Episode 2 Part 2
Seeing the Walkers Mara instantly reached for her knife.
"Misha, get behind me." She hissed.
He moved at once while Mara readied herself, thankful that only one of them was currently shambling towards her. The gun might have been quicker and would certainly catch Roman's attention. But she knew ammo was scarce and besides, she might draw even more of them if she used it.
As soon as the first Walker was in range she acted quickly and was able to thrust her knife into it's head, killing it. She pushed it off and turned to the other two who had begun their slow but dauntless advance. Grimacing Mara readied herself and, when the second one reached her she again thrust the knife into it's head, killing it. But that was when the problem began.
"No." She hissed.
For the knife had become stuck in the dead monster's head, leaving her in trouble as the third bore down on her.
"No, no." She cried as she tried frantically to pull the weapon free.
"Mara!"
She yelped as she fell back, the third Walker on top of her, trying to bit her as she frantically tried to hold it off. She couldn't believe it was happening, panic surged through her as she desperately worked to keep herself from getting bitten.
'Misha, oh God, Misha I'm so sorry.' Her mind raced frantically.
Then suddenly, startling her, she heard a short cry and the Walker stopped struggling, in fact it went limp and when she moved she found it was dead, now crumpled on the floor.
Her eyes went wide when she finally saw the source of the Walker's demise, it was Misha. He stood there, panting, eyes wide, holding her bloodied knife.
"Misha..."
He dropped the knife, blinking and turning to her. "M-Mara, I...I..."
She immediately pulled herself over to him and hugged him tightly.
"I killed it." He whispered, shaking.
Mara knew how startling it must be for Misha, his first Walker kill. She herself still felt shocked by the development.
"Yes..." She said at last. "You did."
It was then they heard footsteps and tensed, but it turned out to be Roman.
"I heard the noise, what…?" He burst out, eyes going wide as he saw the Walkers.
"They're dead Roman, I got the first two." Mara explained. "The last on grabbed and, I thought it was over until Misha killed it."
Misha tuned to Roman. "Roman, I...I killed a Walker."
Roman smiled softly, stepping up to Misha and gently squeezing his shoulder. "Yeah, you did, kiddo. I know it probably feels strange right now...it's not meant to be easy. The important thing to remember is, unlike people, Walkers are already dead...we're not exactly, killing them, more...putting them out of their misery."
Misha nodded as Mara retrieved her knife and gave Roman a soft smile, pleased at the efforts he was putting in for Misha. Trying to help him understand and come to terms with what he had just done.
After regrouping they quickly gathered up the supplies they had found, including the ammo stash Misha had spotted, and began making their way back to the monument. Upon arriving they found the others all present and everything was just as they left it. The other kids were having fun playing together and Misha looked up at Mara, biting his lip.
"It'll be okay Misha, you'll be alright." She told him. "Go and join them, just remember, stay where you can be seen."
He nodded and hurried off, meanwhile Roman went to deliver their supplies to where the others had set up theirs. Hopefully they'd found enough things to last them for quite a while, especially as their group had grown again. After observing the others to make sure everything seemed alright, Mara made her way over to where Katia was standing.
"Katia, how is, how is everything here?" She asked.
Katia turned to her and managed a tight smile. "Better, we've not had any trouble from Walkers or any...human threats. Everybody else has returned so I think we've got a good collection of supplies. But as for how we're doing...mentally..."
Mara bowed her head. "I know what you mean. I could've died out there. Walkers attacked, my knife got stuck, I...Misha saved me."
"He did, he got your knife free?" Katia queried.
Mara shook her head. "More than that, he killed it...Misha's killed a Walker now Katia."
Katia grimaced, knowing what was troubling Mara, the loss of Misha's innocence through such an act.
She gently tried to reassure her friend.
"Mara, I know it's horrible, but he did it to save you." She told her. "That should speak of a lot, it shows how much he cares about you."
"I...yeah, I guess." Mara replied sadly.
She appreciated what Katia was trying to do for her. But she was broken from her worries by Grozdan's voice.
"K-Katia."
They both turned and Katia hurried to him, worried for he was holding up his left arm, breathing heavily.
"Grozdan, what's wrong are you-?"
He swallowed and explained. "There's a, a tingling...where my fingers should be, feels like, like they're twitching, but..."
Katia quickly pulled him into a hug, doing her best to comfort and reassure him.
Mara quickly realized the problem and sorrow filled her. 'Phantom pains, poor boy.'
It was clear Grozdan still had a long way to go.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
