Linda pulled the car into the parking lot. Today was Phineas's first ever sporting event; the Danville Vultures - Danville's lone professional baseball team - was playing their first game, and Linda was eager to give his infant son and adolescent daughter a fun day. "We're here!" She shouted in a sing-songy tone. "So Phineas, are you ready for your first baseball game?"
The infant, wearing a baseball cap, looked at his sister, and then at his mother, and he started clapping and laughing. "Phineas, you have no idea what's going on, do you?" Candace joked.
"No I don't Candy." He responded. They all got out of the car and walked towards the entrance gates of the stadium. As they approached the gates, Linda reached into her pocket and pulled out three tickets, handing them to the security guard. They found their seats, which were right next to the first base dugout.
"OK, we're here." Linda said as they each took a seat. They put Phineas in the seat next to Candace. "Phineas, do you want anything?"
Phineas simply giggled and clapped his hands. Candace handed her a flag with the team's logo on it and he began waving it around happily, with almost no idea what was going on. Linda and Candace sat down and watched as the teams started coming out of the dugout. As the crowd cheered, Phineas cheered with them. He babbled happily.
"I think Phineas is having fun." Candace remarked, noting Phineas's laughter.
"I think you're right, Candace."
When the home team came to bat for the first time, Phineas cheered right along with the crowd. "Go! Go! Go!" He shouted, still with no understanding of what was happening. When the batter swung at the first pitch, he fouled it off. It careened right into the stands and managed to land into Phineas's lap. The crowd cheered loudly as Phineas looked down at the ball in his lap. He whined, not understanding what was happening.
"Hey, look Phineas! You got a ball!" Candace said, picking up the ball and handing it to the boy. "Lucky you." Phineas only looked up at his sister, who was beaming. He was still confused.
As the player who hit the ball went back to the dugout, Phineas stood up in his seat and started waving his arm trying to get his attention. "Wait! Mister! Wait! Ball!" He shouted repeatedly, but the drowning noise of the crowd made it impossible for him to be heard. Phineas frantically turned to his sister. "Candy! That man! He forgotted the ball!" He held the ball up to her face and waved it frantically, attempting to establish his point.
"No Phineas, that's your ball." She smiled warmly and kissed him on his forehead.
"No! I didn't come with this ball! It came from that man! It's that man's ball! And I gotta give it back!" He stood up from his seat and raced towards the stairs and ran down them.
"Phineas!" Candace and Linda got out of their seats and chased the infant boy. But he was too quick on his feet. At the end of the stairs, he leaped with all his might and landed on the dugout roof. He leaped off the roof and landed on the grass. He turned to the dugout where the players were getting ready to retake the field.
"EXCUSE ME!" He screamed at the top of his lung, gaining their attention. Up in the bleachers, Candace and Linda got a security guard to lead them onto the field to retrieve the infant. "Whose ball is this?" He held up the ball and waited for someone to answer. But the players didn't quite comprehend Phineas' question, and so they exchanged confused glares at each other.
Candace, Linda, and a security guard arrived in front of the dugout. "Phineas!" Linda shouted. "Come over here right now young man!"
Phineas turned to his mother. "No! I can't, Mommy! I gotta give somebody back the ball! It's not my ball!"
"Yes it is, Phineas. That's what we've been trying to tell you!" Candace argued.
"No! I didn't come with the ball! I found the ball when I was here, but it's not my ball! And if I taked this ball then somebody wouldn't have the ball and then they would be sad! I don't want nobody to be sad!"
"Is this your son?" One of the players asked as he stepped out of the dugout and approached the boy.
"Yes, yes he is." Linda answered. "I'm so sorry. It's just-"
"Son, you found my ball!" He said, deciding to play along with Phineas after realizing he didn't fully understand what was happening. He picked Phineas up and held him in his arms. "I've been looking all over for that. Where'd you find it?"
"I dunno." Phineas answered truthfully. He held the ball out to the player. "Here you go, mister."
The player chuckled. "Thanks, son. Say, since you're down here, you wanna stick around for a while?"
"No! I can't! I gotta go back to Mommy and Candy!" He waved his arms rapidly. "Put me down, please!"
"You know what? I got the perfect place for you and your family."
