already been struggling financially after her father's death three years ago. Since her two other sisters were still too young to have jobs, she knew it was up to her to help out her family. With that in mind, verity stepped into the shop.
As soon as she entered, her eyes and ears were assaulted by all the noise and bright colors. One of the twins came up to her, but she couldn't tell which since she didn't know them that well. They had been in the same year at Hogwarts, but she was a Hufflepuff and had a very different group of friends than they did.
"Welcome to Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, I'm Monsieur Fred. Would you be interested in buying something from our Wonder Witch collection?"
"I'm really sorry, but I'm not here to buy anything,'' said Verity. "I'm here about the ad."
"Not to worry, not to worry, right this way…What's your name?" Fred asked.
"Verity, my name is Verity Clark."
"Well, Verity, let me lead you to the back and you can speak to my brother George. He's the one taking care of the hiring process right now."
They walked to the back in a companionable silence until they reached a small room.
"Good luck Verity," said Fred with a smile.
She thanked him as she stepped into the small room in the back where George was sitting.
"Good morning, Sir."
"Call me George. Sir makes me feel like an old man, And I am not old." Said George with a laugh.
"Sorry, good morning, George. I'm here to apply to be your assistant."
The interview went very well. So well that she was hired that exact same day. Her job was simple enough: Interact with the customers, manage the cash register, and help clean up. The Twins were also very good employers. Whenever she needed help with anything, they were right there; especially Fred.
"So Verity, Said Fred one day as they were stacking shelves, what is the best prank you've ever played?"
"oh, actually, I've never played a prank." "Fred drop the box he was holding making instant Peruvian Darkness powder fly everywhere.
Verity couldn't see his face in the darkness, but she could imagine Fred's Shocked face as she said those words.
"what do you mean you've never played a prank?"
"I've just never played a prank.""
"This is blasphemy! how are you the assistant at the best joke shop in the world and you've never played a prank?"
"I've just never really had the time." Verity said looking in Fred's general direction.
"Well, that changes today." Said Fred taking Verity's arm. "Fred, where are we going?" Verity asked as Fred dragged her along to Merlin knows where. He didn't answer, just kept walking.
Finally, Fred open the door and they stepped inside. As her eyes adjust did, Verity realized that they were in the twin's office where they conducted their experiments of new products. "welcome Verity Clark To your first day of Fred's pranking for beginners class."Said Fred Conjuring up a quill and some parchment which he stuck onto the wallin front of her. "Today's lesson, finding the perfect target."
For the next couple of weeks, Fred and birdie continued their prank lessons whenever and they had a bit of downtime together. Verity had to admit, she was having a lot of fun with Fred, And she would never say it out loud end inflate his ego, but he was actually a pretty good teacher.
"well Verity, Said Fred one day as they entered the I think its time for your first real assignment."
"And that is?" Verity asked looking at him expectantly.
"Using everything that I've taught you, You will have to prank George. It will not be easy, but I am confident you can do it."
"okay boss, Verity said laughing, I will not let you down."
A thought struck Verity then. One of the major roles of pranking was do something the person will not expect. What if she pranked both Fred and George? She knew it would be difficult pranking not just one prankster but too, But she was confident in her abilities.
She spent the week coming up with something good that the twins would not expect. One night as she was sitting in her flat, an idea struck her. It was simple yet genius, and Verity was internally kicking herself for not thinking of it sooner. Fred and George wouldn't know what hit them.
That morning, Verity woke up in a very good mood. She went into work Like she always did. She didn't want any of them thinking something was up, that was another major rule of pranking. Never look too obvious. Soon, it was time for lunch and time for Verity to put her plan into action.
"so, what do you guys want me to get for lunch this time?" George asked Looking at Fred and Verity.
"Actually guys, my mom made Her famous chicken and potatoes last night, I bought some, and there's enough to go around." Verity said pulling out 3 containers and three bottles of lemonade.
She noticed Fred trying to inconspicuously check the food Prefer any spells or potions that could have possibly have been put in it. noticing nothing, everybody began to dig in. After a couple of seconds the twins started yelling. "bloody hell!" They exclaimed in unison. "what boys, can't handle a bit of spice?" Verity said mockingly. "Of course we can." said fred indignantly. The two boys continued eating. Verity smirked to herself, her plan was going perfectly. The Twins were quick to guzzle down the lemonade when they were done eating. "told you we can handle it." said Fred in a high pitch voice. "My voice! What did you do to my voice?" George began to laugh, then stopped realizing that his voice had also changed.
At this, Verity began to laugh falling out of her chair. "this isn't funny." said Fred in his high-pitched voice. "I told you to prank George, not me and George." This made Verity laugh even harder. "but you never told me not to prank you either."
"she got you there Fredy." George said. Verity got up, and still laughing she went back to work. the twins did not come back to work for the rest of the day. Probably devising a Revenge plan Verity thought.
She finally saw Fred emerge as she was locking up the shop. Well played." he said. His normal voice had returned and he was smiling. "You Pranked the pranksters. How did you do it?" "well," she said Turning to him with a laugh, a good prankster never reveals her secrets."
With that, Verity walked out of the shop. She had done it, She had pranked the pranksters. She was definitely not letting go of this anytime soon.
