Episode 2 Part 1
As the new day dawned, the survivors tried to regroup.
"Okay...we need to think now, what are we going to do?" Niko said. "We had no time to grab anything from the farm really. We only have whatever we had stashed in the cars, we better check."
The others nodded in agreement and soon they began searching their cars, during which they noticed another problem. Returning to the foot of the monument, they set up what they had and Niko sighed.
"Right, so...we need more supplies, food, ammo...maybe even warmer clothing, it'll be winter before long." He remarked.
Arica shook her head. "That's not all, the car's out of gas."
Zlata bit her lip. "So is mine."
There were a few more murmurs and they soon realized that they had all run out of gas, clearly only just making it to the monument.
"Okay then, guess we need to get gas too." Marin added.
Niko nodded. "It looks like it, otherwise we'll...we'll have to just, walk."
"Walk?" Marko gasped.
Pavle sighed. "Niko's right, we will need to walk if we don't get any gas...Even if it's not our best option, without gas it would be our only one."
The others shared worried looks but soon they were all in agreement and began to prepare themselves to split into groups and scavenge nearby for anything that they could find that would be useful.
Mara however found herself facing a dilemma.
"Misha, are you sure, I mean, this is dangerous and-"
"I know, I know." He said softly. "But I wanna help, I...I wanna at least be useful, I..."
Mara sighed. "You don't need to explain anymore, sweetheart."
She knew right away what this stemmed from. Ever since his kidnapping, Misha had felt terrible, as if he actually was, as Eli claimed, dead weight. He had spoken before of wanting to do something to help out and now he was offering to go with Mara and Roman to help scavenge, despite the obvious dangers. All the other kids were staying at the monument with Henrik, Anton, Cveta and Katia. Katia had especially chosen to remain behind to watch over Grozdan who was still recovering.
"So long as we're very careful and he stays close." Roman told Mara. "We can watch out for him."
Mara bit her lip but sighed. "I...alright, I don't like it, but alright."
So it was that they left, along with the other scavenging groups, splitting up to begin their search for supplies. As they walked Roman noted Mara's expression and shook his head.
"I know it's hard Mara, but there's little we can do but keep moving forward, for everyone's sake." He told her.
Mara sighed. "I know, but still. To think of the kids having to endure all this, to not have a chance to be kids...to see what happened to Grozdan and for the kids to see it too. For them to realize what could happen to them if..."
She stopped herself shuddering. Roman bowed his head.
"I wish I could say it would be alright, but..." He said quietly.
Mara just nodded, indicating she understood. She squeezed Misha's hand tighter as he looked up at her, worried. But they said nothing more and continued their search.
As they walked Misha bit his lip, clearly worried about something.
"Misha, what's wrong honey?" Mara asked anxiously.
Misha looked up at her, eyes wide. "I just, I feel so bad for Grozdan, how is he going to...manage now, with only one hand?"
Mara sighed. "I'll be honest sweetheart, I don't know. But he won't be alone, he'll have all of us to help him, alright."
Misha nodded at that, then stopped, as did Mara. For they spotted Roman stop and signal to them.
"Look, I think we've found somewhere."
They approached and saw a reasonably sized two story wooden cabin, the kind that could be used for vacations out in the woods.
"There's bound to be something in there." Roman remarked. "We'll take a look."
So they approached and worked their way inside, the door being unlocked. Still they moved slowly, Roman having an arrow notched in his bow, at the ready, just in case. But luckily there wasn't a Walker or living threat in sight. Still nervous however they paused after entering and looked around carefully.
"Alright." Roman said at last. "I'll go upstairs, you and Misha check down here and stay together, alright."
They both nodded and went their separate ways, looking for anything they could salvage that would be useful to them.
While searching the house carefully Mara was relieved to see Roman had been right, sadly there was no gas or warm clothing. But there was food, mostly canned goods that would last some time. She also found a first aid kit. It only had basic medical supplies, but it was better than nothing.
"Mara, look." Misha said.
She noted he had opened one of the lower cabinets in the room, but wasn't touching the contents. She soon saw why, inside was a gun and plenty of ammo.
"Good find Misha, hold on, I'll take this." She said.
Misha nodded and turned to look around, to see if they missed anything. Then he gasped.
"Mara." He whispered, shrinking back.
She was instantly on her feet and spun around, sure enough she saw what he saw and she tensed, for there, in the doorway, starting to approach them, was a trio of Walkers.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
