"You know what I really wanna do?" Tsukasa said, grinning from ear to ear.
"What is it?" Amane asked.
" I wanna see the ocean!" He laughed, playing with his little toy submarine.
Amane frowned. "You see the ocean every day."
"I wanna see what it looks like underneath!" The boy said cheerily. "It's probably even more beautiful than the outside."
"It could be." Amane shrugged.
"I'm gonna do it Amane!" His twin said, jumping up and down with excitement.
"Sure!" Amane laughed.
~Some years later~
"Beep. Beep." The morning alarm sounded.
"Ugh." Amane groaned, hesitant to get up. Hearing his father call breakfast, he leaped straight out of bed. He performed his usual morning routine, which consisted of brushing his teeth, showering, getting dressed, etc. Before he left his room, he picked up the little toy submarine off of his bed stand. It was his brothers' favorite toy and the last thing he had of him. He walked downstairs, lost in thought.
"Amane!" Tsukasa called out to him from the beach.
"Yeah," Amane yelled back, running to him.
"Let's go for a swim!" His brother leaped around happily.
"Good morning!" His father said heartily, snapping him out of his head. He was a tall man with handsome features and black hair. Everyone said Amane looked like a younger version of his dad. He couldn't care either way.
"Morning, dad," Amane yawned.
"The bus will be here in a few minutes, so I'm not sure how much time you'll have to eat." His father said.
"It's alright." Amane shrugged. "I'm not that hungry." He said, walking to the door, ready to leave.
His father shook his head, "I put some lunch money in your backpack."
"Thanks," Amane replied, walking out the door before his father could say anything else. He would rather wait outside for the bus than be in that stuffy house. If he stayed too long, his mother would wake up. Ever since his brother died, his mother couldn't stand to look at him. It had been six months since that day. He felt like his mother would never forgive him. His heart hurt thinking about that day. The bus came just in time to save him from his thoughts. He hopped on, not wanting to linger home any longer. The ride to school felt long. It was his first day, so he knew no one. He missed his old school horribly, but couldn't imagine being there without Tsukasa. Maybe, it was a good thing his family moved. "New beginnings," he mumbled to himself. Once the bus arrived at school, he got out as fast as possible. The bus was almost as stuffy as his home was. He liked the freedom of outside. He felt like he could breathe. Amane was startled out of his thoughts when he bumped into someone. "I'm sorry," the girl he bumped to bowed.
"No, it was my fault." He said, getting up.
"Are you new?" She asked after getting a good look at his face. "I've never seen you around."
"Yeah. I just transferred in." He nodded.
"I'm Yashiro Nene!" She said, sticking her hand out.
Amane shook her hand. "Yugi Amane."
"So, where are you from?" Nene asked.
"Just the next town over." He shrugged. "Wait!" Amane paused. He looked at his hand, realizing the submarine was missing.
"What's wrong, Amane?" Nene asked, concerned.
"Where did it go?" he muttered to himself. Amane looked frantically around him. Nene took a step forward, and he heard an ear-splitting crack. In less than a second, his heart tore into pieces. "Move!" He yelled, shoving her to the ground. The submarine was in little bits. Shaking Amane got up running away from the school. His whole world had fallen apart. He kept going as fast as he could, his hand clutched tightly to his chest.
"The water is so cool!" Tsukasa said. "Just what we needed on a hot summer day."
"Yeah." Amane sighed, floating like he didn't have a care in the world.
"Let's see how far I can go underwater, K?" Tsukasa said.
Amane shook his head. "You really wanna like underwater that bad, huh?"
"Yup!" Tsukasa grinned.
"Fine." Amane sighed, focusing on relaxing once again.
"Count for me," Tsukasa said before he dived in.
Amane sighed. "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15." Tsukasa hadn't come up. "Tsukasa?" Amane called to the water, of course getting no response. Amane dived in after his brother. He couldn't swim nearly as well as him, but he would try his best. The further he went, the less he could see. He started running out of air and came out of the water in a panic. His brother could hold his breath a lot longer than he could. Tsukasa was fine. He was going to be fine. He went back into the water, continuing the search for his brother. Suddenly he felt empty like he had a huge hole in his heart. He came up for air once more but found that he couldn't breathe even though his head was above water. He struggled back to shore and burst into tears. He felt sick to his stomach. Tsukasa couldn't be gone. The empty feeling couldn't be mistaken, though. Amane had lost his best friend and his other half.
Amane found himself sitting under a tree in a park somewhere. He was devastated and completely lost. After a minute of crying, he gathered his bearings and found out where he was. He called his father, asking if he could pick him up. There were no words said during the car ride, and no questions were asked just silence. Once Amane got home, he ran to his room and locked himself in it. That's where he stayed for the rest of the week. He would only come out to eat, avoiding both his mother and father thoroughly. He would've continued that way for another week, but his father forced him out of bed on Monday, insisting that he needed to get out of the house and back to school. As much as he didn't want to, he attended school like he was told. The day had been uneventful until he ran into that girl again. Amane blindly bumped into her, knocking everything out of her hand. "Sorry." he apologized.
"It's ok," she said, looking up at him. "Amane?"
Amane scowled at her, still upset. "Yeah."
"Great! I thought that something might've happened." She sighed, relieved.
"What was your name again?" He asked. Amane was annoyed but decided to stay amicable.
Shrugging off the tension, she smiled. "Yashiro Nene!" She said, introducing herself again. "I'm sorry for breaking your toy. It must be precious."
Amane sighed. "It was."
"Here!" She said, holding out her hand.
Amane looked into her palm, and there he saw the little submarine once again in one piece. He was at a loss for words. "B-but, how?" was all he managed to get out.
"Well, I have a friend who loves fixing stuff, so I asked him to have a go at it! Plus the submarine is so pretty it would be a waste to see it go to waste." Nene smiled.
Amane pulled her into a tight hug and burst into tears. "Thank you." He cried. People were watching, but he could care less. After what felt like forever of him crying, he whispered, "I-i'm sorry I pushed you like that."
"It's alright! I forgive you!" She said happily. "Does the submarine look good?"
"It's perfect!" He smiled. It was the first time he had genuinely smiled since his brother had passed away.
"Do you like the ocean?" She asked.
"Yes." he giggled, staring at the toy in his hand, thinking of his brother playing with it once again.
"I do too!" Nene clapped. "Let's go to the beach one day!" Amane's eyes lit up. "Ahhh!" she suddenly yelled before he could say anything. "Class started!" She said, jumping up. Amane looked around, noticing the empty halls. "Come on!" She grabbed his arm, pulling him through the hallway. Who would've guessed Tsukasa's toy submarine would start a friendship that would last forever.
