Episode 1 Part 3

In one of the last cars that departed the farm, the occupants were not worried, or concerned, they were frantic, horrified. The driver was a young woman of twenty-eight, she stood just above medium height, with deep brown eyes and curly brown hair down to her shoulders, she had full pretty lips, pale skin and a slender build. She wore a grey pencil skirt; white blouse; black tights and grey flats.

Her name was Katia and in the back seat were a brother and sister duo that she had taken under her care.

First was Kalina; a tiny, sweet faced nine year old girl with thick long brown hair tucked under a beanie; chocolate brown eyes and olive skin, as well as being skinny, calf in black pants; a pink T-shirt; an unzipped white jacket; a white beanie and white sneakers and was in tears.

The other was an older boy, around fourteen or fifteen with olive toned skin, brown eyes, dark brown hair and a deep accent, he was above medium height and had a slender lanky build. He wore a pair of black jeans; a blue and white striped shirt; and black sneakers. Kalina's older brother Grozdan, who was currently holding up his left hand, horrified, the blood from the bite mark on it plain for all to see.

They all knew what it meant, while they had learned that once they were dead, unless the brain was destroyed they'd turn into those shambling living corpses they called Walkers, if you were bitten, it was essentially a death sentence. You'd turn into one, without really needing to die in the first place.

"K-Katia..." Grozdan whispered, eyes wide, trembling.

Kalina was almost inconsolable. "Grozdan, Grozdan no."

She didn't want to lose her brother. Katia's heart tightened, she had come to care for both of them almost like her own, despite the difficulties it had caused for Grozdan, they had been overcoming them, only for this to happen.

"We...hold on, we'll stop here, let's get out the car and, and we'll think...There must be something we can do." She explained quickly.

She pulled over, just off the dirt road they had been following and got out the car. She hurried to the back and opened the door, gently guiding Grozdan and Kalina out.

Trying to keep her voice steady she spoke. "Okay, let...let me see it."

Biting his lip, trying to stay calm, without much success, Grozdan held out his hand. Katia examined it and her heart sank. There was no mistake, it was a bite alright. It was then another car pulled up behind them, they all looked up as the driver got out.

It was Anton, the owner of the farm they had to flee when the heard attacked. He was an older, bald gentleman with kindly brown eyes and a moustache, he looked to be late fifties at the least, maybe sixty, broad shouldered but with a normal build and fair skin, clad in black pants; a white shirt; grey pullover and black shoes.

He had wondered why they had stopped and had seen their distress as he got out his car.

"What's going on?" He asked worriedly.

Katia bit her lip. "It's, it's Grozdan…

Grozdan finally let the tears he'd been holding back fall as Anton's eyes landed on his bitten hand.

"God, he…?"

Grozdan let out a choked sob. "Please, I...Kalina needs..."

"No Grozdan." Kalina cried, hugging him. "Don't leave me!"

Katia felt her heart break at that while Anton moved closer.

"Let me see please." He said.

Grozdan held out his hand and examined it carefully, noting the bite.

"And this happened as you were fleeing the farm, so not that long ago." He mused. "Hmmm, well, it...it won't be easy, in fact, it's horrible, but, there might be a way to-"

He stopped, turning, as did the others, Katia gasping, for at that moment, they heard footsteps, rustling and then finally, a man emerged from the trees. He was a tall man with thick brown hair with a matching beard, brown eyes, he also had fair skin and wore glasses. He wore black pants; a dark grey shirt and black shoes.

"I thought I heard people talking." He said. "I'd all but given up seeing anyone alive, I-"

He stopped suddenly, eyes going wide. It took Katia only a second to realize, he'd seen Grozdan's hand. Then the man had his gun out, aimed at Grozdan.

Katia reacted at once, getting between them, startling the man.

"Are you crazy?" He snapped. "The boy's bitten, he needs to..."

Katia shook her head. "No, I can't let you do that."

"He'll become one of those things, he needs to be put down." The man snarled.

Kalina clung to Grozdan at that, wailing. "No, leave my brother alone!"

Katia shook her head. "Please, listen, um..."

"Bruno."

"Bruno, just, put the gun down. Anton, you were going to say something, what was it?" Katia tried to reason.

"I was going to say." Anton said cautiously. "That he can be saved."

They all froze at that, startled.

Then Bruno glared. "Don't talk nonsense, he's bitten, he'll become one of them, there's no cure."

"I never said it would cure him." Anton said with a heavy sigh. "As I said, it won't be easy, in fact, horrible. But...I can save Grozdan. I have everything I'll need in the back of my car but..."

"What, what are you talking about?" Grozdan asked warily.

Anton shook his head. "You were bitten on your hand, nowhere else. It wasn't that long ago you got bit. So the infection is only in your hand right now. We can save your life but only if...we amputate the infected hand."

Stunned shock and silence fell after that as they took in Anton's words.

Katia almost couldn't believe it, but Anton was right, the thought of it was horrible. Anton continued to explain to her and Bruno about how it would work. They'd obviously need to keep Grozdan quiet, prepare everything to cauterize such a wound, as well as keep it clean and bandaged up. It would take some effort, but they would be able to save him.

Hearing all this talk, Kalina turned to her brother. "Grozdan, what's going on?"

Grozdan bit his lip; shaking his head when he saw the looks on the adults faces.

"No, she deserves to know the truth." He explained. "It's...They can save me Kalina, I won't become one of them. But...to do it, they need to remove my hand."

"What?" Kalina gasped.

"It's the only way." He told her, hugging her tightly, careful not to get blood on her. "Katia, could you...make sure Kalina is, distracted. I don't want her to see this."

Katia nodded gently and took Kalina's hand, guiding her around to the front of the car, doing her best to distract the girl while Grozdan went with Anton and Bruno. Staying with Kalina, Katia had no idea how much progress was being made until Grozdan let out a scream, muffled by some sort of gag she guessed, she held Kalina close and just prayed that they'd find out before long if Grozdan would indeed survive.
